Tessa In March 2013 Liam Cunningham (Davos in the tv serie) said that George told him WOW was halfway done.
& on the 11th of December a video was posted on youtube where Roy Dotrice (good friend of GRRM, voice in the audiobooks and he was originally cast as grand maester Pycelle) tells that George told him the book; 'is almost ready', so he could start recording for the audio books.

I say it will be released in 2014 and if not so, early 2015...

Gianluca Good news. Thanks for the info.

message 3: by Daniel (new)

Daniel If GRRM actually would get of his phat behind and finish the series it would make him as much money as he could ever spend. Well probably not that much, since he seems to be getting even phatter. But he MUST be the most slothful, arrogant writer ever to pick up a pencil. The movie and television projects are more important to him than those of us who have purchased his product and enjoyed it, well at least the first two books were enjoyable the body of work has been slipping ever since.
GET OF YOUR DEAD ZONE AND FINISH THIS SERIES PHATZO!

message 4: by Tessa (new) - added it

Tessa He already has more money then he can ever spend so that will be no motivation for him... I also want him to finish the series but you have to respect him in his working methods + he had those side projects with the first three books and it didn't stop him from releasing those in 2/3 years.

BTW: If you ask me Storm of Swords was the best book in the entire series, Feast for Crows... yeah, let not talk about that one but A Dance with Dragons was great, after SOS it's my favorite book, the only thing that's missing in DWD is a battle, it would have been perfect if he put either Meereen or Winterfell in it but other then that the book was brilliant.

message 5: by Daniel (new)

Daniel If you say so, SoS was okay but I though CoK and GoT were much better. It was like he was losing interest in the series so he was looking for a way out. Either way it has taken him longer to write it. We, his fans and readers are the ones he is punishing and he doesn't seem to care though we are who made him famous. Without the fans he would still be a mediocre hack. Yes it is a chicken and egg type of argument but face it, we have purchased a bit of loyalty from GRRM and he hasn't delivered.

Tessa To a certain point a agree with you but we didn't make him famous, he already was a great writer who was recognized for his work before GOT, he already made a nice living.
If you know anything about Martin then you know he doesn't really care about the money. He lives in a fairly modest home, doesn't wear expensive clothes or does crazy stuff with his money.
& If anyone made him famous, it was HBO. I'm assuming you are - just like me btw - a new reader, as in only started reading after HBO adapted it?

I do believe we earn loyalty from him but the last time I checked he was still working on WOW, I rather have it sooner then later but we can't really complain. It still hasn't been 6 years - thank god - and to be honest, I don't believe it will take him that long this time. The Meereenese knot is solved and as stated before some pretty reliable sources made announcements that make me believe WOW isn't that far away anymore.

SoS is seen by most as his best book in the series but it's a matter of taste so I can't force you to like it lol, CoK is 4th on my list, not because I didn't like it but because it didn't really made an mindblowing impression on me, which the others did do. FFC had the honor to impress me as one of the worst books I ever read so yeah lol

Daniel So my opinion doesn't count? I said what I thought, I don't bring in opinions from other people about what I like or what I think. I truly don't care whether everyone on the planet likes chocolate fudge on their raspberries. I like mine plain. I got sucked in to The Song of Ice and Fire when he wrote Game of Thrones, then I waited for three years, then he dained to write Clash Of Kings, then I waited three years, then he daned to write Storm of Swords, then I waited three years..... on and on but it has been a long time, and I purchased each of these tomes in hard back and I haven't bothered watching the HBO crap because I don't invest in HBO.
And ten years ago he promised he had the entire project finished just needed to do some minor editing. Then we had three more books, which this would be the third of and it isn't finished yet, he is milking it plain and simple.
I believe that is why Harriet Rigney didn't want GRRM to try and finish the WoT. We would still be waiting for the second chapter.
If it weren't for the attention from the readers do you actually think HBO would have even given him a second look?

message 8: by Tessa (new) - added it

Tessa Ofcourse your opinion counts, like I said it's a matter of taste and I apologize if it seemed that way, it wasn't my intention. & obviously I was wrong in assuming you were a new reader, it always seems like the new readers are the ones who complain the most about waiting this long while we haven't had to wait that long yet.

