priya (gpriyaa) I was just wondering how you pronounce everyone's names because I often pronounce names differently than they actually are or different from some of my friends. For example...

For valentine I always pronounced his name valenteen. Even after knowing that's not how you pronounce his name I still call him that

For Jem I call him Jzh- ehm some other people say his name the same way you say gem

For Gideon I call him Gid- ee- on one of my friends pronounced his name differently I forgot how though

So I'm wondering how you guys pronounce the name of the characters of TID and TMI. Not necessarily Jem Gideon and valentines name but any name you think people might pronounce differently. Or your just curious about how others pronounce it.

if you pronounce the names differently doesn't mean you can't read. It's a strange thing to say. I've read these books in dutch so I pronounce some names differently because I am from Belgium. Why would I pronounce them like they "should" be. This doesn't mean I can't read now does it? How you pronounce a name can be determined by many things, language, previous experiences,...
I don't want to be mean but I just thought it was a weird thing to say because I can read fine. :)

Shazzah pacey (shadowhunter last name nightraven) :D (Shazzahnightraven) | 391 comments even tho my friend says 'ma-reece'

message 12: by Naomi (new)

Naomi Speakman (missmorgenstern) | 1379 comments That's how I pronounce it.

Meliorn I have trouble with. Is it Mel-E-orn?

message 13: by Alexsandralee (new)

Alexsandralee Medina (doublea111814) | 62 comments I believe so...

message 14: by Daniellle (new)

Daniellle | 5 comments Meliorn- Mel-iron is how I originally pronounced it until I realized I looked at it wrong and saw that it is probably actually Mel-ee-orn, but I still pronounce it my original way.
Maryse- Muh-reese. I get that it is actually May-ris, but first impressions can ruin us.
Gideon- Originally I said Gee-day-un until I realized its Gid-ee-un. I have since corrected my pronunciation to the correct way.
Magnus- Mag-nis. Mag-nuhs sounds weird.

message 15: by priya (new)

priya (gpriyaa) I pronounce valentine's name val-en-teen I know it's wrong but I don't like the actuall pronunciation as his name so I just call him that

message 16: by [deleted user] (new)

How do you guys pronounce Luke's full
name, Lucian? I say Loo-see-in. But I guess some say it Loo-shin or Loo-shun.

message 17: by priya (new)

priya (gpriyaa) I pronounce it lucy-ehn

message 18: by [deleted user] (new)

Yeah that's pretty much how I say it too. How do you pronounce the -iel at the end of the majority of the angel names? I always say Raz-ee-el or Ith- ur-ee-el. But some may say Raz-eel.

message 19: by priya (new)

priya (gpriyaa) Ee-el is how I pronounce it

message 20: by [deleted user] (new)

Stele. In the codex it is pronounced Steh-lay, I prefer to say steel. I think it sounds better..

message 21: by priya (new)

priya (gpriyaa) I pronounce it steh-lay I thinks it's easier to say (I'm a lazy person :P)

message 22: by Naomi (new)

Naomi Speakman (missmorgenstern) | 1379 comments Can any of you guys pronounce 'similarly'? Because I can't.

message 23: by priya (new)

priya (gpriyaa) Sometimes I can't sometimes I can't

message 24: by priya (new)

Em Tee | 1 comments Don't know if anyone will see this, but I've always wondered, how do you pronounce the last name "Carstairs" Is it just car-stairs?? Please say it ain't so :p

☾ Liz ☆ Stellar Kitten Book Reviews ☆ I remember waiting for the movie to come out because my friend and I disagreed/didn't know how to pronounce "stele".... we both watched/listened intently during the whole movie and they never once said it xD we were so mad haha

message 27: by Edacheeky (last edited Nov 23, 2016 02:51AM) (new)

Edacheeky | 48 comments Valentine - Val-uhn-tie-n
Jem - J-ehm (like gem)
Gideon - Gid-ee-on
Jessamine - Jess-ah-muhn or Jess-ah-mean
Clary - Claire-ee
Jace - Jayce
Aline - Ah-lean (even though I realised after reading TMI that it's actually Ay-lean/A-Lean -- A pronounced like when referring to the letter A -- I can't help but still read it mentally as 'Ah-lean')
Maryse - Ma-reece even though I know it's May-rhs, although Robert on the show pronounces it "Mair-us"
Stele - Steel-ey
Parabatai - Pah-rab-ah-tie (said very fast so the sounds combine but Cassandra Clare said it's supposed to be Parrah-BAH-tie (emphasis on BAH sound)
Nephilim - Nef-ill-im (I originally thought the word was nephilium so I was pronouncing it like nef-eel-ee-um for so long until I realised I was reading it wrong)

message 28: by Heather (new)

Heather | 87 comments one thing i have to say:
stele is pronounced like 'steel'

message 29: by Heather (new)

Heather | 87 comments well really just my opinion, but the way they say it in the show sounds stupid and when i saw that word, that is how i first pronounced it in my head

message 30: by Heather (new)

Heather | 87 comments I guess in the end it just depends on where you're from

message 31: by Paula (new)

Paula (paulapanther) | 9 comments in the audiobooks they also pronouns it steh-lay
