Breathing in the Pages ღ discussion

I've been doing a lot of reading of teen and ya stories. (Favourite is Wicked Lovely, least favourite is TMI) All the girls, because they're mostly about girls, are like 16 or 17. Can't remember the last time that there was someone in there 20's. Except the girl from Darkfever by Moning and I'm not even sure if that counts as a ya book officially.

Note, I'm not a teen myself, but I used to be! And I still like teen books. I just finished Immortal Rules and it was tight. Lol.

Doesn't a teen or ya book just mean that it's suitably for readers teens and up? It's not like it's forbidden to older readers, so how come there aren't some older protagonists? Do books with older protagonists flop or something? Do people just hate them?

I'm working on a novel with a girl who's 21. I'd consider it to be ya because there's a whole lot of getting powers, and family drama, a smidge of girl finds sword... It's geared towards the young reader, nothing overly graphic, kinda like Tithe. Is 21 just too old to be likeable?

thats actually true come to think about it...but I have read quite a few books with older main characters but nothing close to the amount of books with younger girls. Maybe it could be because that older teen/early 20s age is the age everybody wants to be? Also being a teen myself i would rather read about something i can either relate with or something in my near future.

With all that said with a good writer the main character could be a 50 year old woman and still rock so it all comes down to the plot and the writing style/quality.

21 is definetly not too old to be likeable and tithe was pretty good so i would definetly read your book!
