“Gabby!!” someone called from the hall. A girl got out of her bed and opened the door. “Gabby! You are going to be late for school!” said Gabby’s mother. Gabby nodded and closed the door to her room. As soon as she opened her closet door, her phone rang from across the room. Gabby groaned and walked to her nightstand; she picked up her phone and clicked ‘answer’.
“Hello?” Gabby said in a sleepy voice.
“Hey!!” the other voice on the end screamed. Gabby pushed the phone away from her ear and said, “Hey Jenna,”
“I’m almost at your house, are you ready yet?” she asked.
Gabby looked down at her pajamas, “not exactly.”
“Well hurry! I will be there in about five minutes.” And with that, she hung up. Gabby put her phone on her bed as she ran across the room searching for a top and jeans. She went into her bathroom and changed from her pajamas to her clothes.
She quickly put on her lip gloss and brushed her hair. She grabbed her headband and pulled it over her head with her brown wavy curls dangling down her shoulder. She wasn’t the type to go all out for school; she didn’t put on eye shadow, eye liner, blush or all that essentials.
Gabby heard the door from the first floor open and feet walking toward her door. She put on her perfume and opened the door before Jenna got the chance to knock. “Ready?” Jenna asked.
Gabby nodded and closed the door as they walked down the stairs. “Bye mom!” Gabby waved as she left the house towards Jenna’s Jeep Commander. Once in the car, Jenna started talking nonstop.
“Do you think there will be any cute guys in high school?”
‘I’m no-“
“What about the teacher’s? Our first year in high school, do you think our teachers will be mean?”
“Probab-“
“Oh! And what about some of the kids from middle school?”
“They are pro-“
“I wonder what our lunch schedule is going to be.”
“Jenna!” Now this caught her attention, she stopped talking and listened to what Gabby had to say.
“I love you to death, but please stop talking for a minute.” Gabby said.
Jenna nodded and Gabby leaned back against her seat. The clock on the radio said 8:50, she looked out the window and when she looked back at the clock it just hit 8:51. Dear lord.
“One minute is up! Ok, so it has been about 2 years since your last boyfriend. Please tell me you are going to get a boyfriend this year.” She said raising an eyebrow.
“Maybe, but I’m not promising anything.” Gabby said.
“I’ll take it.” Jenna shrugged. Someone’s phone rang and based on the ring tone, Gabby automatically knew it was Jenna’s. Jenna looked at the caller ID and said. “It’s Rebecca,”
Rebecca was one of their good friend’s; Rebecca was the one with all the info of what’s going on in school.
Jenna’s phone was connected to the car, she clicked ‘answer’ and Rebecca’s voice filled the car. “Hey, guess what I just found out?” she said.
“What did you find out this time?” Gabby and Jenna said in unison.
“You guys remember Zach’s cousin, right?” Rebecca asked.
“Yes! Who could forget a babe like that!?” Jenna said as she started smiling as if remembering when we went over to Zach’s house and his cousin was outside playing basketball with no shirt on.
“Well, his name is John and he is totally hot! He is coming to our high school.” Rebecca said.
Jenna giggled as Gabby just rolled her eyes and watched the trees move by as the car drove.
“I am so going to talk to him!” Jenna said.
Rebecca made a noise on the other side, “Really Jenna? Do you always have to get all the guys? Can you leave this one for me for once?” Rebecca sounded annoyed.
“Jeez. Ok, I will look for someone else to date.” Jenna said. Gabby laughed a little.
‘Ok, sorry I got snappy.” Rebecca said. “Now I have no competition.” They heard her exhale as if she was relaxed.
Gabby was offended, “You’re not worried about me taking him?” Not that she ever will.
“Gabby, no offense, but we all know John is way out of your league and you never go for any guys.”
Jenna looked pissed off at Rebecca’s answer. “Gabby could date him if she wanted to. And you know what, if I want to date him, I will. You are not going to stop me from dating him and you won’t stop Gabby either.” Jenna hung up and sighed.
“Thanks for sticking up for me.” Gabby said.
