I read World without end first, and now I am going to read Pillars of the Earth.
Will I be confused by the story lines since I'm going backwards? Or is it like reading 2 totally different books with different characters?

booth are great books, but the second maybe can have too much things in common with the first, so when I read it, the first one obiusly have more surprise from the others thing that I read before, a then when a read the second one a lot of that surprise in both narrative and surprise was a little bit gone. (Sorry for my writing and mistakes, english its not my first language)
The books seemed a bit alike, though might just have been the location and several of the main characters. I preferred Pillars because I liked the time period more.
Pillars of the Earth hands down. The story was so much more captivating and multidimensional. And the description of the architecture is just sublime!
World without end somehow didn't have the same impact for me. It seemed like it was too soapy. It didn't have the same depth as Pillars.

I like Pillars. Workd without End was toi similar. Authir constantly talking about the women character's breasts seemed odd and finally creepy.
I am just starting to read the 2nd book (World Without End) I have read the first book and really enjoyed it, although I did get bogged down some with all of the architecture information. I am looking forward this 2nd book and hope to exchange some thoughts.
This was the first book I've read by Follett.
I am also looking to grow my friends in Goodreads if anyone wants to be a friend.

Pillars. World Without End is still great but it felt like he was sticking to his winning formula for writing a good novel that I already experienced. Also, the character's stories in Pillars were so magically entwined together, I couldn't get over how good it was.
I love the pillars of the earth but not the sequel, blurb implied, something was going to happen but not a huge amount. I was extremely frustrated by the end of the book.
First two novels keep one awake and amazed.
Both novels are page turners.
Could be wrong but I do not think that A Column of Fire was written by Ken Follett.
In his two previous historic novels, everything makes sense, the author' each single sentence is perfect.
In this novel, the words seem rusty and the stories are a bit incoherent. Maybe Follett was out of ideas or maybe his editor used a bad ghost writer...

Pillars of the Earth is the best book of the series.
The characters have deep personalities, the story takes one awake and wanting to read more. Each chapter runs smoothly with the next. This novel is a masterpiece.
World Without End is very good too.
Am reading A Column of Fire and I must say I am disappointed by the story, the characters and the style.

I LOVED Pillars and then when Inread World was so so disappointed.
I loved them both. I can't go into a church or cathedral anymore and not look at it in wonder vis a vis the time it was built.
Joyce, it is really two different books, as Diane says the connection is the village and cathedral.
It really is two separate books, the main thing that connects them is the village and cathedral. I liked both but thought that World was a bit soapier.
Actually, since you already read World Without End, if I were you I'd just treat Pillars as if it were a prequel. The sequel takes place some 200 years after the first, so it would be like reading the origins to what you've already read. They're both great reads:)
