I like the author's writing style for many reasons. First, his style is very suspenseful and keeps the book interesting at all times. Second, in this book particularly there are many setting switches between Pat Tillman's life, the military, then Pat Tillman's life in the military and Krakauer finds a way to keep that from getting confusing. Also, if there is a bit of information that is not really common knowledge, then there is always a blurb at the bottom of the page explaining. There is an example of this on page 52 where he explains a good 40 yard dash time for college athletes and why Pat doesn't meet it yet. The main characters in this book are Pat Tillman, an NFL player who walks away from football after 9/11 to join the Army, Kevin Tillman (his brother), Marie Tillman (Pat's wife), and Mary Tillman (Pat and Kevin's mom). The only way I can relate to these characters are that my dad was in the Navy for 30 years and wasn't always home. The setting of this book changes constantly. It starts in New Almaden, California, where Pat and Kevin are raised. The book switches to the Middle East where terror is starting to take hold and eventually cause a war. The book comes back state-side to Tempe, Arizona where Tillman plays college football for Arizona State. After then being drafted by the Arizona Cardinals, the book shifts back to the Middle East when Tillman is deployed for Afghanistan. This is the setting through the majority of the book. The time period ranges from the 1980's all the way to the early 2000's. I highly recommend this book for anyone looking for a thought provoking book with lots of intrigue.
