Merja (merjafrob) | 488 comments My mother got this as an Christmas present. If she gets it finished before end of January, I'll be joining this group read :) Anyway it's in my to-read listing.

Kathryn | 581 comments I borrowed this as an e-book yesterday so looking forward to starting it sometime soon!

Megan (lahairoi) | 7470 comments I'm in for this challenge! Can't wait to read this book

message 4: by Lynn (new)

Lynn (lmelliott) | 686 comments I've just downloaded this from my library. Looking forward to the discussion on it.

message 5: by Sonia (new)

Sonia Hernandez I borrowed this book from the library and looking forward to reading his latest book; loved his other books.

message 6: by Terrie (new)

Terrie I just joined this group. This selection prompted me to move this book from 367 on my to-read shelf up to 3. I am looking forward to reading and discussing this book.

message 7: by Sarah (new)

Sarah (sarahlou29) If I can manage to find it at the library I'll be in. Hopefully can find it before the 3rd as I'm going away for a month!

message 8: by Karen (new)

Karen Mockoviak | 274 comments As soon as I finish my current read I will be joining this discussion!

message 9: by Brian (new)

Brian (brianfinn) | 638 comments They are all checked out of every library in my area (like 20-25 libraries each with more than one copy - all checked out ughh). I may or may not be joining in on this one, but it is definitely high on my To Read list.

message 10: by Sarah (new)

Sarah This was a group read a few months back in another goodreads group and nobody could get hold of a copy at the library so I don't think anyone ended up discussing it. Hopefully now a few months on, it will be a bit more accessible. I have it on my kindle but I think I'm unlikely to read it this month as I have quite a few others set out to read. I loved The Kite Runner and the authors style of writing so I'm sure I'd like his others but my other books just seem to get precedence!

message 11: by Karen (new)

Karen Mockoviak | 274 comments I was able to get it as an e book from goodreads. I don't know if that helps anyone.

message 12: by Alissa (new)

Alissa I'll be joining this discussion - just need to get the book. I attempted the audio version but the narrators accent was a bit too thick for me! Looking forward to my first group read! Will there be a reading schedule or is it just comment as you go along?

I also loved The Kite Runner but it was so sad!

Aaand right after I said this, I placed a hold on the first available copy and just got an email now that it's available for me to pick up. So it looks like I will be joining you guys!

Since I've joined the group, we haven't kept to a reading schedule for our group's monthly book read as far as I know. It would be a fun idea in theory, but I think it's too difficult to know how many people are going to end up participating by the first of the month, people acquire and begin reading the book at different times throughout the month (which is perfectly fine/understandable :)), and of course, we all read at different paces.

What we always do is assign a discussion leader - usually the person who nominated the book or a moderator - and this forum will be split up into different segments by chapter or parts of the book. That way, people comment there as they go along without having to worry about spoilers.. It works very well when we have a large and active group of readers!

Theresa~OctoberLace (octoberlace) | 773 comments Does anyone know if And the Mountains Echoed follows the same characters as The Kite Runner and A Thousand Splendid Suns, or does it stand on its own?
I'm #31 in line for 1 copy on OneClickDigital and #46 of 53 in line for 11 copies on Overdrive. Chances are I'll just buy the Kindle version.

message 35: by Kathryn (new)

Kathryn | 581 comments Quick question: in the first chapter, when the father is telling the kids a story, he starts with something along the lines of "Once upon a time, when divs and jinns and giants roamed the land..." - any ideas what divs are? Even after finishing that chapter, I'm still none the wiser? Is there an English equivalent? I think jinns are genies, but divs has me a bit puzzled! Devils, perhaps?

message 36: by Lynn (new)

Lynn (lmelliott) | 686 comments You're right Kathryn. I googled "div meaning in Afghanistan" and found several references .... all pretty much meant devil.
