Aphromisna (bopbear1324) House of Night rules for anyone who thinks they don't like Vampire books or didn't like Twilight, I recommend reading Marked, the first book in HON.
Let me think here what books are in my locker at school which is also known as the Library throughout the staff and eighth grade class?
Every book in House of Night and The Mortal Instruments. Then we have Spirit Animals of which I hope my friends and I can get some more of those for reading. And lots more that I can't think of right now.

Aphromisna (bopbear1324) Lizzy wrote: "I've read every HON book except for the brand new one that is probably already out for this year. I think the last book I read was Revealed. I've also read all books of TMI. I'm waiting for the new..."

The last HON which is Redeemed comes put sometime in October and the fourth novella Kalona's Fall comes out in a couple months. And the next TMI comes out in less than a month I think. Then Spirit Animals starts with the book Wild Born. It's written by different authors though. I have them in my books on here somewhere, if you want to look at what's out so far.

Hannah | 155 comments I loved Lord of the Flies too! I read it about two years ago and thought it was fantastic. Now I have to read it again for school and I'm so excited to do so! And I've never actually seen the movie.

message 29: by Wendy (new)

Wendy Bird The book Lord of the Flies is great. The black and white film i sthe best. The color one made later is okay. I prefer the older version. What do you think of what it says about *civilized* man?

message 30: by Wendy (new)

Wendy Bird Did you notice how the boys from the religious school (choir) are the most rabid? From them comes the murderous leader. Yet all of them return to primal fear and from reason to superstition. Very fine commentary on mankind.

message 31: by Wendy (new)

Wendy Bird I don't think it was rebellion as much as it was being thrown into a survival situation where their conditioning and restraint was removed and virtually irrelevant. They reverted to the savages they already are. The Beast is them.

message 32: by Wendy (last edited Feb 02, 2015 09:05AM) (new)

Wendy Bird The first B&W film of it really captured the surreal aspect of this nightmare for these boys. The scene where the fleeing boy stumbles into the sailor whose ship has come to rescue them is gripping. This one boy never lost his humanity and breaks down in a way that seems to say, now! You come only now! The other boys just stand there in the face of their return to reality, as if transported from another world. Which it was, the world they created for themselves through their own fears and return to savagery.

message 33: by Wendy (last edited Feb 02, 2015 10:05AM) (new)

Wendy Bird The change in behavior is characteristic of post apocalyptic books, where people are forced to compete for resources, food. It is a return to tooth and claw, survival, they revert to the lowest common denominator. One example is looting during a riot or war situation. Although for the boys on the island, they had food and water. The primal fear inside them set them on the road to discovering what evil is, an *other* that they could isolate from and name. One ongoing example are hate groups. Their feelings of security and stability are threatened and so they center on a particular minority group as the *evil one*. The Nazis had the Jews. The cops and racist America have the blacks and people of color. The named enemy, responsible for their troubles must be named, blamed, persecuted, their intention being to eradicate them. The enemy is always there within themselves, only they don't see it.

message 34: by Wendy (last edited Feb 02, 2015 10:39AM) (new)

Wendy Bird It's a favorite of mine.
Some people might become angry for me citing this example, but I recently watched a video of Richard Dawkins reading hate mail from *Christians*. Such fierce viciousness. The video is only one example when you also take into account the many Christian groups whose politics are to oppress and remove rights, even humanity from minorities such as atheists and gays. They have gotten very panicky over the recent trend everywhere that does not give special rights to Christians and the Christian religion. You hear the indictment over and over again. Either America is under judgement of God for allowing gays and atheists to have rights or God's judgement is about to fall because they have rights. Christians also claim persecution because this favoritism and special privileges continue to wane. This primal fear is an example of how they blame problems on minorities, the evil ones. One might note that they rarely attack majorities. Same way that the boys in LOTF used their strength to persecute the minority (more reasonable but less glamorous) and weaker boys. Only later do the weaker boys realize they are slaves to the more powerful tribe.