“Of course, no one tells my best friend who she can and can’t date. And what gives her the right to say he is out of your league! I am mad at her so I won’t be talking to her for awhile.”
Gabby laughed and nodded. “Yeah, but it wasn’t that big a deal, that is something to forgive. Unless she did something like make fun of your mom then that is something you can’t forgive. But come on, this is just drama and we don’t need any drama for our first year in high school.” Gabby said.
“You’re right. As usual, but if she causes you or me any problems then she is gone. I will never speak to her again.” She said in a serious tone. When Jenna commits herself to something, she doesn’t quit on it. So if she says she is never going to talk to Rebecca again, she means it.
“If you end up liking John, I won’t be flirting with him, just watch out for Rebecca.” She said as she entered the student parking lot.
“Don’t worry. I don’t think I want to like him anyway.” She said as they both got out of the car and entered the building of their new high school.

As Gabby and Jenna walked through the halls of school, they were greeted by hugs by their friends. They went to their lockers and were surprised to see their lockers were right next to each other.
“I think we got lucky.” Gabby said.
Jenna nodded, “This is going to be a great year, I can just tell!” She squealed. Gabby just laughed. The first bell rang and they parted ways.
Gabby looked at the door numbers to find her homeroom. She looked down at her paper when she bumped into a wall, no, not a wall, a boy. Once she stood up from where she fell, she recognized him immediately when she saw his face.
“Sorry,” she said as she gathered her books.
“It’s fine.” He said, once he saw her face she knew he recognized her too. “You’re that girl who my cousin brought over, right?”
Oh great, I’m known as ‘that girl’, why do I even care, I don’t like him. She thought. “Yeah,” she said.
“You’re,” he seemed like he was trying to remember her name, “Jenna. Right?” he asked.
“Actually, that was my friend. I’m Gabby.” She said.
“Right,” He nodded. She nodded back and said bye. She walked to the classroom where a few students were sitting. She sat down in one of the middle seats as she looked around to everyone who was sitting around her. She took a glance at the door and felt her mouth drop open. There stood John talking with one of his friends. She quickly shut her mouth and pulled out her phone to look busy.
She looked from the corner of her eye to see a little figure walking by her to the back of the room. She used her phone as a reflection to see the back. She saw John laughing with his friends in the back of the room; she looked back at her phone as she rolled her eyes.
A girl walked up to Gabby, who she did not recognize. “Hi, I’m Valerie.” She said smiling.
Gabby smiled at Valerie, “I’m Gabby.” She replied.
“I’m kind of new here so I don’t know many people.” She said.
Gabby did not know what to tell the girl, so she simply nodded and smiled. The girl sat on the desk next to her and put her bag down. “So, are you new here too?” she asked hopeful.
“Not really. I mean I am new to this school but I know a lot of people at this school.” She said.
“Oh.” She said kind of disappointed. “Anyways, did you see that cute guy?” she asked.
“Which one are you talking about?” Gabby asked.
Valerie pointed to John sitting on top of his desk as he laughed with his friends.
Gabby rolled her eyes, “Yeah,” she said.
“Isn’t he cute?” she asked looking at Gabby.
Gabby didn’t want to lie to her new friend, “yeah, I guess he’s cute.” She shrugged.
“You don’t like him?” she asked in disbelief.
“Not really, he doesn’t seem like my type.” Gabby said.
“What-ever,” she said as though she thought Gabby wasn’t saying the truth. “If he asked me out, I would say yes in the blink of an eye.” She said.
Gabby laughed, “I don’t want to go out with him. He just seems like that type of guy who every girl is going to end up liking, one of those types who dates a new girl every week.” She said.
“He does, but I won’t mind taking that ride.” She said smiling as she looked over at him. Her eyes went wide as she looked back at Gabby. “Don’t look now but he is walking this way.” She said biting her lip. Valerie obviously looked nervous, as if she was meeting her favorite actor for the first time.
