Jay Howard (jay_howard) Did you know that if you have a book published as free on Smashwords (or elsewhere) you can force Amazon to price match to free? If you look at the bottom of the Product Description section you'll see a link to 'tell us about a lower price'. It's very quick and easy - just give them the URL of where it is cheaper, what price it is available and enter the date.

That said, to force them to take action on it you might find it needs more than one person to report it. We can help each other with that - post the details on this thread and we can all report lower prices for each other :)

We achieved it for this group's charity anthology and we're getting lots of downloads on Amazon as well as Smashwords:

Jay Howard (jay_howard) OK, yes I have an ulterior motive in starting this thread. I have another charity anthology set as free on Smashwords:

https://www.smashwords.com/books/view...

which I've told Amazon to price match and they just ignore my lone voice. If you'd like to help me, please report it as free here:

http://www.amazon.co.uk/As-The-Sun-Go...

and here:

http://www.amazon.com/As-The-Sun-Goes...

Thank you :)

Melinda Brasher | 81 comments I love this idea of helping each get our books perma free. If anyone can report my short story as free, I'd appreciate it.

Here's the Amazon link: http://www.amazon.com/Chaos-Rises-A-F...

Here's the B&N link where it's free:

P.G. Fogarty (pgfogarty) | 36 comments Hi everyone. I would love some help getting Amazon UK to price match my eBook to free. I have reported Jay and Melinda's.

http://www.amazon.co.uk/Nagamaru-The-...

Free on Smashwords here: https://www.smashwords.com/books/view...

Many Thanks!

message 13: by Jay (new)

Jay Howard (jay_howard) Done :)

message 14: by Melinda (new)

Melinda Brasher | 81 comments Thanks PG. I reported yours. I have heard, however, that Smashwords might not be mainstream enough for Amazon to care. In the US, they suggest you use B&N or Apple/Kobo. Does Smashwords distribute to an equivalent in the UK?

message 15: by P.G. (new)

P.G. Fogarty (pgfogarty) | 36 comments Thanks Jay. And thank you Melinda for the tip. I think Kobo is a recognised retailer in the UK, but I'm still waiting for them to add the eBook to their catalogue. I'll try reporting to Amazon with a Kobo link as soon as I get one, thanks :)

message 16: by Jay (new)

Jay Howard (jay_howard) Smashwords distribute to Apple, Sony, B&N, Kobo, Baker & Taylor, Diesel, Flipkart, Library Direct, Overdrive, Oyster, Page Foundry, Scribd, txtr, handling all the conversions and royalty payments for you. And all you have to do is upload a Word file.
Simples!

message 17: by Melinda (new)

Melinda Brasher | 81 comments I know that Smashwords distributes to all those markets, but does Amazon UK consider these to be competing markets? That's what I'm not sure about. For example, B&N seems to be an American thing, but I could be wrong. Are there separate Kobo and Apple sites for the UK or are they global?

message 18: by Jayne (new)

Jayne Blue (jayneblue) Done! If you could do the same for me, here's my amazon link and my B&N link.

message 19: by Jay (new)

Jay Howard (jay_howard) Just done it, Jayne.

I don't know how many it takes but it worked for the group charity anthology so fingers crossed!

message 20: by Timothy (last edited Jun 06, 2014 01:58PM) (new)

Timothy (meyertimothyj) Jayne, Melinda – I've also reported. Hope it helps!

Anybody maybe wanna help my book some? Would really appreciate it.

Thanks, folks! I'll hang around and help anybody that pops up.

message 21: by Jay (new)

Jay Howard (jay_howard) Did the 1st 2 - 3rd link wouldn't link, Timothy. Let us know if the giant moves faster with more than one free site reported.

message 22: by Timothy (new)

Timothy (meyertimothyj) Whoops. I fixed the third link, but the second still works for me. Thanks for spotting that, Jay, and I reported yours as well!

Good luck – it looks like you've been waiting a while.

message 23: by Judy (new)

Judy Goodwin | 33 comments Jay, do you have the link to your book on either Kobo or BN? I'd prefer one of those to report to Amazon; I've heard BN gets the fastest results.

I've got one to report as well: http://www.barnesandnoble.com/w/a-tro...

Timothy, good luck! I sent the email to Amazon.

Timothy (meyertimothyj) Sent yours along, Judy. Would you mind returning the favor? Good luck!

