Souvik Jana (souvikj) | 7 comments The Looming Tower Al-Qaeda's Road to 9/11 by Lawrence Wright
The Looming Tower: Al-Qaeda's Road to 9/11 by Lawrence Wright

My Rating:- ★★★★★

Nonfiction or book on true events can be more thrilling than fiction when told in detail and the timeline of dramatic events are narrated by an expert narrator. Author Lawrence Wright served as a professor of English at the American University of Cairo. For a long time he observed the mood swing of the people of Egypt, the students of Cairo and in general the change in outlook of the Arab people from inside. The very next day after the fateful day of 9/11, on 12th September 2001 Lawrence Wright took on this project to look into the human story that led to this disaster and after interviewing hundreds of people around the world he has wrote The Looming Tower which has become the most appreciated book on 9/11 and most gripping nonfiction I have read so far.

Cold war is over. The rivalry and ghost war between the two blocks has become a topic of relative past. The world of twenty-first century is getting torn between the insurgencies by radical Islamists against the West and the retaliatory War on Terror. Author Wright wanted to describe the motivation that’s leading the people on both side.

With other components, this book describes the life and work of some key thinkers, planners and counter planners. It starts with the story of Sayyid Qutb, a man educated in the West, returned more radicalized and whose writing sowed the first seed of violence among the radicals. Then comes life of Dr. Ayman al-Zawahiri, the medical practitioner who created jihadi group against the oppressive Egyptian government and Osama bin laden, the heir of multibillion Saudi Bin-Laden construction company, the financier of the jihad and his mostly simple and impoverished life at the afghan camps. Also the book describes the life of the energetic and dominating head of FBI counterterrorism, John O’Neill, the effort of the FBI core group I-49 to neutralize al-Quaeda and the failure in this effort due to rivalry and lack of cooperation between CIA, FBI and NSA.
"On the morning after 9/11 when FBI agent Ali Soufan came to know that CIA and some people in the FBI had known more than a year and a half that two of the hijackers were in the country, he ran into the bathroom and retched."
In the book Lawrence Wright, to some extent wanted to describe the anger of Bin Laden towards USA mainly as progressiveness of the West and Laden’s opposition to modernity which I simply disagree with. Though extremist groups have always called for worldwide jihad, people have responded to them only when they felt oppressed and almost in all the cases, within the Islamic world. The main cause of Bin Laden’s anger was clearly the extended stay of US military in Saudi Arabia which is part of the USA’s effort to create military bases almost everywhere in the world.

After all it’s a book on tragedies. Tragedy in the death of nearly three thousand people at the 11th September attack, tragedy in death of almost twenty thousand civilians at Afghanistan from the attack by the coalition including the death of Ayman al-Zawahiri’s wife Azza and their baby Aisha who suffered from the Down syndrome. Above all, the tragedy is in some madman’s adoption of Quran to justify killing anyone in their way, the impression of Islam sometime becoming parallel to terrorism and in post 9/11 world, the looming sense of insecurity and distrust.

His research into Baha'ism, Buddhism, Christianity, Judaism, Hinduism, Islam, Sufism and Taoism greatly influences his spiritual and philosophical perspective. Souvik Jana (souvikj) | 7 comments In Cold Blood by Truman Capote
In Cold Blood by Truman Capote

My Rating:- ★★★★★

Kansas Farmer Slain, Family of Four is Slain in Kansas
is what a small headline at the back page of The New York Times read and Truman Capote decided, if humans are involved, there has to be a human story. Capote roamed rural Kansas for almost four years and started his story, who were the Clutters, where did the murderers come from and the detectives who went after them, what became of the small community afterwards, difficulties in the family, mistrust in the community, feelings in the murderers, remorse, indifference, introduction to some more bone chilling personalities and in due time the important question, why does the law abiding God fearing common citizenry want to see people hanged?

Overall Capote presents an extraordinary story behind a 'generally considered' ordinary event which he reached Kansas to research on, two days after the funeral of the slain family.
