I'm now reading "Rendezvous With Rama" by Arthur C. Clarke, and listening to "Hercule Poirot's Christmas."

I notice that this month's reading challenge is a romance...will try to read one of those this month, too.

I am also reading A Rule Against Murder by Louise Penny as well as The Tenth of December by George Saunders.

I've had a really bad case of the flu, so I wanted to do some "comfort" reading - like comfort food - a known quantity, something I could just slip into. I picked up Blue Heaven by C.J. Box. I assumed it was the next book in the Joe Pickett series, but it's separate story. And that's just fine. Interesting story - I really can't quite figure out where it's going, who's going to be the good guy, how it's all going to go down, how the bad guys are going to be foiled. Like I said, comfort reading...

I'm currently reading The Dead in their Vaulted Arches by Alan Bradley, the most recent in the Flavia DeLuce series. This one finds Flavia and her family grieving once more, as her mother, lost on a Tibetan glacier a decade earlier, has finally come home. 6 books in this is still one of the most original and unusal mystery series out there.

I just picked up Independent Study by Joelle Charbonneau. It's the second book in her Testing Trilogy. I just started it but I really loved the first book. It's a YA post-apocalyptic/dystopian type book. It reminds me a bit of The Hunger Games meets The Giver.

Daughter introduced me to the Iron Druid series by Kevin Hearne, and I'm beginning the 4th title now, "Tricked". It's like Percy Jackson for adults, and I'm having fun with it.

I am just finished Queen of the Tearling and trying to cleanse the palette. Not up to my liking. I started the the Mirk and Midnight :)

Having finished up "The Mote in God's Eye," I'm now well into "Rendezvous With Rama," by Arthur C. Clarke.

I'm also reading the teen novel "Charm and Strange," by first novelist Stephanie Kuehn. I saw an ad or advance review for the book recently--now I can't remember where--and the story line piqued my interest. I'm only a few chapters into it, but it's compulsively readable. More details to follow once I finish the book.

Well, besides the Romance novel challenge, I have read several books on healthier eating, including Eating on the Wild Side: The Missing Link to Optimum Health, which I highly recommend. I have also started the Inheritance Cycle Series. I know, I know, Christopher Paolini, the author everyone loves to hate. But so far I like it. Yes, it was written by a 15 year old and the dialogues feels like it. But, he does an incredible job of scenery narration, probably comes from growing up in Montana. Western U.S. writers seem to have an inbred knack for it. I also read Elegy Beach, the sequel to Ariel(another book written by a teen prodigy).

I finished Divergent a few days ago, wanting to read the book before seeing the movie. I've read a lot of YA ("Young Adult," or "teen") stuff that I liked - Push, Forgive Me Leonard Peacok, The Hunger Games Trilogy immediately come to mind - but this was really disappointing. I didn't like it at all. I'm now reading Carl Sagan's Contact on a friend's recommendation. About 100 pages into it - I'm surprised how well it's written. Apparently, it started life as a screenplay that Sagan co-authored with Francis Ford Coppola. When the development of the screenplay stalled, Sagan went ahead and turned it into a novel. With the novel's success, the screenplay was revived and ultimately became the movie starring Jodie Foster. My friend who told me to read the book says the ending is quite a bit different from the movie, but it's been years since I've seen it. About all I that I remember is that I really liked the film. And so far, I'm liking the book quite a lot as well.

Finished Carl Sagan's Contact - surprisingly good. Starting on Carson McCuller's The Heart is a Lonely Hunter. My wife's book club is reading this, and I thought I'd read along.

Here are two anthologies that you may like- The Dragon Done It and Down These Strange Streets. While not all the stories are great they may introduce you to a few new authors.

In the past week I've finished up "Kitty and the Silver Bullet," (for the romance reading challenge), "Rendezvous with Rama," (book club), and "The Initiate." Now starting: "Forever War," by Joe Haldeman for next month's book club discussion and "The Outcast," by Louise Cooper, just for fun. I haven't decided which audiobook to start next.