John walked up to us and looked at Valerie, “Hey,” he said smiling. If Valerie weren’t keeping her cool, she’d probably faint. Gabby rolled her eyes as she put her phone in her pocket. “So, my friend over there thinks you’re cute, he asked me to ask you if he wanted to go out with you.” Only Gabby could tell Valerie was disappointed. Gabby turned around as she saw all the boys in the back starring at them.
“Which one did you say wanted to ask me out?” she asked looking at all the guys starring at her.
“The one in the blue,” he said pointing at the guy who tried to look at something else so he wouldn’t meet Valerie’s eyes. “Um… ok,” she said.
“Cool,” he said. He turned around and stopped a little as he saw Gabby, but he regained himself and walked back to the guys. They talked for awhile and they all smiled and patted the guy in blue on the back.
“Well that was disappointing.” Valerie said with a sigh as she dropped her chin to her hand.
“I can tell. Why did you say yes?” Gabby asked.
Valerie shrugged as she looked back at the boy, “He’s cute.”
Gabby smiled, “Your first day at school and you already got a date.”
“Do you have a boyfriend?” she asked Gabby.
“Er- no. I don’t really want one at the moment. I am not interested in the guys at this school. None of them seem to match what I think of the perfect boyfriend.” She said.
“Well, I don’t think there is such a thing of the ‘Perfect Boyfriend’” she said shrugging. She soon looked worried, “I’m a little nervous, I don’t think I want to go on my first date alone.”
“This is going to be your first date?” Gabby asked in disbelief given the fact that Valerie was very pretty.
“Yeah, don’t make fun. Anyways, can you come with me? Like on a double date?” she asked.
“I would, but I don’t have a date, and as I said, I don’t want to go out with any of these guys.” She said.
“You don’t have to go out with them for a ‘real’ date, just so I won’t get nervous being there with someone I barely know.”
“But you barely know me.” She said pointing at herself.
“Yeah, but you are by far the first friend I made at this school.” Valerie said. “Please,” she begged.
“Alright, but I don’t even have a date.” Gabby said trying to point out the obvious.
“Let me handle that,” she said getting up from her seat. “Come on,” she motioned her to stand up and follow her.
Gabby groaned but reluctantly stood up and followed Valerie to the back of the room. As soon as they made it to the back, the boy who asked out Valerie automatically punched his friend next to him.
“Hi,” Valerie said to the boy. “Um… Would it be okay if my friend Gabby came with us on our, er- date?” she asked biting her lip a bit.
“Sure,” the guy shrugged.
“But the thing is, she does not have a date,” this time she said to them all.
“I’ll go with you.” John said shrugging.
Gabby rolled her eyes in a way where no one would see. “Okay then, we’ll see you guys tonight.” Valerie smiled as she and Gabby walked back to their desks.
“Do I really have to go out with John?” she asked.
“Yes, yes you do. Please! You would be doing me a huge favor.” She said.
“Ugh, fine.” She said putting her chin in her hand.
“They better be picking us up. You can come over my house once you’re ready.” Valerie suggested. Gabby nodded as the class came quiet when the teacher came into the classroom.

Lunch came by real quick. Gabby invited Valerie to eat lunch with her and Jenna. Who knows, maybe they all might end up being a trio. Before they met up with Jenna, Gabby told Valerie, “Don’t mention anything about the double date.”
“Why not?” Valerie asked.
“Because, then Jenna would get all suspicious and try to come. Right now, that is the least of my problems, but if I am going on a fake ‘date’ with John, then I don’t want Jenna coming.”
Valerie just shrugged and they continued walking until they met up with Jenna at their new lunch table. “So, did anything happen? Met a cute guy? Who’s she?” she asked as she just saw Valerie.
“Nothing really happened, just boring class. Didn’t meet any cute guys. And this is Valerie.” She said, answering all of Jenna’s questions. “Valerie, Jenna. Jenna, Valerie. Now, you two met let’s get some lunch, I’m starving!” and with that, they all went to get their lunch when the bell rang for the next class.
