Krishna Kanth | 6 comments I started reading PKD's The Man Who Japed, but am having trouble following with what's going on in the plot. I didn't understand anything in Chapter 2: Some Mrs. Sue Frost comes to Allen Purcell's office. Fine, but what happened after that was a complete blank to me, they discussed something about an envelope, a parcel, outplanet plants and stuff like that,,, I didn't understand what that was all about and what are the 'packets' that they keep talking about it??. Allen calls in some person named David Luddy ( and who is this Doris fellow??) And after some discussion between three (Allen, Mrs. Frost and Luddy)Allen all of a sudden fires Luddy for giving an (i didn't know what) opinion..

And they keep talking about - Myron, Morec, some Myron's note and what happened in chapter 3 who is Mavis.....???

PLEASE, I request.. Can somebody plz tell me what's going on in there??? I mean, I want to read and enjoy PKD's books very well, but I keep facing this problem always, this is my second book of PKD and I had same problematic experience when I read The Divine Invasion (my 1st Dick's book). I'm unable to visualize his settings and plots :(

HELP! HELP! HELP!

Pickle | 31 comments ive not read it so cannot help but i dont think you started on an 'easy' PKD book with The Divine Invasion. Id of recommended something a little easier to read and to introduce his style so like Ubik for example would have been a good choice.

Sorry for being of no help whatsoever.

Ubik is an expansion of PKD's novella "What the Dead Men Say". It's not completely the same, but it was the starting point and Ubik reuses his concept of half-life and communicating with the almost aka 'partial' dead.

You may want to read the novella first if you like to analyze works in order and see how the novel developed from the novella, but its certainly not required to understand or enjoy Ubik
