I believe Alastair Reynolds is a big name in the space opera category. I have his "Revelation Space" waiting for me on my book shelf.
Currently I am reading the Void trilogy by Peter F. Hamilton, which most certainly is space opera in its modern sense.

I am reading Blue Remembered Earth and I quite like his style.

I think Vorkosigan is at the high drama end of space opera, with Jack Campbell's Lost Fleet series at the low drama end(less drama more science). Empire of Man by David Weber and John Ringo fits somewhere in the middle.
Does that about sum up space opera?

Currently reading The Lost Fleet series by Jack Campbell with Leviathan Wakes sitting in my 'to read' list.

If you like space opera, I've written a series titles Deep Space Endeavor. It's an e-series on amazon. It lends more to action than drama as I was aiming for a straight up old school type adventure. A series where you know the good guys are good and the bad guys are bad. Hit me up if you want to know more or just check out the free sample on amazon.

My reading interests lately have been the under five dollar sci-fi books through Amazon. I like Laurence Dahners, Thomas Deprima, Richard Phillips, Ken Jeanis, and Michael Hicks to name a few.

As to Star Trek vs Star Wars, I would have to give it to Star Trek (original) over Star Wars (4-6) and Star Wars (1-3) over Star Trek (TNG). IMHO.