I like where he is going and I don't think he could have adapted all the things I love about asoiaf in just the 3 books he originally planned so I am glad it became bigger then he thought at the beginning.

& to your last question, yes I do think so, he wasn't mediocre to begin with. Even without the fans the writers of HBO should have seen the potential asoiaf had. All movies/tv series not based on a book begin without a fanbase.
If you have the right story, money and put it on the big screen right anything can become a big hit.

message 9: by Gal (new) - added it

Gal Cohen Money is always a motivation, especially when there's so much money involved. I don't believe GRRM is already above money, but even if he is as you say, he's not the only party involved. His publishers would like him to publish the next book before the next season of the TV series and I believe they are putting enough pressure on him as it is. They are business men, they know the meaning of the series catching up with them, and they won't let it happen. I just hope we won't get shitty books because of it.

message 10: by Britt (new) - added it

Britt To be fair he actually doesn't write the hbo show so that isn't distracting him. Well let me rephrase that he writes one episode per season and that is it. He said he really views them as 2 separate beasts so I don't think that is what is taking him so long. I have been invested in this since 2001 so I get the feelings but I think he is just writing us a really kick ass book. You can't knock a writers process. Think of how complex everything is and the attention to detail he infuses into every single character and story line. Shit takes time. He also has been quoted as saying that he had to map out the ending first then goes back in to fill in the rest so I'm sure it's a pretty intense process.

Each episode takes about a month of his time, and his visit to set each year takes about as long. Luckily he did neither for season 5. It'd be nice to think he's about halfway right now and will commit himself for the next 19 months so we could get it by late 2015.

But I think that is generous, simple as that. It's going to be a long wait, and even longer for the ADOS.

message 12: by Faye (new)

Faye meaning WOW will come us just before the next GOT season in HBO

message 13: by Dan (new)

Dan Tobias I would rather wait 2-3 years and get 3000 pages of Gold, i've read a million books and i can see, when books have be rushed, plz George take your time. Yes its a hell to Wait people!! but I chose quality vs Quantity. even if the wait time will drive me mad but there is alot of other books out there that needs to be read, and so little time.

message 14: by Jennifer (new)

Jennifer Could be worse....fantasticfiction.co.uk has the release date listed as 9999. I don't think any of us will be around by that date.

message 15: by Brooklyn (new) - added it

Brooklyn Ann People are forgetting that even after he finishes the book there will be at least another year before it releases. Aside from copyedits and pageproofs and the release of advance review copies, the publisher still needs time to hype it and let the pre-orders roll in.

So 2016 would be the earliest and that's assuming he finishes the first draft by the end of the year. And dang, I would REALLY love to see his publishing contract, lol.

And when did GR take down the cover?
Anyone know why? Is the publisher changing the cover?

message 16: by Tessa (new) - added it

Tessa @brooklyn; no that won't take a year, on the 3th of march 2011 he announced the release date of DWD, he said the book wasn't completely done yet but it would hit the shelfs on the 12th of July 2011, so it took a bit more then 4 months to complete the book and let the editors, publisher etc. to do their jobs.

message 17: by Brooklyn (new) - added it

Brooklyn Ann Oh, that's good to hear. I'd forgotten that the editors don't edit him anymore. :D So maybe mid-to late 2015 could happen. ::crosses fingers::

message 18: by Tessa (new) - added it

Tessa They do edit his books for as far as I know, not always enough if you ask me but who am I? LOL.

I believe Groel (is that her name?) said not so long ago she finished editing the parts he already handed over to her.

Brooklyn Ann Who are you? A delightful optimist who I hope is right. :)I think I would have loved an "edit as you go" process with the last editor I worked with, but not the one before that. If that happened with the previous editor my last book would have never been finished due to her changing her mind and wanting stuff changed according to whatever whim she had at the moment.

message 22: by Magnet (new) - added it

Magnet Homewood Goodness me, it's been 9 years since this thread started, and the book still is not out. I have to be honest, but I have a very vague memory of what happened in the previous books, so I guess I'll have to read them all again before I dig into this one.

message 23: by Harald (new)

Harald Considering that it was supposedly half finished in 2013, and it is, as of July 2023, supposedly 3/4 finished. it will be 2033 before it is fully finished. Not considering that he is actually slowing down, not speeding up.
I just know that I will not buy it, as this is the only form of protest open to me.