That was pretty painless. I reported it as seen on June 1, just in case they always add 15 days or something after the book is noted as free to finally price match. :-)

message 31: by Jay (new)

Jay Howard (jay_howard) Whoah, turn the voltage down, Phil! lol!

I can't believe they haven't price matched after all this time! My God, going on five months And still showing at $2.99 on Amazon? Well I added my voice to the chorus — hope it works for you, and quickly.

Maybe if it's up free on Barnes & Noble they will react?

message 33: by Judy (new)

Judy Goodwin | 33 comments I had an odd response when I sent Timothy's--they wrote back that only the email account associated with selling that book could notify them of the price match. Maybe it's where I sent it to? I went into the KDP area.

Now I'm wondering if that would work.

message 34: by Jay (new)

Jay Howard (jay_howard) Phil - give us the url where your book is free and the Amazon url so we can report cheaper for you too.

message 35: by Timothy (new)

Timothy (meyertimothyj) Hey Judy,

Yeah, that's odd – I usually just go onto the main seller page, under product details and submit the addresses there. I appreciate you sending it along, though!

message 36: by Philip (new)

Philip J McQuillan | 28 comments Hi Jay

my "overpriced" book on Amazon:
http://www.amazon.com/Grandfathers-Un...

the website to price match with is (I'll try Barnes & Noble): http://www.barnesandnoble.com/w/grand...

Here it is on Scribd:
http://www.scribd.com/book/228190606/...

and of course: https://www.smashwords.com/books/view...

message 37: by Jay (new)

Jay Howard (jay_howard) Just did it, Phil :)

You are a Princess! THANKS

I also sent Amazon and e-mail from the Kindle direct publishing site. I'm hoping they'll move swiftly… hehe, not likely

message 40: by Jay (new)

Jay Howard (jay_howard) We're at least trying to help each other; even if continental drift proves to be faster than the results we achieve, we should pat ourselves on the back for not just accepting something there's a possibility of us changing.

Philip J McQuillan | 28 comments I want to thank everyone here that helped me and chipped in to report Grandfather's Uncle for price matching by Amazon! I want to give special thanks to Jay for having the idea and starting this group in the first place!

I got lucky! Click the link and see for yourself — it's set as a free book already less than one week after the first one of you reported it.

Maybe now I can find the writers I am looking for to contribute a memoir/tribute Chapter of their own to the book project!

Hey, I really like that :) Will have to listen to more of her stuff.

And congrats on the price match - incredibly fast!

message 44: by Timothy (new)

Timothy (meyertimothyj) Hey folks!

I'm still having trouble getting my second book to go free on Amazon. Would you guys mind sending along a few links? I'd appreciate that.

Amazon: http://www.amazon.com/Galactic-Menace...

B&N: http://www.barnesandnoble.com/w/galac...
Smashwords: https://www.smashwords.com/books/view...
iBooks: https://itunes.apple.com/us/book/gala...

Thanks everybody!

message 45: by Melinda (new)

Melinda Brasher | 81 comments Timothy,

Mine won't go to free either! Very frustrating. I just reported yours.

Can you (and anyone else) report mine again? Mostly

Amazon: http://www.amazon.com/Chaos-Rises-Far...

ibooks: https://itunes.apple.com/us/book/chao...
Kobo: http://store.kobobooks.com/en-US/eboo...

I've reported or asked people to report on the free price on B&N, so maybe if people do it from ibooks and Kobo, it will help.

message 46: by Shannon (new)

Shannon Haddock I just reported yours, Melinda.

Could people be so kind as to do the same for me?

message 48: by Eeva (new)

Eeva Lancaster (eevalancaster) Do you think they'd care if it was free on Google Play?

message 49: by Celeste (new)

Celeste Hall (celestehall) | 3 comments LOVE this idea and could use some help myself. I went down the list and reported lower prices for the ones that weren't already marked down to Permafree (congrats!).

I would love if I could get a little help on this one. It's a super short story, so I've always felt bad about it not being free.

Here's the Amazon link: http://www.amazon.com/dp/B00M8PLGI0

Here's the B&N link: http://www.barnesandnoble.com/w/the-p...

Thank you for all! :)

Hana Goldberg | 4 comments LOVE this idea too...

I have a book set as free on Smashwords:

which I've told Amazon to price match and they just ignore. If you'd like to help me, please report it as free here:
