Adam Bede
question
Who is responsible for Hetty's tragedy ?

I think Hetty herself is responsible for her tragedy as she goes long with her desires to be an accomplished lady.

I think it's the dude who got her pregnant. He was a man of the world and he knew from the start that he wasn't going to marry her. He also knew the risk they were taking, and that he would leave her hanging, but let her think he would marry her and turn her into a lady. At best he was a lovestruck idiot, who should have stayed away, at worst he was a selfish a- hole.
Hello, I think it's few people actually, Hetty, she was self-absorbed, saw herself already as a lady, her aunt, as a woman and mother, she could see some changes in her, psychological and physical (when she was pregnant), Arthur who got her pregnant, he should know better! But I loved the scene in Dairy between Hetty and Arthur, it was very sensual, beautifully written:)
