I'm sure we all have really long to-read lists, I sure know it's the bane of my life.

But there are some you really really want to read. The ones that are accomplishments or friends favourites, or something that's been sitting on your shelf for years.

What are the 5 books you really really want to read this year?

message 2: by Amber (last edited Jan 02, 2014 11:37AM) (new)

Amber (amberterminatorofgoodreads) The Golem and the Jinni
The Shining Girls

these 2 I really want to read that two friends recommended to me.

Illusion
Kingdom Keepers 7
These 2 I'll be reading in April as they both come out then.

I'm reading the bible too as part of a bible reading challenge my church is doing to read the bible in a year so started that yesterday with my mom.

Only 5? *whimpers*

Well... I definitely want to read Joyce's Ulysses and get started on Proust's In Search of Lost Time series/novel-in-volumes/whatever-it-is. So there's 2. There are loads that I plan to read, most of which I've been looking forward to for a long time, but as for really-really-want-to-reads...

The Book Thief
Vanity Fair
The Grapes of Wrath

Wow, that was painful...

message 7: by dely (new)

dely I would like to read:

The "Veda" or at least an introduction to them.
The Upanishads, same thing as with the Veda. It's nearly impossible to read all the Upanishad, so I will be happy to read a good introduction to them.
The "Purana". Same thing as with the other books.

These are all spiritual and religious texts from Hinduism.

Till now I am sure I want to read these three books.

message 8: by Kassandra (new)

Kassandra | -1 comments Only 5? That's a really tough question Holly! I've selected these ones because they've been sitting on my shelf for a while and even though I'm really excited about them...another book has always been chosen in its place.

Jack of Diamonds - Bryce Courtenay
Voluntary Madness - Norah Vincent
Kite Runner - Khaled Hasseini
The Light Between Oceans - M.L. Stedman
The Last Letter from your Lover - Jojo Moyes

I really want to read Anna Karenina too!

Luffy Sempai (luffy79) Holly wrote: "I really want to read Anna Karenina too!"

Do you have any prior knowledge about the book? Me, I'm going in totally oblivious.

message 27: by Holly, That Geeky One (last edited Jan 12, 2014 03:53AM) (new)

Holly (hollycoulson) | 1949 comments Mod
Honestly, none at all. I'll probably do some research right before I read it, just so I have a small idea.

Edit: We could do a buddy-read if you want. Would be quite interesting!

message 28: by Luffy Sempai (new)

Luffy Sempai (luffy79) I'd be delighted to. But don't you have enough on your plate, figuratively? If I choose a book to read, I usually read it quickly. We probably won't be able to finish it at the same time...

message 29: by Amber (new)

Amber (amberterminatorofgoodreads) Salem's lot is pretty good. I read it last year and it is stephen king's vampire novel.

message 30: by Luffy Sempai (new)

Luffy Sempai (luffy79) Amber wrote: "Salem's lot is pretty good. I read it last year and it is stephen king's vampire novel."

So I've heard. I'm hasty to read more Stephen King. I've already read the first two Dark Tower series books.

message 31: by Holly, That Geeky One (new)

Holly (hollycoulson) | 1949 comments Mod
Luffy, how about we don't do an official buddy read, but when we both finish it in our own time, we can talk about it over PM.

That stops the pressure of finishing it quickly. We can just talk about it when we're both done?

I like going blind into a novel. No expectations beforehand leaves no disappointment sometimes :)

message 33: by Holly, That Geeky One (new)

Holly (hollycoulson) | 1949 comments Mod
I'm half and half, Chase. Depending on the book, I'll meticulously research it, or I'll go in completely blind.

Going into books blind can really provide some spectacular surprises!

message 34: by Kassandra (new)

Kassandra | -1 comments Chase - I'm a lot like that as well. I have found that if my expectations are built up too much for a book by recommendations, then I end up disappointed. Going in blind (sometimes I will pick up a book just because of the cover!) has given me some wonderful surprises.

message 35: by Roseanne (new)

Roseanne | 1239 comments I pick based on cover sometimes too.

message 37: by Fi (new)

Fi (welshfi) | 6 comments For such a straight-forward question, this is really difficult to answer! It's really made me think though...

1. A Clash of KingsA Clash of Kings, George R. R. Martin
2. The Pillars of the Earth, Ken Follett
3. Consider Phlebas, Iain M. Banks
4. Death or Victory: The Battle of Quebec and the Birth of Empire, Dan Snow and
5. Tower, Nigel Jones.

No doubt I'll change my mind tomorrow! I'd be delighted if I get through these though

message 38: by Jazzy (last edited Jan 19, 2014 01:11PM) (new)

Jazzy Lemon (jazzylemon) | 14 comments If anyone wants to read Anna Karenina slowly and savour it over a bit of time i'll be happy to do a read through. I've got the Pevear and Volokhonsky version. This is a strange question though. i'm currently reading 17 books, and have just finished 6 one day last week and finished about 5 more since January started. Making 11 finished in the last 19 days. I'd like to finish all 17 of these and read quite a few others besides.
