(See: http://writersalmanac.publicradio.org/ )
there is an interesting piece about author, Michael Shaara.

Excerpts from the above webpage:
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
"... Shaara spent years researching and writing a book about the Civil War. ... it was rejected by 15 publishers... and finally ... _The Killer Angels_ was published in 1974. It got mixed reviews and sold poorly, and nobody paid much attention to it. So it was a shock to Michael Shaara and everyone else when _The Killer Angels_ was awarded the 1975 Pulitzer Prize for fiction. ... But it still wasn't a commercial success. ... in 1993, "Gettysburg", a film based on The Killer Angels, finally made the novel a best seller."
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Too bad that Michael Sharra didn't live to see his book finally become a best seller after the 1993 movie. He died in 1988.
