Joel (deliriumtrigger) | 312 comments Hi guys - that time again. We had a highly popular book in July, yet a VERY anemic discussion. Let's turn that back around in August, and get things back to normal.

As always, rules are as follows:

1) Each person is allowed ONE vote, either a nomination OR a "second"

2) Once a book is "seconded", it is added to the poll list

3) Once five books are on the poll list, this thread closes and voting begins

4) No self promotion allowed - if outside vote stacking or promotion is discovered, a book will be DQ'd automatically.

Thanks everyone!

Joel (deliriumtrigger) | 312 comments I'll continue with the theme of trying to get cheaper, more established books for folks, and nominate:

Nine Princes In Amber by Roger Zelazny.

message 3: by Scott (new)

Scott (greenteasamurai) Too soon for Queen of Fire by Anthony Ryan?

message 4: by Alex (new)

Alex (vaeh) Deadhouse Gates by Steven Erikson.

It'd be a shame if this group never progressed beyond GotM, especially because starting at DH the series really takes off and straightens out some of the wrinkles present in GotM.

message 5: by Mark (new)

Mark Lawrence (marklawrence) | 34 comments Second 9 Princes in Amber. Booyah.

message 6: by Lisa (new)

Lisa (waytoofantasy) | 19 comments Sunshine by Robin McKinley. Because it gives me an excuse to reread it.

message 7: by Matt (new)

Matt Hageman Furies of Calderon by Jim Butcher

message 8: by C.E. (new)

C.E. Martin (cemartin2) | 2 comments Something in the Xanth series?

message 9: by Andrew (new)

Andrew Obrigewitsch (andrewobrige) Since we are nominating classics, I'm gong to nominate The Broken Sword by Poul Anderson.

https://www.goodreads.com/book/show/7...

I would have seconded 9 Princes in Amber, but Mark beat me too it. That's a great classic too. And so is The Black Company. But I liked the Broken Sword best of the 3 and it was published the same year as The Two Towers. So it's impossible for it to be derivative of Tolkien.

message 10: by Jon (new)

Jon I also like the choice for Nine Princes in Amber. Since that was already seconded, I'll nominate Monster Hunter International by Larry Correia.

Politics aside, I've heard it's a really interesting read and I've had it sitting in my TBR pile.

message 11: by Michael (new)

Michael (rabidnewz) I nominate The Magicians by Lev Grossman.

message 12: by Alissa (new)

Alissa | 37 comments I nominate one of my favorites ever, To Ride Hell’s Chasm, epic fantasy, standalone, two male leads facing a mysterious disappearance, a varied cast of characters where everyone counts, culture clashes and great worldbuilding. Would love to reread it!

message 13: by Matthew (new)

Matthew The Magicians has my vote. Though I'll be torn between that and 9 Princes when voting commences.

Denisa | 3 comments What do you all think about Malice ?

message 19: by Dan (new)

Dan (morpethman) How about Temeraire by Naomi Norvik? Not sure it's been discussed here before

Am I allowed to second as well? If so then I'll second Under Heaven

message 20: by Antonis (new)

Antonis (antonakis) | 9 comments Vaeh wrote: "Deadhouse Gates by Steven Erikson.

I strongly second Deadhouse gates! I really liked the first one and I think it's about time we read the next part of the story!

message 21: by Lulu (new)

Lulu (robotwitch) | 16 comments I'll second To Ride Hell's Chasm.

message 22: by Devan (new)

You missed To Ride Hell's Chasm that was seconded by Mark before your post.

Oh damn, I completely missed that second as well!

In which case, I'd like to change to seconding Under Heaven, since Dan's possibly doesn't count due to him nominating too, but I'd love to see it on the polls.

message 25: by Tim (new)

Tim Elantris, by Brandon Sanderson

Man I love this one.

message 26: by Justin (new)

Justin How about The Black Prism by Brent Weeks?

message 27: by rozzzly (new)

rozzzly | 2 comments 9 princes looks good to me :) it's got my vote

message 28: by Josh (new)

Josh Reaves | 11 comments I'll second the Black Prism

message 29: by Joel (new)

Joel (deliriumtrigger) | 312 comments Not counting rescinded/changed votes, here's what we're gonna roll with:

The Magicians by Lev Grossman
Nine Princes In Amber by Roger Zelazny
To Ride Hell's Chasm by Janny Wurts
Monster Hunter International by Larry Correia
Deadhouse Gates by Steven Erickson.
The Black Prism by Brent Weeks
Under Heaven by Guy Gavriel Kay

Closing thread and going to poll. I normally limit to 5 but I was slow to respond and those are two fantastic books at the end that were seconded.
