message 1: by Zulfiya (new)

Zulfiya (ztrotter) Do you want to read a massive book and too hesitant to read it on your own? This is the folder where you can find your buddy reader.

Let the group know what you want to read, and someone might join you. I am sure buddy readers make the reading journey more enjoyable. In addition, it is a nice stimulus to keep reading.

message 2: by Zulfiya (new)

Zulfiya (ztrotter) I am reading The Goldfinch this January. Anyone for a long ride?

message 3: by Luffy Sempai (new)

Luffy Sempai (luffy79) Hi I'd like to read the book, but I'd like to start around the 10th of January. Meanwhile I have greater faith in the Man Booker prize winner, The Luminaries.

message 4: by Zulfiya (new)

Zulfiya (ztrotter) I also bought Luminaries on the day of its announcement as a winner (and I did not know it would win. everyone was saying it was Colm Toibin's turn), but I plan to read it in February. Maybe someone else wants to read it now and will join you; otherwise, I can sure wait till January 10 and start with Goldfinch.

message 5: by Luffy Sempai (new)

Luffy Sempai (luffy79) Zulfiya wrote: "I can sure wait till January 10 and start with Goldfinch. "

Great! Tell me when to PM you. I don't want to clog the boards needlessly. Btw I read only on my kindle, so I can't bookmark individual pages, only percentages. I think I'll read The Goldfinch by Donna Tartt in 10 days.

message 6: by Zulfiya (new)

Zulfiya (ztrotter) PM my any time, and I will respond ASAP.

message 7: by Deana (new)

Deana (ablotial) I'm reading The Goldfinch with another group as our January read, and I'd be happy to contribute to any discussions that happen in this group as well :)

message 8: by Zulfiya (new)

Zulfiya (ztrotter) The more the better! Yay!

message 9: by Kristi (new)

Kristi (kristicoleman) Hey Everyone, I'm planning on doing a Jane Austen challenge in 2014 and was wondering if anyone else was interested. The Challenge will consist of reading all of Jane Austen's novels within the year. Anyone want to join me??

I'll be reading: Emma, Pride and Prejudice, Sense and Sensibility, Persuasion, Mansfield Park and Northanger Abbey

message 10: by Luffy Sempai (new)

Luffy Sempai (luffy79) I'm interested in reading Persuasion and Mansfield Park. I've read P&P to disastrous results. Gave it a 1/5.

message 11: by Kara (new)

Kara I'm interested in your Austen challenge. I've already read Pride & Prejudice and Persuasion, but I'd be up for joining for the others.

I was also thinking when I finished, I'd read The Jane Austen Book Club too.

message 12: by Linda (new)

Linda | 1425 comments I would be interested in reading Northanger Abbey along with you, but I have already read the rest of them (and enjoyed them thoroughly!).

message 13: by Alana (new)

Alana (alanasbooks) | 456 comments I did all the Austen books last year. It was a lot of fun! You really get to see how they are all different (and also all the same).

Kara, I got a few pages into Jane Austen Book Club and bailed, but you might like it, who knows.

message 14: by John (new)

John (johnred) | 364 comments I'm currently reading The Wind-Up Bird Chronicle. I'm almost 20% into it right now, but at the moment I'm making very slow progress, so if anyone is interested in buddy-reading it, I'm sure you could catch up easily :)

message 15: by Sam (new)

Sam (aramsamsam) Kristi wrote: "Hey Everyone, I'm planning on doing a Jane Austen challenge in 2014 and was wondering if anyone else was interested. The Challenge will consist of reading all of Jane Austen's novels within the ye..."

Up until now I've only read Northanger Abbey, and I'd love to join in a Pride and Prejudice discussion, since I plan to read it this year. I won't have time for the rest, though...

message 16: by Kristi (new)

Kristi (kristicoleman) Maybe what I'll do is post a thread here with the schedule I'm looking at for reading and then anyone who wants to jump in for a book can when it comes around. What do you all think?

Emma will be my first read.

message 17: by Luffy Sempai (new)

Luffy Sempai (luffy79) Someone please coordinate these requests into buddy reads. It seems a bit hectic at the moment, especially with the Jane Austen future readers. Like I said before I want to read Emma and Persuasion and Mansfield Park.

message 18: by Kristi (new)

Kristi (kristicoleman) Luffy, I'm on the Jane Austen one, and I know Zulfiya is on the Goldfinch read. We are getting the threads ready to open, it might take us a day or so thought.

Luffy Sempai (luffy79) Kristi wrote: "Luffy, I'm on the Jane Austen one, and I know Zulfiya is on the Goldfinch read. We are getting the threads ready to open, it might take us a day or so thought."

Okay then. I'll wait. I've freed up even more time for reading and I'm raring to go.

Just so you know, Emma will be read this and next month (Jan & Feb), so if you wanted to get started reading that you could.

Sounds great! I'll definitely join in one of the Austen reads, so I'll be on the lookout for the schedule. Thanks Kristi!

I'm on it.

message 23: by Becky (new)

Becky I'll try the Jane Austen challenge, don't know how well I'd keep up though. Can I just quit my
Job and read?