Gabby begged time would go by slower so the ‘date’ would be a longer time. The last hour came by quick as Gabby settled into a seat. John walked in through the door and walked up to Gabby when he saw her. Oh great! Gabby thought.
“Hey, I never told you guys what we were going to do, did I?” he asked.
“Oh right, so where are we going?” gabby said as she was putting away some papers the teacher had handed them.
“We were thinking of going roller skating, or would you guys rather go to a pizza place?” he asked.
“Roller skating sounds fine.” She tried keeping her comments short so he would just walk away. To her luck, he sat on the desk in front of her. “Cool, so we’ll pick you guys up at seven.” He said.
Great, he is the first person I see in the morning, and now he is the last I see at the end of the day. That’s just… peachy.
The teacher had everyone get up and move the desks where the formed in two groups each. “Lord help me,” Gabby muttered to herself. The teacher had all the students go to the back of the class as he assigned the two students per table. “Troy and Jailene. Zane and Oscar. Gabby and John…” he continued calling names but Gabby was muttering things to herself as she sat down next to John. After the teacher had put everyone in their groups, he announced, “This will be your partner for the rest of the year. Talk amongst yourselves as I finish some papers.” He walked back to his desk and picked up piles of papers.
Why, what did I ever do to you? She thought as she looked at the teacher. She looked at John who seemed to be watching her.
“So, about our da-“
“It’s not a date.” She interrupted. “I am just going with you for my friend.” She said.
He held up his hands as if to say I surrender. “Ok, so about our non date. Where we will be picking you guys up at?”
Gabby wrote down Valerie’s address on a piece of paper and handed it to him. He read the paper and shoved it into his pocket. I won’t be surprised if he ends up losing it. Gabby thought.
She sighed and plopped her chin on her hand. They didn’t talk to each other until the bell ended for them to leave school.
“See you at seven.” He said as he walked out of the classroom. Gabby walked out of school when Valerie and Jenna met up with her. “I just had class with Valerie, she’s really cool.” Jenna whispered to Gabby. Gabby smiled and nodded, “So I’ll be at your at house at seven.” Gabby said to Valerie. Valerie nodded and waved by as she walked in a different direction than Jenna and Gabby.
Gabby made it to Jenna’s car as she slid in the passenger’s seat. She looked out the window to see a couple of girls flirting with John and his friends, all but the blue-shirted guy. At least he’s not flirting with all the girls. Jenna drove out of the school and dropped Gabby off at her house. Gabby sighed and looked at the clock once inside the house. 5:20 it read. “Two more hours and I have to see him again.” How she disgusted him. A lot of girls thought she was crazy when she said she didn’t see what was so great about John. Gabby went into her room and read her favorite book, ‘Kissed by an Angel’, for the time to go by. At 6:00 she put down her book and got dressed. All she wore was a jacket and jeans. She put her headband back over her head as she placed her brown wavy curls in front of her, she left the house leaving a note on the kitchen counter telling her mom where she was.
Gabby drove to Valerie’s house. She walked up to the door to be greeted by Valerie wearing a pink shirt with a skirt. “Too much?” she asked looking down at her skirt that only hit mid-thigh.
“Uh, yeah. Given the fact we are going roller skating.” She said as she put her hands in her jacket’s pockets.
“We’re going roller skating?! If I would’ve known that I would’ve put on jeans like you are. One second.” She ran upstairs and shut her bedroom door.
Gabby sat on the sofa as she looked at the clock, 6:55. Valerie came back down a minute later wearing the same pink shirt with skinny blue jeans. “Better?” she asked.
“Better.” Gabby said as the doorbell rang from the front door. Valerie squealed and Gabby just rolled her eyes.
“I can’t wait for this day to be over.” She sighed as she walked with Valerie to the front door, revealing John and the blue-shirt guy who were both wearing the same thing they had on today.
“Let’s go!” Valerie said as she shut the door and was walked by the blue-shirt guy to the car. To her luck, Valerie sat in the passenger seat, leaving John to sit in the back with Gabby.
