MK (wisny) | 2579 comments A group I just stumbled onto has lots and lots of challenges going on. One of them is a scavenger hunt - who doesn't love a scavenger hunt!? :-). They had a list of 20 or so things to 'find' in books you read. You list the book title next to the 'scavenge hunted' item, to 'collect' that item. Sounds like a fun idea, anyone interested in trying one here?

If so, I propose to run it for the year (2014). I don't have a list of 'items', so I thought it might be fun for each person who joined the hunt to propose two list items to 'collect'. They can be characters, like a vampire, a teenager, a fisherman; an experience, like a flight, or a dive, or a carousel ride; a thing, like a goblet, a ring, a pair of travelling pants ;-). Whatever, basically.

With each new entrant, we can just edit our lists of items to scavenge, to add on. What do you think?

If there is any interest, I propose the first two items:

The great 2014 Scavenger Hunt! - BOARD ONE - Connie's first!
Completed Board One:
· Connie's - done
· MK's - done
· Apoorv's - done

- please join us on BOARD TWO, as well! The hunt goes for the entire calendar year :)

** hunters are free to continue gathering (I am!, but please follow us to BOARD TWO, and add new items to collect)

1. (MK) - a motorcycle ride
2. (MK) - mountain hike
3. (KH) - eggs
4. (KH) - something purple
5. (Annina) - Ice skating
6. (Annina) - champagne

Shawn | 201 comments This sounds like fun!

My suggestions would be:

Also, just a quick question about the scavenger hunt. The idea is to find these items in any of the books we read during 2014, (however large or small the part)?

Thanks

So are we stopping the list at a certain number of items? Or does the list continue to grow?

message 14: by MK (new)

MK (wisny) | 2579 comments Kathy wrote: "So are we stopping the list at a certain number of items? Or does the list continue to grow?"

Continue to grow :). The contest I modeled it after was a one-month contest that had a list of 20 items, so I'm thinking a year-long one could be much longer, without causing unworkability issues. Probably. :-p

Since it's likely that you'd 'collect' more than one item in a title, a long list wouldn't require an equally large number of books to complete the hunt.

- a "self-written" poem (no reciting Shakespeare's verses or like)

Connie Cote I just finished reading Around the World in 80 Days. Too bad it wasn't a January read as I spotted at least 3 things from the scavenger hunt! Hopefully the upcoming reads will be as good.

I'm a little unsure of what you mean by a self-written poem. Are you thinking of a poem written by a character in the book you are reading?

Done! lol, I didn't even notice the first time thru, to be honest. I read "typonese" like it's not even an error :D

I'm not certain (I'm sure Tytti will say), but I thought she meant a poem original to the book, rather than an excerpt within the book, from another work ...

Tytti | 1010 comments MK wrote: "I'm not certain (I'm sure Tytti will say), but I thought she meant a poem original to the book, rather than an excerpt within the book, from another work ... "

Yep, that's what I meant. An original poem might be a better way to put it, or not. (I just read Possession and there were many of those in it.) I thought it shouldn't be too easy, I think I've seem many "real" poems in novels, especially in classics.

And I usually spot typos quite easily because they make me stop and read again (at least if it's another word I recognize). Maybe it's connected to the way I learned English, who knows.

I have trouble with poems. Hm, maybe I'll still try it

Tytti | 1010 comments MK wrote: "I have trouble with poems. Hm, maybe I'll still try it "

There is a lot more than poems in it. Like diaries, letters, fairytales, stories... dozens of pages... in smaller print or in italics... It is a well written book but certainly not for everybody. Most people in our book club couldn't finish it.

Connie Cote What are the rules for this challenge as far as using the same book to find more than one item? Is it one item per book?

MK (wisny) | 2579 comments Connie wrote: "What are the rules for this challenge as far as using the same book to find more than one item? Is it one item per book?"

Just collect them as/where you find them :-). Probably you can collect multiple items in the same title.

UPDATE! I finished BOARD ONE ^_^ wooohoooo - MK done, May 6, 2014

I need a list for me to edit, as I collect my items, here's mine (that will leave the op post uncrossed-out, for a reference list :-). I put most of my updating comments inside spoiler tags, in an effort to make the thread less cluttered, thus easier for others to find their own lists. I can delete them too, if that's easier (just let me know, if that's preferred).

Okay, I found some stuff - now to edit to update :-).

Daisy (bellisperennis) One of the books I'm reading has mentioned a ball game. Another book has mentioned baseball along with some of the baseball greats. Neither has mentioned "a baseball." Ugh. lol. It will come up eventually . . .

MK (wisny) | 2579 comments I had sparkling wine, in a champagne glass, make an appearance in one of my books. I counted it for champagne ... but I wasn't sure if that was technically a 'clean find' or not :-o .... I did tally it up, but I hope I find 'champagne' rather than 'sparkling wine' later in the year ;-).

I think that might be the most difficult thing to find. I don't read that much American literature, probably won't at all this year. Of course there is also the Finnish baseball but I think it's rarely mentioned in the type of books I read.

This is an interesting read:

https://www.creativenonfiction.org/ex...

It is an essay in Anatomy of Baseball. Unfortunately, the library doesn't have this book.

I have this feeling you may be right.

Thanks Shawn! - kidding

It might be a good idea to read a book specific to baseball: history of . . . ? women in . . . ? I found Ball Four which looks like it might be a good read.

I am not that interested so my only hope is that in some novel the Civil Guard is practicing it. Originally it was, in part, designed to teach skills needed at the front like diving (for cover) and throwing (grenades).

What language do you do most of your reading in, Tytti (also, how many languages can you speak/read, if it's not rude for me to ask, I hope)? It's easy for me to forget that English is not your first language, since your posts are grammatically flawless :-).

Tytti | 1010 comments Thanks. :-) I read mostly in Finnish (for pleasure), in English if necessary and at the university it often is. I know many people read also for pleasure in English but I haven't felt the need really. Some people, even teenagers, used to read Harry Potters in English before they were translated. I do have the Sherlock Holmes short stories in English because I couldn't find them all in Finnish. The trouble with them is the old vocabulary, of course. Though it was years ago when I tried to read them the last time, my English is probably better now. Maybe this year I finish them.

My second strongest language is Swedish and I probably could manage to read something in that, too, but because it was mandatory and blackmailed into the curriculum (a long story) I don't particularly want to use it. (Swedish is the only mandatory language to every pupil in school, not even Finnish is to everyone and English is not at all. The Swedish speaking minority is about 5% and getting smaller so I won't need it, either.) I've also studied German, French and Russian but I don't know them that well. I'd love to understand French better... and some Latin, too.

Hmmm. Baseball and grenades! Never would have thought.

Well, "pesäpallo" at least. It's a much faster sport, a lot more throwing and stuff...
