Werner | 2694 comments What were your top favorite reads in 2013 (not necessarily published in 2013, but that you read that year)? Try to pick the top five or so best of the best (you can list trilogies together as one, for instance).

2013 was a good reading year for me; I read 34-36 books (depending on how you count omnibus volumes) and one more that was an unpublished beta read, which is quite a lot for me given my limited time for reading. (Some were short, but this total doesn't count single short stories.) Of these, 19 got five stars from me, and eight more got four stars, so I really liked about 3/4 of what I read. My top favorites were:
1. The Deed of Paksenarrion by Elizabeth Moon (omnibus volume of the entire trilogy).
2. The Hunger Games and Catching Fire, both by Suzanne Collins. (I'm counting these as one because they're both part of the Hunger Games trilogy; the only reason I didn't read Mockingjay yet is because when the BC library tried to order it, our wholesalers were tmporarily sold out!)
3. Skinwalker by Faith Hunter.
4. Mareritt, and...
5. Vingede, both by Krisi Keley.

This past year, I indulged my taste for the action heroine motif more than usual, and started exploring the urban fantasy field, where I'd barely scratched the surface before. My list was influenced by (and indicates) both factors.

Werner | 2694 comments Charly, the only book on your list that I've read myself is Bury My Heart at Wounded Knee. It's not one that I'd say I "enjoyed," as such --it's not the type of history that lends itself to feel-good enjoyment. :-( But I have to say that it's a great, eye-opening book, that deserves a very wide readership. (Like, everybody!)

Werner | 2694 comments No, Charly, you didn't make any error; I understood what you meant! I was just describing my own reaction.