Could this night get any better? Gabby thought. They soon made it to the roller skating rink where Valerie and the blue-shirt guy were doing the most of the talking through the car ride. Turns out, the blue-shirt guy’s name was Garret.
They all walked in and bought their tickets. As soon as Valerie and Garret got their skates, they left Gabby and John as the rolled to the rink. Gabby was tying her skates as she looked up and saw John watching her, no, waiting for her. “You could go. You don’t have to wait for me.” She said as she tied her other skate.
He shrugged, “It’s fine.”
Gabby looked back down at her skate and rolled her eyes. She rolled to the lockers where she put her sneakers in. She wheeled around and saw John skating his way toward her. “Ready?” he asked holding out his hand. Gabby looked down at his hand and skated forward into the rink. John easily skated in next to her as they skated around the rink with her hands stuffed inside her jacket. She looked around and saw Valerie and Garret holding hands while skating. Valerie met Gabby’s gaze as she mouthed “hold his hand and skate”
Gabby mouthed back “no.” Valerie shrugged and continued to skate. John broke the silence when she wished he hadn’t. “So, have you ever skated before?” he asked.
“Not in awhile. I think it has been 5 years since the last time I skated.” She said.
He nodded and continued talking. “You are really great though. I think you are by far the best partner I’ve had.
Gabby couldn’t help but smirk.
“What?” he asked.
“How many times have you used that one?” she said.
“What do you mean by that?” he asked raising an eyebrow.
“I mean,” she skated in front of him, skating backwards. “How many girls have you used that line on? 8…30?” she asked.
He laughed, “Is that what you think of me? The guy with all the girlfriends?”
“Pretty much, yeah.” She nodded.
“Ouch.” He said putting a hand on his heart. “That hurt. But I’m not like that.” He said.
Gabby rolled her eyes, she was about to skate forward when her foot hit the back of her leg causing her to fall on her butt.
John knelt down and helped her back up. “You ok?” he asked.
“My butt’s sore.” She said. She smacked her head with her other hand realizing she just said that out loud. Her other hand was still held by John.
He laughed, “Okay then, let’s get you over to the tables so you could sit.” She tried letting go of his hand but he kept a hold on it. They skated back to the tables hand in hand, which Gabby wished he would let go of, and she sat down on one side of the table. He finally let go of her hand as he sat on the other side of the table.
“You should go back to skating, I’ll go back out there soon.” She said gesturing him to skate back to the rink. He just shook his head, “I’m not going to let you sit here alone where other guys could be checking you out.”
She rolled her eyes, “And if they do, so what? Anybody can look at whoever they want.” She said.
“Yeah, but if I sit here they won’t try to hit on you.”
She had nothing to say so she just got up from her seat and skated back to the rink. John skated in next to her, “Why did you leave?” he asked.
“Because I have nothing to say to you.” She said.
He was quiet for a few minutes before he asked, “Why don’t you like me?”
She stopped skating and moved for other skaters to pass. “Why do I have to?” she asked.
“I just find it weird that you don’t like me, because-“
“Because all of the girls are in love with you.” She finished for him. “I am not one of those girls who fall for a guy like you.”
“What do you mean ‘a guy like you’?” he asked.
“You know exactly what I mean.” She skated, once again, away from him. And this time he let her skate away without following her. I knew this would a horrible night. She thought. Gabby took out some dollar bills and turned them into quarters to play a game she has never one before.
She walked over to the claw machine and put in her quarter. She moved the claw around in circles searching for something she wanted. She noticed a fuzzy teddy bear and put the claw over its head. The claw slipped out of the head and went its way to the box to let out nothing. Gabby groaned and put in another quarter with another fail.
She was about to put another quarter in when John’s voice startled her. “You’re not doing it right.” He said.
“Obviously, if I was I would’ve won that bear.” She said pointing at the fuzzy teddy bear starring back at her.
“Here,” he picked up a quarter from the cup she placed on the machine with her quarters. He put one a quarter in and the machine made it’s ‘coin in’ music. He was behind her as he steadied her hand on the jostle. She moved her hand in the direction he moved his, with his other hand he tapped the DROP button.
