I am opening up the floor for discussion of titles for our next group read. Remember, I am trying to keep this democratic, so feel free to post suggestions here, or email me directly and I will create a poll to help us decide. We don't have to do it now, 'specially for those of you who are now addicted to Butcher *laughs evil laugh -bwa-ha-ha-ha! *grins evil grin* Just let me know.

Paul (merman1967) | 113 comments How about Dean Koontz's Frankenstein. Book one, Prodigal Son? By the way, I lost my copy of Dresden, finally found it and am half way done. Only negative was the woman = witch, man = wizard thing, but oi the whole I love it!

message 3: by Kim, Wild-eyed Bibliomaniac (new)

Kim (mrsnesbitt) | 629 comments Mod
O.K. everybody, what do you think of Koontz? I'm not a fan, but if that is what the group decides, that's what we'll read. Let me know.

Narzain | 75 comments Mod
I haven't read any of his, but his Frankenstein books have a pretty fierce following. I'm willing to give it a try.

Kim (mrsnesbitt) | 629 comments Mod
If there are no objections, then this will be our next selection. I will give it a few weeks so that we can all get our copies, yes, me too. As a side note, if there is ever a selection that anyone is uncomfortable with or just plain can't stand, please feel free to sit out the group read and join us for one that suits you. I do not wish to make anyone feel that they have to read something.

So, shall we say around July 22 as a target date?

message 6: by Kim, Wild-eyed Bibliomaniac (new)

Kim (mrsnesbitt) | 629 comments Mod
Here we are again people. What do you wish to read as a group next? Do you want to keep reading as a group, or would you like to take a month off? Would you all be open to re-reading (or reading for the first time) a classic? I am open to suggestions.

message 7: by Kim, Wild-eyed Bibliomaniac (new)

Kim (mrsnesbitt) | 629 comments Mod
Guy's, I'm serious. Do you want to continue with the group readings or should be abandon them entirely? If we're keeping them, then what should we read next? My vote is "To kill a mocking bird" by Harper Lee. Any thoughts?

message 8: by Paul (new)

Paul (merman1967) | 113 comments Sorry, been busy with semester-end crap. To Kill a Mockingbird sounds good to me.

message 9: by Kim, Wild-eyed Bibliomaniac (new)

Kim (mrsnesbitt) | 629 comments Mod
That's alright sweetie! I understand. Anyone else have a suggestion or a problem with my suggestion?

message 10: by Narzain, The Minister of Awesome (new)

Narzain | 75 comments Mod
Sounds okay to me.

message 11: by Kim, Wild-eyed Bibliomaniac (new)

Kim (mrsnesbitt) | 629 comments Mod
O.K. then, that will be the next read. I will send out a mass email soon with the start date.

Kim (mrsnesbitt) | 629 comments Mod
I know that we are currently in a discussion, but I would like to encourage all of you to start thinking to the next group read and start making suggestions. I was thinking sometime in October, maybe around the middle of the month or so.

O.K. it is time to seriously think of new books to read for our group read. I was thinking about suspending the group read until after the 1st of January, because I know at least 2 of you work retail and that your busy seasons are starting, and that at least 1 of you will be having school projects and semester finals. If this sounds good to you, we can make a list of suggestions and then look at that list at the begining of the year.

If you all think that you will be able to keep up a discussion and still keep up on your work, then I would be more than happy to keep the group reading and discussions going. Please let me know what you think.

message 14: by Narzain, The Minister of Awesome (new)

Narzain | 75 comments Mod
Yeah, I think that perhaps holding off until the new year would be a good idea.

As for suggestions, how about A Wrinkle In Time by Madeline L'Engle?

message 15: by Kim, Wild-eyed Bibliomaniac (new)

Kim (mrsnesbitt) | 629 comments Mod
I will add that to the shelf and we will vote on it in January if there are any more suggestions.

Kim (mrsnesbitt) | 629 comments Mod
I know that our next group read is next week, but I am looking to the next one for March/April. Should we go with a theme, or would you like to continue with just posting ideas? I will set up a hidden poll, and the results will be posted here when it close.

message 17: by DJ (new)

DJ (djdivaofjava) Can I suggest that we post the chosen book sooner as I am having difficulty getting a copy in time to start and will be too busy come February to participate if not read by then......
Sorry if I am being annoying....
It`s just another groupI am in has posted a list of Books for the coming year and it has made it much easier for me to track down secondhand copies as we are feeling the pinch.....and our library (which I confess I am not a member of)only has a very small selection.
:-)

You are not being annoying! Don't worry about when you get your copy. All discussions are open ended and with Narzain starting his new job today, we may be running a little behind anyway. (When we originally made the date we didn't know he would have a job to go to.) Take your time and just join in when you can. :)

O.K. majority rules and our poll says no to reading in a theme for our next group reading. I am taking suggestions, as always for our next read. I will keep an ongoing list of what we would like to read and then we can vote on it if need be. I would like to nominate "Inherit the Wind" or "Cather in the Rye".

message 21: by DJ (new)

DJ (djdivaofjava) I'll immediately second THE CATCHER IN THE RYE as I have a copy that keeps slipping through my reading radar :-)

message 22: by Kim, Wild-eyed Bibliomaniac (new)

Kim (mrsnesbitt) | 629 comments Mod
Shall I create a poll, or do we want to read that for our next read? Any other suggestions?