Kristi (kristicoleman) Becky wrote: "I'll try the Jane Austen challenge, don't know how well I'd keep up though. Can I just quit my

lol...wouldn't that be the life!! Glad to have you on the Jane Austen Challenge, I'm starting Emma today and will be reading it through February, so hopefully that gives us all enough time, but if not, just comment as you go along.

message 25: by Kristina (new)

Kristina (kristina3880) Sometime before the movie comes out, I will be reading Winter's Tale by Mark Helprin. If anyone is interested let me know. Right now I am still reading Under the Dome for this group and pathetically far behind.

message 26: by Zulfiya (new)

Zulfiya (ztrotter) Kristina, how about February March? January is PACKED!

message 27: by Kristina (new)

Kristina (kristina3880) I was thinking around March. I want to finish Under the Dome before I take this one on. January is looking pretty tempting to join in on some others buddy reads.

message 28: by Delmy (new)

Delmy (needfulreads) Kristina wrote: "Sometime before the movie comes out, I will be reading Winter's Tale by Mark Helprin"

I would love to read this book with you guys.

message 29: by Delmy (last edited Feb 02, 2014 08:37PM) (new)

Delmy (needfulreads) I would like to read:

The Terror by Dan Simmons
The Terror By Dan Simmons

Anyone care to join me?
Would anyone like to start in March or earlier?

message 30: by Becky (new)

Becky Oh I really do. But not sure ice got time right now. Let me check my schedule and I'll let you know? I LOVE that author but haven't read nearly as much from him as I'd like!

message 31: by John (last edited Feb 02, 2014 08:24PM) (new)

John (johnred) | 364 comments Ooh, it looks like my local library has The Terror in audiobook! I would definitely join in for that! :)

Edit: Oh no, the audiobook is abridged! Man, why would they do that??...Oh well - I will still join in, it will just be a little more challenging to keep up.

I always wonder why they would abridge books...seems like such a waste.

I'll join in with you - I started reading a few days ago for just the same reason. I'm about 200 pages in but look forward to the discussion.
So far I'll say that I'm seeing a little "Gangs of New York"

message 34: by Zulfiya (new)

Zulfiya (ztrotter) Guys, if you want to read something together, I will encourage you to create a a general thread for one book you are discussing, if you are really willing to read and discuss it is a small group.

I will be willing to help you with the thread, similar to the one we have for The Goldfinch.

Linda | 1425 comments Kristina wrote: "Sometime before the movie comes out, I will be reading Winter's Tale by Mark Helprin. If anyone is interested let me know. Right now I am still reading [book:Under the D..."

I'm interested in reading this book, but wouldn't have the time until March when one of my other reads wraps up. I'll be on the lookout for when you start and I'll jump in if the timing is right. I realize the movie comes out in 2 weeks, so I might miss the boat on this one!

message 36: by Zulfiya (new)

Zulfiya (ztrotter) If you are willing to wait, I will join you in March as well.

message 37: by Delmy (new)

Delmy (needfulreads) If you guys are reading it in march i will try to join in.

message 38: by Kristina (new)

Kristina (kristina3880) I am all about reading Winter's Tale in March. I am super excited about it!!!

message 39: by Linda (new)

Linda | 1425 comments Kristina wrote: "I am all about reading Winter's Tale in March. I am super excited about it!!!"

Yay! OK, I'll be on the lookout for getting a copy of it this month.

message 40: by Zulfiya (new)

Zulfiya (ztrotter) So are we all set to read Winter's Tale in March?

Linda, Delmy, Kristina, Zulfiya. Add your name to the list if you want.

Quirks59m. I know you have already started. WOuld you like to put it on hold and wait till March? It is up to you :-)

Everybody, please confirm that you are serious about this buddy read.

message 41: by Delmy (new)

Delmy (needfulreads) yeah, i am in. I should have a copy by then.

message 42: by Linda (new)

Linda | 1425 comments I am in also. I will try to keep up with the reading, not sure at what pace these buddy reads tend to be at.

I think that I'll keep reading, but I will probably follow the discussion as it will still be pretty fresh.

I'm very new to how book clubs work on Goodreads but this one popped up in my email and Becky said y'all might be looking for members. If you are talking about Mark Helprin's Winter Tale Id be interested in joining (granted I had to Google it). I just need to know what the rules/expectations/procedures are for the Buddy Reads.

message 45: by Zulfiya (last edited Feb 05, 2014 01:10PM) (new)

Zulfiya (ztrotter) Hello, Kirstie

Buddy reads are very informal. We have a lax reading schedule (not about dates, but about portions) and we usually post when we think we are ready to post. It is all in one thread, a special thread for a particular novel, and then we comment and mark spoilers. We just finished another buddy read The Goldfinch, and you can see how things are rolling there. We only marked spoilers, and it is easy using 'some html is ok' button in the right corner of your comment box.

https://www.goodreads.com/topic/show/...

We also are going to read a new book about India/Asia and you can nominate one if you have something that fits the themed requirements.

I'm so in if y'all have me. Stupid question, what are html comments?

message 47: by Zulfiya (new)

Zulfiya (ztrotter) Are you posting from your desktop or iOS like smartphone and/or Kindle? In the latter case, you might not see this button.

If it is a laptop or a desktop, right above the comment box where you are typing there is this button 'some html is ok' It helps to mark spoilers , underscore, italicize or boldface the text.
Click on it and it will give you what you have to type before and after the message to either mark it like spoilers or underscore the message. For example,
It is wonderful to have new members who are willing to participate .

Or a spoiler (view spoiler)

message 48: by Deana (new)

Deana (ablotial) I would call it a link rather than a button. 'post' is a button :)

But yes, right above the comment box, between the last post on the page and the actual box you type in.

message 49: by Linda (new)

Linda | 1425 comments I just ordered a used copy of Winter's Tale so I'll get it in time for our Buddy Read! Couldn't find it nearby, and of course with the movie coming out the libraries all had more holds than available copies. Looks like our library system has on order another 35 copies yet to arrive.

message 50: by Zulfiya (new)

Zulfiya (ztrotter) I will possibly buy tonight too:-)
