I know what you mean Stacey. I've read FOUR books for December's challenge. Not sure how well January's is going to go either. The trials of trying to pack up, shop for a new house (in another state, even) and have the holidays happen. :o(
But, I do the best I can. (I'm also almost 80 books fewer read this year than in the last 3 years.)

I am thinking about adding some "bonus" challenges to later in the year challenges. It will be one challenge per month, and not all months will have them. And what, you are asking, ARE these bonus challenges? A salute to the Fathers and Mothers of our genres. Since our genres are actually "marriages" of Romance, Horror, Gothic, Sci-fi, fantasy and dystopian, I am selecting authors from the past. So, no living authors at all.
The names I've come up with so far, :
Jules Verne
H. G. Wells
Georgette Heyer
Andre Norton
Barbara Cartland
Marion Zimmer Bradley
Hugo Gernsback
Bram Stoker
If anyone wants to suggest any additional names, please feel free--however, as I said--NO ONE STILL LIVING. And, preferably, at least 5 years since they passed away. Plus you must defend your nominee. WHY are they important enough to be considered a "founding Mother/Father"?
The month that they appear will be important to the particular Mother/Father in some way--they were born then, had first/best known book published first in that month, died, got married. . .
You will NOT be required to read one of their books. Instead I will be saying how they influenced our genre and giving you the option of reading a book that fits that reason, or of course, you could just read one of their books. :o)

I'm thinking that if you all like these "special" little challenges, we might keep them going after this year.
I know that there are many other authors that can/should be listed as "Founding Parents" but the ones that I listed were the ones that popped instantly to mind when I got to thinking about who had influenced the writers of today.
I should have added: Edgar Rice Burroughs, Robert A Heinlein Isaac Asimov, Arthur C. Clarke, Jane Austen, Charlotte Brontë, Emmuska Orczy, Fletcher Pratt, L. Sprague de Camp, Wilkie Collins and probably another one or two dozen authors. But, those were the first ones that popped into my head, and, except for Hugo Gernsback I was sure you'd have all heard of them. And even Hugo, you've heard of, even if you aren't aware of it. (I'll tell you more about him when his month rolls around. In the meantime--you have to suffer wondering what my evil mind has come up with. Mwhahahaha)
