It's time to submit your nominations for our open pick book for September. Nominations will stay open for approximately one week, after which the poll with go up.

The usual rules: one nomination per person, a work of fiction published in the 21st century, books that are overly genre or fail to meet the group standards of literary quality may be disqualified.

And don't forget our current discussions, The World's Smallest Bible, A Reunion Of Ghosts, and just opened In the Night Garden; as well as our upcoming August books, The Yacoubian Building and My Brilliant Friend.

Blatant self-promotion from a publisher deleted.

message 3: by Ben (new)

Ben | 54 comments The Way Back to Florence by Glenn Haybittle. Had a great review from Alex Preston which unfortunately I can't find online. And the kindle version is cheap - £2.28.

I'll nominate All the Birds, Singing.

message 5: by Ben (new)

Ben | 54 comments Good choice, Caroline. I'll happily read that too.

message 6: by Ben (new)

Ben | 54 comments I reckon it's about time we read another Brit! Last one was David Mitchell I think.

Ben, how'd you come across that title? I've got a few friends who are self-publishing and I'm curious how less well-known authors/publishers get the word out (assuming you don't know the author personally). Looks like it's gotten good reviews so far!

I'm gonna nominate "S" by J.J. Abrams & Doug Dorst.

Please excuse its size :-)

The Kindle edition is $2.99 in the US. Sounds interesting! I also have A Little Life in my TBR pile. But, since I'll be traveling the first 2 weeks of September, I'll be inclined to vote for something I have on Kindle!

Teal (tealismyname) | 5 comments Sorry if I've done this all wrong, but I'm rather new and don't know what I'm doing :) (don't know how to link on mobile)

I'm going to nominate 'Cutting for Stone' by Abraham Verghese (sorry if that's been read before!)

Cheers!
Teal

Deborah | 983 comments You did it perfectly.
When commenting, above the square outline, right of center there is the option to add book/author. Like this:
Cutting for Stone by Abraham Verghese.

I'm not sure if you can link on mobile - at least my version doesn't appear to let me. It's not the end of the world though!

To check what we've previously read, you can visit the group's bookshelf (though not sure that option appears in mobile version either), or the Previously Discussed Books thread in the Welcome category (though it might not be fully up to date).

Teal (tealismyname) | 5 comments Ah thanks! Will do :) and in the future I'll stick to my computer for recommending

Deborah | 983 comments Yeah, the app is um... not as good as the full site :)

message 15: by Peter (new)

Peter Aronson (peteraronson) | 516 comments I would like to nominate The Song of Achilles by Madeline Miller.

Nominations closing soon.

message 17: by Lily (new)

Lily (joy1) | 2506 comments Okay, since Portia hasn't (see another thread) yet and since my f2f club already has this slated for September, I'll be the one to nominate Go Set a Watchman by Harper Lee. Not really because I'm excited about reading it, but because sometimes it's fun to be around the fuss about a provocative publication.

Go Set a Watchman by Harper Lee

Okay, thanks to all the nominators. The nominations are closed and the poll is open, here or from the homepage. Poll will be open until the end of the month. The usual rules apply, don't vote for a book if you are not fully committed to reading it and discussing it.

Good job, Lily! I'm off to vote for it.

Our moderator pick for September will be Middlesex by Jeffrey Eugenides.

And the winner of the open pick, after a tight race, is The Song of Achilles.

message 22: by LindaJ^ (new)

LindaJ^ (lindajs) | 2548 comments When I realized A Little Life was unlikely to win for September, I decided to start reading it. I'm about 1/4 through and if it remains as good, it will be the best book I've read in at least two years!

Sounds like another nomination might be in order.

Looking forward to it. I really enjoyed The Virgin Suicides
