Annie, Inferno was my first completed book of 2014 and I really liked it! It was very fast-paced and intense. I liked it way better than The Lost Symbol.

message 6: by Annie (new)

Annie | 424 comments Elyse, Wonderful! It's moving up to the top of my TBR pile, thank you!

message 8: by Charleen (new)

Charleen (charleenlynette) | 1688 comments Good luck meeting your goals this year!

(Also, for what it's worth, I totally agree about Inferno; it's definitely better than The Lost Symbol.)

5. Where'd You Go, Bernadette by Maria Semple"

How was Lost Lake? I have the NetGalley ARC of it.

message 11: by Annie (new)

Annie | 424 comments Elyse, Lost Lake was a fun, quick read. As with her previous books, Sara Addison Allen has created some wonderful characters.

message 14: by Charleen (new)

Charleen (charleenlynette) | 1688 comments I had Lost Lake out from the library, but I had to return it before I got a chance to read it. Hoping I can get it back soon.

message 15: by Annie (new)

Annie | 424 comments Charleen, I'd hate to count how many times that has happened to me. The worst is when you get into the book and then life happens and you run out of time before you get to finish. I have many index cards with book titles and page numbers listed for when I get to take out those books again.

message 17: by Charleen (new)

Charleen (charleenlynette) | 1688 comments I make a point of not starting a book if I'm not sure I can finish it in time, but on the rare occasion that it happens, I usually just keep the book and pay the late fee. Unless it has extra holds on it. It drives me nuts when I have a hold on a book and the person ahead of me doesn't return it on time, so I never want to be that person.

Charleen (charleenlynette) | 1688 comments I really liked A Discover of Witches. Can't wait until the last book comes out!

message 23: by Annie (new)

Annie | 424 comments Charleen, I really enjoyed A Discovery of Witches also. I'm looking forward to moving on to book 2, which should line me up nicely for the release date of book 3!

Annie wrote: "15. The Storied Life of A. J. Fikry by Gabrielle Zevin"

How did you like it? I have it from NetGalley but haven't read it yet. I liked Memoirs of a Teenage Amnesiac but didn't like All These Things I've Done. So far Zevin is a hit or miss for me.

message 26: by Annie (new)

Annie | 424 comments Quirky characters, small town bookstore - how could I resist! I rated it 4 stars. It was an enjoyable, but quick, read for me. Not much food for thought.

message 28: by Hillary (new)

Hillary (hmom) | 352 comments My DD worked on the movie Dark Places. In fact she got Gillian Flynn's autograph for me. I am curious how the movie compare to the book.

message 29: by Annie (new)

Annie | 424 comments How exciting for your DD! I didn't realize they were making Dark Places into a movie. It will be interesting to see how closely they stick to the book.

message 30: by Annie (new)

Annie | 424 comments Hillary, Did your DD get GF's autograph in your book or separately? My brother in law once ran into Stephen King in Boston (leaving a baseball game) and was able to locate a scrap of paper for his autograph. My sister is a huge King fan so what a treasure for her!

Oh, I thought they were only doing Gone Girl! Sweet! I really liked Dark Places.

message 32: by Hillary (new)

Hillary (hmom) | 352 comments The autograph was on sheet of paper.

Dark Places was filmed in Shreveport LA. The director is same one who directed Sarah's Key.

message 33: by Annie (new)

Annie | 424 comments Wow! I really enjoyed Sarah's Key (book and movie), looking forward to seeing Dark Places. Thanks Hillary!

Annie, I started a seried by Susan Wiggs and it was really good. Seeing your review reminded me that there are still a bunch of books in that series!

message 37: by Annie (new)

Annie | 424 comments Andrea, I enjoyed The Apple Orchard by Wiggs enough to purchase the next in the Bella Vista series when it was released, I'm considering it a summer indulgence, lol!

message 38: by Annie (new)

Annie | 424 comments 22. The September Society by Charles Finch. The Charles Lenox series is a fun read. Love the time period, love the characters!

message 39: by Annie (new)

Annie | 424 comments 23. Burial Rites by Hannah Kent. Such a powerful story!

message 40: by Elyse, Moderator (new)

Elyse (winesaboutbooks) | 8826 comments Mod
Burial Rites is in my TBR!

message 41: by Annie (new)

Annie | 424 comments 24. Elizabeth Is Missing by Emma Healey. This one will haunt me for awhile.

message 42: by Annie (new)

Annie | 424 comments 25. To Tuscany With Love by Gail Mencini. This was a traveling book that I joined in on; not really my type of story.

26. Goodnight June by Sarah Jio. Pleasant summer read!

message 44: by JanB (new)

JanB | 980 comments Annie, I have this on my bookshelf waiting to be read. Thoughts on the book?

All the Things is also on my TBR.

message 46: by Annie (new)

Annie | 424 comments Jan and Elyse, I really enjoyed "All the Light We Cannot See". I liked the author's writing style, and loved the characters. The book jumps around a bit but that wasn't a problem for me. This was my first time reading anything by this author, but I'll be adding his other works to my TBR pile!

message 47: by Hillary (new)

Hillary (hmom) | 352 comments Annie I started reading book & enjoying it so far

message 48: by Annie (new)

Annie | 424 comments Hillary, The story moves along at a good pace. Enjoy!

Karol | 221 comments I just added All the Light We Cannot See to my to-read list also!

Annie | 424 comments 28. The Fleet Street Murders by Charles Finch. Fun series to read, looking forward to the next Charles Lenox mystery.