The claw went around the fuzzy teddy bear carrying it to the drop box. He let go of her hand and handed her the fuzzy teddy bear, “Here you go,” he smiled.
She smiled back and grabbed the fuzzy teddy bear. They skated back to the rink, holding the bear to her chest.
For the first time that night, she was actually happy she came.

The night went by faster than Gabby had thought. “So, are you going to be sleeping over?” Valerie asked Gabby as they sat on Valerie’s sofa.
“If you want me to,” Gabby shrugged. She was sitting down watching the TV holding the teddy bear to her chest.
“Of course!” Valerie squealed, “I have always wanted to have a sleepover!” She smiled at Gabby and raised an eyebrow when she saw the teddy bear. “Okay, this has been bugging me. Where did you get that adorable bear?”
Gabby looked down at her teddy bear and shrugged, “John won it for me.”
“Aw! That is so sweet.” Valerie smiled.
Gabby rolled her eyes, “so do you have any clothes I can borrow for the night?” she asked.
Valerie jumped, “Oh right, of course!” She ran upstairs to her room and came back down a few minutes later with a blue tank top and shorts. “Hopefully these will fit, I mean we look like we are the same size.” She said handing the clothes to Gabby.
Gabby smiled, “thanks,” she walked up the stairs and felt stupid for forgetting to ask Valerie where the bathroom was. A few seconds later, Gabby found the bathroom and changed. When she came back down Valerie was at the kitchen, Gabby heard popping and assumed she was making popcorn.
Gabby jumped onto the sofa and watched ‘Too Cute’ on Animal Planet. Valerie came back with two bowls of popcorn and handed one to Gabby. “Thanks,” she said taking a piece of popcorn and popping it into her mouth.
A few hours later Gabby and Valerie fell asleep. Gabby woke up at 8:45 am. “Crap!” She said as she stumbled out of the couch they had fallen asleep on. Valerie instantly shot up, eye alert. “What happened?” she asked.
“We’re going to be late for school and I haven’t even gotten dressed!” She said. Valerie rolled her eyes and ran upstairs, she came back down with a blue blouse and white skirt, and a pair of flats that were white with blue flowers. “Here you go,” she said handing them to Gabby. Gabby smiled and ran up to the bathroom to change. When she was done, she looked at herself in the mirror and felt her mouth drop. “Why don’t I have clothes like this..” she muttered to herself.
She brushed her hair and Valerie gave Gabby a spare toothbrush she always kept in case of anything. They soon left the house and headed to school. She got a text from Jenna saying, where r u? I am at the locker waiting 4 u! r u coming to skool 2day?
Gabby texted Jenna back, I am walking to there now with Valerie.
Valerie waved bye to Gabby as she walked to her locker, “I’ll see you in first hour.” She called. Gabby met up with Jenna for a few minutes then went into her class. Valerie smiled at Gabby and motioned to the back of the class where Garret was sitting, “I’m going to go talk to him for awhile.” And with that, she left to go say hi to him. From the corner of Gabby’s eye, she saw John stand by her desk.
She looked up to see John looking at her, “Hey,” he said.
“Hi.” She said.
“You look really nice,” he said looking at her outfit.
“Thanks.” She said looking down at her outfit Valerie had picked for her. She looked back up at him and said, “Well, I will see you in seventh hour.”
“Third, too.” He added.
Gabby was taken aback, he’s in my third hour? She thought confused. “You’re in my third hour?” she asked.
“Yeah. P.E. The boys and girls don’t work together but I saw you playing basketball when the guys were in the weight room.” He said.
“Oh.” She said, “Well, I guess I will see you later then,” she said. He nodded and with that, he was gone to the back of the class.

“Move it! You guys are slower than snails!” The coach yelled to the boys and girls running the field. Gabby picked up her pace and passed two girls in front of her. “Hey,” some voice said next to her as she ran. She looked over and saw John keeping her pace.
“Hi,” she said back running a little faster ahead of him. He reached up to her easily.
“What’s up?” He asked.
