Daisy Chain Audiobook Challenge

1 February - 30 April 2014


Have you ever noticed how often something in a book you're reading or listening to will give you ideas for what to read next? Well, this challenge will give you a chance to take advantage of that! It's all about linking from one audiobook to the next. You can use the following attributes to link your books:

* Word in the title, including the word's contraction or extension. Eg Time, timing, times

* Word in the series title, including the word's contraction or extension. Eg Love, loving, loves

* Same number in a series

* Author name (first or last)

* Pseudonym of the author - you can tie books by the same author but written under a different name.

* Narrator

* Main character's name

* Main character's occupation

* Audiobook publisher (eg Brilliance Audio)

* Audiobook length (listening times in multiples of 2 hours, eg 8-10, 10-12, 12-14 hours)

* Color of the audiobook cover

Any of the words in the title, series title, author's name or pseudonym, character's name or occupation, or narrator's name can link to any of the other word attributes.

by Susan Elizabeth Phillips. (A word in the series title is linking to a word in the book title.)

Rules

* Where the character's name or occupation is used, they MUST be one of the main characters. Secondary characters will not count. However the links can be fairly broad, eg Army sniper can be matched to a police sniper, or "military" can be used to link any members of the armed forces.

* Names must sound the same if they are not spelled the same (eg Gin from the Elemental Assassin series by Jennifer Estep; Jin from the Change of Heart series by Mary Calmes)

* Initials can be used as links and are interchangeable with names (eg JR Ward can be linked to JD Robb, LA Gilbert can be linked with Elle Kennedy), however an initial cannot be linked to a name that starts with that letter unless the name is pronounced the same as the letter (the letter J could link to the name Jay, but not to James).

* No minimum length

* Rereads allowed

* 'a', 'an', 'the, 'on', 'in' all count as linking words

* Feel free to either repost or update your original post with your progress, but PLEASE DO A FINAL REPOST when you complete the challenge.


If you hit a wall and can't link further, break your challenge down into a smaller chain, and start again :) (eg make a key chain and a bracelet.)

If you are still stuck, call them Scattered Daisies and see if you can piece them together out of order!

It is actually pretty hard to link them - surprisingly so! unless you do go with the same author/narrator etc. I like variety, so I have to really work my order of reading for this challenge. I haven't planned past book 3 though ;0

As much as it would help me link my books that aren't cooperating, I think linking by country would make it too easy since the vast majority would be set in either the US or Great Britain. It kind of takes all of the challenge out of it when, using myself as an example, the next 7-8 books I'm planning on listening to are all set in the same country...

If anyone has any other ideas on ways to link books, I'd be happy to consider them - no promises, but as long as it doesn't make things TOO easy, I'm open to suggestions!

Yes, that works for me...seems like in a lot of the historicals I've read the governess at the very least oversees the education of her charges (whether or not she does the actual teaching), especially the younger ones.

You should consider adding a major Event as a link: like a wedding, child birth, death etc
That would give us a plot link.

LOL! Yes, Ezin, that would be fun, as she's one of my favorite narrators.

I actually lucked with out my chain and have my next few mapped out - Overdrive is really good if you want to link authors/narrators - I was able to narrow down the narrator options for my book 3 book (Dick Hill) to romance books that he has done and came up with a Nora Roberts book...its smooth sailing from there

Ok, for someone who is looking for a new book, I seem to have found a new series and author that I have not heard of before. I was listening to this and it really made me laugh out loud.

I don't usually recommend books (especially since I'm not done with it yet), but thought some of you might be looking for inspiration.

Who is the narrator?

Johanna Parker is the narrator and she makes the jokes in the book very funny.

I have just finished The Girl Who Kicked the Hornet's Nest - I LOVED this book. I LOVE the narration by Saul Reichlin - it flows with wonderful characterisation and the most melodic voice I have heard, and pronouncing Swedish locations with ease. (My guess is that he is Swedish. ;)

I have just found out he is British. He clearly did detailed language observations to prepare for this role. He doesn't miss a beat.
