This book got great ratings on Goodreads and got 4 stars in Bookmarks in Nov/Dec 2004 (although I wasn't getting the magazine then). I picked it for our book group for July and am about 1/2 through. For those who haven't read it, it is an amazing writing accomplishment. For the first half of the book, the chapters skip forward through time, with different characters and stories, but there is something in each part that links it to the past chapter. At the halfway point, it goes back in time, revisiting the same people and further explaining their connection. Amazing writing! The different voices/POV are incredible and sometimes challenging to read (I'm reading a section now that is written mostly in pigeon English) and a bit time consuming, but so well done I can't wait to see how it all weaves together.

Teresa This book is very different than most other novels I have read lately. It is action packed, character driven and science fiction. What the author does brilliantly is pick up a particular theme from each character's story and subtly drop them into another character's storyline. The intersection of the plots is compelling. Also, the author is very imaginative in his world and plot building and the reader cares about the main characters easily. I laughed out loud in some sections and raced through others to see what was going to happen next. The hallmark of an entertaining book for me is how much I think about it afterwards and whether or not I would be willing to read it again. This book satisfies both these measures for me. It was very interesting to see how the film version matched what I had envisioned while reading this novel. Tom Hanks was miscast!
