As someone who used to read a lot of Pratchett, everyone should read Guards, Guards.
To not read it would be a waste of a life.

I've heard very good things about Guards, Guards.

And if you haven't read Good Omens by Pratchett and Gaiman, I highly recommend it!
I have a confession....
I hate Dickens. I really, really hate Dickens. In fact there's no author I hate more than Dickens, except Wilkie Collins - who was a contemporary.
I've given the man a good go: Bleak House and Tale of Two Cities, but I can't stand his style.
... Not that I'm giving my opinion of away of Dodger or anything: being a class warrior I'm fascinated by the period, between the social Darwinism, the Fabians, the anarchists, the begins of the labour movement and the codified class system it's bloody fascinating.
Plus it's staggering to think about how much has changed in a relatively short space of time: how young police forces as we know them are (1829!), or how London expanded during the industrial revolution.
Fact Time folks, in 1810 London had about 850,000 citizens, which rose to almost 5 million by the turn of the century!
... But I still hate Dickens.