“Running.” She said running faster. “Will you slow down?” he asked reaching up to her once again.
“I’m trying to finish this mile, so I can pass. So if you’ll excuse me...” she ran faster to where the coach stood. Once gabby reached up to the coach, she was completely out of breath. She put both her hands over her head and eased her breathing.
The coach looked at her watch, “Not bad Gabby. I hope you can do better next time, though.” She raised an eyebrow at Gabby. Gabby nodded, “Yes ma’am.” She turned and took her time walking to the water fountain. She drank the water and looked up to see John leaning against the wall looking at her, smiling.
She stood up and brushed her lips with her hand to take off the extra water. “Can I help you?” she asked.
“I can’t just stand?” he asked back.
Gabby shrugged, “Okay, have fun standing.” And walked into the girls’ locker room where she knew John wouldn’t follow. She looked over her shoulder to make sure he wasn’t behind her. She showered and changed back into the clothes Valerie let her borrow.
Gabby went to her favorite spot in the school; there was this relaxing spot by the football court where there was a grass field and two trees. She went to her favorite tree the one she carved with Jenna when Jenna’s brother took them to the school when he was in football practice. They drew their initials with the words BFF under it. She sat under the tree and pulled out her book. She read a decent chapter when she was interrupted by a girl in front of her.
Gabby looked up at Rebecca, “Hi.” She said.
“Hey,” Rebecca said. “Mind if I sit with you?”
Gabby shrugged, “Sure.” As Rebecca sat down next Gabby, Gabby saw a figure walking toward them. It was too far for her to see him clearly so she just waited and went back to her novel.
Rebecca patted Gabby’s arm in a rapid motion. “What?” Gabby asked.
“Look,” she whispered. Gabby looked up to see John walking a few feet closer to them. “Be cool,” she whispered.
Why does everyone say ‘Be cool’ when someone they like walks by? Gabby thought. She rolled her eyes and watched John stand right before them. “Hey,” he said.
“Hi!” Rebecca perked, “I’m Rebecca, you probably don’t remember me when I was over Zach’s place.”
“No, I remember you.” He said.
Gabby looked over to see Rebecca smiling, satisfied with his answer. “Do you guys mind if I sit here?” he asked looking at Gabby’s direction but it was Rebecca who answered, “Sure!”
John sat over on the side next to Gabby, it wasn’t even a few seconds before Rebecca picked up her stuff and scurried herself next to John. Gabby shifted a little farther from them.
“So, John…” but Gabby muted them out and looked up at the clouds. It wasn’t until a few moments when she looked back at them and they were both starring at her as if waiting for an answer. Rebecca looked worried but John just had a questioning face. “I’m sorry, did you ask me something?” Gabby asked.
“Yeah, I was wondering if you were busy Friday night.” He said. Gabby opened her mouth to say no but Rebecca was the first to respond…again. “Yeah, she’s really busy. She was just going on about her plans. But I’m not busy Friday.” She said smiling. Gabby rolled her eyes and played with her necklace, actually waiting to see what John would say.
He looked back Gabby, “You’re busy Friday?” he asked once again. Gabby looked over at Rebecca who had pleading eyes.
She sighed, “Yeah, I have a lot of family things going on Friday.” She said.
John looked disappointed, “Okay, so how about Saturday?”
“Why do you want to go out with her? I just said I was free Friday, how about we go do something?” Rebecca suggested looking confused.
Gabby was confused on why she was hoping John would say no. “Um, I was asking her because…” he took a second before finishing, “my friend is going on another double date and the girl he is going with doesn’t want to go with anyone else but Gabby.” He said.
“I can go with you.” Rebecca said.
This was just sad, Rebecca was really being desperate. “Well, if Gabby decides not to go then I guess you could come…”
“Can me and Gabby come?” she asked looking hopeful.
“Yeah, I guess.” He shrugged.
“I can cancel my family plans,” Gabby said nodding.
Rebecca clapped her hands, “Yay!” She looked at John, “So where are we going?”
“Chiki’s Palace.”
