I just went through that list a little better and there are some titles on it that definitely don't fit. I personally wouldn't count anything by Stephen king as classic horror because it isn't old enough. There are even newer titles in there as well though like Joe hills horns. I understand that anyone can add to those lists on goodreads but obviously some people don't understand what classic means. I am going to use the list for ideas but I'm not going to limit my choices from the list, I will probably join a classic novels group.
Here's mine, I'll start with 6 for now...
1. The Picture of Dorian Gray, Oscar Wilde
2. Rebecca, Daphne du Maurier
3. Uncle Silas, Joseph Sheridan Le Fanu
4. The Vampyre, John Polidori
5.
We Have Always Lived in the Castle
by Shirley Jackson 2/11/2014 ★★★★★
6. Ghost Stories of an Antiquary, MR James

I found another list that sticks to much older 'classic' horror.

I will add it to the challenge and word it so it says you can use any classic horror you use and the lists are just for suggestion.

Anyone know any good sites to download free classics? I am looking for The Crucible it was released in 1952 so I would think the copyrights would be up but it is still pretty expensive on Amazon.

I like your list, Addy! I read House on the Borderland last year and The Willows this year. I really liked them both. I, too, have been wanting to read the original Carnacki book. Good luck with your challenge!

It doesn't look as if they have a free Crucible copy though. :(
The Gutenberg site's not bad. It doesn't have the crucible though but does have a nice catalogue of gothic horror.

I am only familiar with two of your picks, Jon. What made you go with those choices?
Thanks Charlene and Kate, maybe the copyrights where renewed. It isn't old enough for public domain and not on any free classic sites. There was also two movies based on it that could have sparked enough interest for renewing copyrights. Maybe i can find a cheap print copy I'm not paying $8 for the kindle edition.

Justin, the last link is a pdf version of it. Unless I've got a different version.

Well, I wanted to choose some classics I hadn't already read. I got most of these from the reading lists in Horror: The 100 Best Books and Horror: Another 100 Best Books.
And The Boats of Glen Carrig was Rick Hautala's choice for the top 100.

The Adventures Of Jules De Grandin
In Ghostly Company
We Have Always Lived in the Castle
The Haunting of Hill House
The House on the Borderland
Wagner the Werewolf
I'm calling quits on my classic challenge, I may still add to it but only if I it takes my fancy at the time.
