Please spend a few minutes looking at Week 18's discussion threads (you should look at ALL classes' folders, not just your own). This is last week's folder.

Find a comment made by a fellow student that you find interesting and provocative. It could be something that you didn't think of, or something that is particularly well written, or something that looks at the question in a way that strikes you as interesting.

DO NOT CUT AND PASTE YOUR FELLOW STUDENT'S COMMENT. Instead, paraphrase your fellow student's comment in your own words (and you should name the student), then explain why this student's comment is interesting or different or striking.

Monica's discussion post is the one that I found well written and interesting. It really made me want to read the book. She explained how the quote retailed to the book really well and in detail. She says that everyone is afraid to talk to each other because they are being monitored. They can't trust each other because they are being watched by the police. The sentence that I found different and did not read about in everyone's else post was that it was very unhealthy for the people. I think that Monica's post was interesting.

Tasha | 14 comments I found Liam's week discussion 19 comment to be interesting. He explained how people are afraid of the government thus afraid of each other. He also explains how people are afraid that someone will turn in their friend just to gain something. I never thought about his statement before he posted the comment, so it really had me thinking. People will do anything just to gain something to their advantage, but is that really enough?

message 4: by Rocco (new)

Rocco Rinaldi-Rose (roccorr) | 40 comments I looked at Liam's discussion post for this assignment. I believe that his analysis of the first few pages of 1984 were very interesting and unusual. I believe that the idea that people are afraid of each other because they are afraid of the government is one that never even crossed my mind. The idea that this is a horror story also never occurred to me. Rather, I thought of the book as a dystopian story of right and wrong. For these reasons, I believe that Liam put a lot of effort and thought into his response.

message 5: by Michael (new)

Michael Marrero | 15 comments I found Kai's post very well written. He explains that the people have to follow the governments rules all the time. Kai also explains that people can not act the way they want to, only the government makes the people act or feel in a curtain way. This opened my mind showing me that the government also controls their people's emotions as well as everything else. This shows me that this government is going sow far as to make their citizens less then a human being and more like a puppet.

Monica | 22 comments I found Rocco's post to be the most intriguing, well written, and provocative because he phrased everything simply, yet completely delivering the message in a concise effective way. I thought it was interesting how he brought up the health aspect this has. Its a very good point because its not just an emotional issue but the fear becomes so powerful that your body can't take the amount of stress and as Rocco puts it "near-constant state of paranoia" that your body endures. Overall in his short summed up paragraph I think it completely captivated the way these people lived and made you really understand the situation.

Brian Rosario | 36 comments I found Cordell's post to be inspiring to me. He is saying that big brother is the cause of society being like it is in the book. I can kind of agree but I would say that big brother is like the government in the book. The quote is actually saying that everyone is in fear because of the government. So to connect everything together big brother is kind of the government. That is the cause on why the society is like it is in the book 1984.

cordelllane n summors (summorscl) | 19 comments I read Brian's post on the book. i found that he got to the point, that fear plays a major role in the book. The government keeps their eyes and ear close to the people.which now that i also read his response i can agree that you can connect big brother to the government, no i think big brother is the government. Always in some else business, looking for threats that will may or ma not expose their utopica for what it really is.A dictatorship in disguise.

message 9: by Julien (new)

Julien | 24 comments I like Brandyn's post, its short and to the point. He also answered all the questions correctly. In no way am I writing this solely because he's my friend. He also writes in a way where you know its a person writing, there's feeling behind the words.

message 10: by Nuridin (new)

Nuridin Wilkerson | 10 comments I like cordell's post. It can clearly show that not only that the book itself is good, but its also relatable. It is true and in the book and in real like, the government does pay close attention to our actions for personal and other reasons.

message 11: by Jeffrey (new)

Jeffrey Chan | 11 comments I also like cordell's post because it shows that the book is comparable to many things and comparing us and in the book, the government pays attention to people's actions because of many reasons like safety.

message 12: by Kyla (new)

Kyla Cain | 19 comments I like Willem's comment well written. He says that people are scared to be viewed as a threat to the government. He goes on to connect it to how people would really feel if this was happening to you. I felt as if he wasn't trying to drag out anything. That he was just trying to explain his views and support them. I mean How scary would it be to know that everything you do or say is monitored and our words can be misinterpreted as a threat.

message 13: by Brandyn (new)

Brandyn | 10 comments Julien wrote: "I like Brandyn's post, its short and to the point. He also answered all the questions correctly. In no way am I writing this solely because he's my friend. He also writes in a way where you know it..." yeah, Brandyn's is the best.

message 14: by Brandyn (new)

Brandyn | 10 comments I found Liam's post, and his point of view is quite interesting. I especially found his interpretation of it being a "horror story" very cool. Kudos!

message 15: by Liam (new)

Liam | 27 comments I looked at Rocco's post. Not only was it very well written and the argument very well articulated there was one thing that I noticed. The word "paranoia" was being thrown around a lot though I think it might be the wrong word to use. According to our friends at merriam webster, paranoia is not just accusing people of being against you but wrongly doing so. But in this society you are encouraged to do so. So, people aren't being paranoid, but, in a way, being normal.

message 16: by Imani (new)

Imani | 25 comments I looked at Julian's post. I like that he used the posters in school to describe his point. Another thing I liked was that he put his own feelings and personal opinion in the post.

message 17: by Miguel (new)

Miguel | 22 comments I read willems post and i found it interesting. I like how he said people are scared to be viewed as a threat to the goverment. This mad me thing like why would people feel as a threat. And i like how he tryed to connect it with us poeple. It made me think about this and i thought like do we feel this way. And if we do then there is something wrong going on.

message 18: by Gabe (new)

Gabe | 18 comments I like Cordell's post because unlike some post his is very realistic to modern day things like with the government and we can relate to seeing this everyday. He also makes the book seem interesting

message 19: by Web (new)

Web | 10 comments I believe that Rokkos post was very interesting he talked about how everyone in that dystopian future is afraid to communicate thoughts with one another and that this kind of stress will lead to health issues for example the ulcer that the main character has.

message 20: by Nichollas (new)

Nichollas Rampulla | 17 comments The comet that struck me was Julien's. He said that after he read the book he was terrified of the posters in the class room. This comet struck me because I also had a similar reaction since it is scary to think the government is watching you. How ever in the book he said people don't know if you are being watched all the time or if it is at random times. Also I'm not that afraid since out real government is watching us right now.

message 21: by Willem (new)

Willem | 21 comments I liked Tasha's post, and I believe that a few parallels can be drawn to her comment and my own. She explains how the thought police, the people who represent the forces of law and order in this society, watch every move. She then goes on to say that no one would have any sense of privacy or freedom.

Also, I have a theory:
~The NSA are Templars.