message 23: by Paul (new)

Paul (merman1967) | 113 comments THE CATCHER IN THE RYE works for me :)

message 24: by DJ (new)

DJ (djdivaofjava) Mmmm so looking good for TCITR.....

message 25: by Joy (new)

Joy I would read Catcher; I read it so long ago, it would be almost like reading it for the 1st time!

message 26: by DJ (new)

DJ (djdivaofjava) Hi Joy,
I love it when that happens particularly with a book you have truly loved!!
Sometimes I make myself wait to reread something just to let that happen.....

message 27: by Kim, Wild-eyed Bibliomaniac (new)

Kim (mrsnesbitt) | 629 comments Mod
O.K. then. Our next book will be Cather in the Rye. I think it will be late March then. I would like to have our discussion abuot Wrinkle wrapped up before we move onto the next one.

message 28: by Kim, Wild-eyed Bibliomaniac (new)

Kim (mrsnesbitt) | 629 comments Mod
O.K. people, it is time to start thinking about our next group read, and as alwoys I'm open to suggestions. I would like to suggest "Of mice and men" or "Inherit the wind". How about the rest of you?

message 29: by Narzain, The Minister of Awesome (new)

Narzain | 75 comments Mod
I'm partial to another foray into contemporary authors (and the possibility of getting our members hooked on another series, bwa-ha-ha). So I'd like to suggest 'Dead Witch Walking' by Kim Harrison.

message 30: by Kim, Wild-eyed Bibliomaniac (new)

Kim (mrsnesbitt) | 629 comments Mod

O.K. gang, July is approaching and again I am seeking group reading ideas. I am open to suggestions. I think I would like to mix it up and suggest our next read be a play. Not a book turned into a play, but the play itself. My suggestion: "Inherit the Wind".

message 32: by DJ (new)

DJ (djdivaofjava) OOooo Can I nominate PYGMALION by George Bernard Shaw.As I love My Fair Lady but I have never read the original.....

message 33: by Kim, Wild-eyed Bibliomaniac (new)

Kim (mrsnesbitt) | 629 comments Mod
Yes, you may suggest that. That is a good one. I will take suggestion for the next 2 weeks and then we will put it to a vote to keep it equal.

message 34: by DJ (new)

DJ (djdivaofjava) Thanks,It was late here and I aunt sure I had correctly picked up on the theme....
Come on everyone,SUGGESTIONS!!

message 35: by A. (new)

A. | 59 comments +I would like to suggest "Ender's Game".

Kim (mrsnesbitt) | 629 comments Mod
I am already thinking ahead to our next read, and I had an idea that may or not fly. What if we all read what we wanted, and then we post about it and see if the others have read it and how they feel about it? bOr should we just stay with one book at a time?

October will be "read a banned book" theme, so start thinking about one we haven't read as a group yet.

message 38: by DJ (new)

DJ (djdivaofjava) I think that might be a really good idea as we would hopefully encounter books that we know nothing about and people could try to explain their interest in it......
I certainly think ot would be a hung to do once or maybe twice a year.Personally I'm thinking of Summer and Christmas as it can be difficult to read a set book when busy with so many other things!! :-)

message 39: by Kim, Wild-eyed Bibliomaniac (new)

Kim (mrsnesbitt) | 629 comments Mod
Good suggestion. That is why I have offered to suspend the group read for the holliday times. Summer around here usualy means more time to read for most, but you never know. We will put it to a vote shortly.

message 40: by DJ (new)

DJ (djdivaofjava) I find that I get less chance to read in the summer with all the other things that need doing....The garden, trips,Dog Shows etc etc....
Look forward to the vote!
:-)

message 41: by Narzain, The Minister of Awesome (new)

Narzain | 75 comments Mod
As an alternative to suspending group read for the holidays, we might just have one book for both November and December. Just a thought.

message 42: by Kim, Wild-eyed Bibliomaniac (new)

Kim (mrsnesbitt) | 629 comments Mod
That too is a worthy idea. It will be kept in mind.

message 43: by A. (new)

A. | 59 comments I like the idea of reading books that have been banned. I like the fact that it makes you think.

message 44: by Kim, Wild-eyed Bibliomaniac (new)

Kim (mrsnesbitt) | 629 comments Mod
Just about all of the books we have selected are banned books, but I would like to select a book because it was banned. I think October is a good choice for this since banned book week occurs during this month.

message 45: by DJ (new)

DJ (djdivaofjava) Is there a chance of something banned and spooky?
:-)

message 46: by Kim, Wild-eyed Bibliomaniac (new)

Kim (mrsnesbitt) | 629 comments Mod
I'm sure there is, if you find one, suggest it. We will put it to a vote in September. Remember, the banned books will be Octobers discussion. Be sure to vote in our new poll regarding our group read choices for September.

message 47: by DJ (new)

DJ (djdivaofjava) Hi,does anyone know of a website or link to a list of banned books? I don't have much knowledge about this area as I read who I read and don't bother if it has previously been banned. So if I don't come up with a suggestion its because I don't think I have found enough information.....

http://www.banned-books.com It has lists of all banned and a books that have caused controversy.

Banned book week is September 25-October 2.

Right now I'm reading 'Catch-22', I'll tell you when I reach the 'offensive' part or whatever gave it it's list status (haven't seen it as yet)
