Rachel (rachelkisley) I'm really, REALLY not enjoying the book I am reading at the moment. But I feel like I HAVE to keep going with it. Is anyone else the same as me and puts themselves through reading an awful book just because they don't want to "give up" on it?

Jayme(theghostreader) (jaymetheghostreader) It depends on the book. I do give up on some of them if they just aren't going anywhere.

Misha (itz_mie) however bad a book I'm reading is, I never give up on it midway... I always try & finish the book... there's always a slight hope the story may get better... but by the end of the day, I don't regret wasting my time over that book either... such books make u realize the value of other timeless classics

Rachel (rachelkisley) Yes I feel like I should carry on just in case it gets better, but you're right, it will make me appreciate the "good books" even more. I think I may take a short break from this book and then come back to it to finish it off.

Viola | 1014 comments I've learned that life is too short to spend on bad books. Generally I try to be patient. If there is something redeeming about the book, I'll push through boring/bad parts. But if there is really nothing going for it, then I will abandon a book.

Julia I'm with Viola, with the caveat that when I abandon a book I usually note if I'm giving up because I came to it at the wrong time (it happens) or because the writing is awful. I often re-visit the abandoned books a year or two later to see if I am "ready" for them. *shrugs* It works for me :-)

Rachel (rachelkisley) I like that - "Life is too short for a bad book"

I will finish books I hate if I am reading them for a discussion (such as a group read in this group), just because I enjoy seeing what others didn't see about a book, and I can't do that as easily if I don't finish it.

If there is something I have picked up on my own that I detest though, or just can't get into, I will abandon it, as I have too many other books that I want to read.

message 9: by Leady (new)

Leady I hate to give up a book! Generally I finish it also if I don't like it, because I think it's not right to judge a book without read it all, and because also if it's bad written, I want to know how it's finish.

There are only four books I never finish, The Gulag Archipelago: 1918-1956 (I started it for school at 13 years old, really too early!), Le Capitaine Fracasse (extremely boring and static), The Voyage of the Dawn Treader (I don't like very much The Chronicles of Narnia books, and read it all in file it's not an help to finish them) and Jonathan Strange & Mr Norrell, this last I don't know why I don't succeed in finish it, I try two time but maybe I was frightened by the length of this boring book.

Dee | 83 comments I have tried three times to read Moby Dick and The Lord of the Rings but its just not happening. Would love to read them but sometimes its just not meant to be!

Sharon A. (sharona826) | 172 comments I absolutely will give up a book I can't get into. I will give it 50 or 100 pages; if I am reading just to be reading, I move on. My philosophy is there are just too many good books out there to waste any of my time on one I'm not enjoying. And after all, I read for enjoyment.

I have found that especially in the e-book world, there are a lot of poorly written books out there that would never have seen the light of day at a publishing house.

I find that the older I get, the less time I take on a book I'm not enjoying . As some of the previous people have said , life is too short to force myself to read something I really don't like. There are tons of other books waiting in line for me, so I just move on to the next . ( I've got a truckload on my Kindle ) .
