Suzanne | 1582 comments Please keep all discussion to the events and speculation from Part I

No spoiler tags required. Though it would be highly appreciated if you Uncheck Add to my Update Feed to avoid accidentally spoiling this for your good read friends.

Please do not discuss events from later chapters. Referring back to events from a previous section/book is fine.

Suzanne | 1582 comments I like how things have started off. It looks as if we have a couple new point of view characters, which is not my favorite thing to do, but could be ok. Some things I've enjoyed so far:
1. The opening scene with Yarvi. He's a clever one.
2. Skara's escape and Blue Jenner's character - he surprised me.
3. Thorns interaction with Skara when they first meet. Thorn knew just what to say.

I don't really remember Koll from previous books, but it seems like I should.

Amak888 | 8 comments Koll is Ankram's son from the first book. He and his mother Safrit are on the journey to the Empire of the South in Half the World, and he carves the story of that voyage onto the South Wind's mast.

Suzanne | 1582 comments Oh thanks so much - that totally brings it back! Now I remember him!

Sky | 1291 comments Oh yeah!

Thanks - I had the first book in ebook I can search, but book 2 I won the goodreads giveaway so I can't search for names :)

Thanks!

Sky | 1291 comments Finished the first section - I like new new POV of Skara, Wraith, and Koll (spell? I am using audio) - Wraith seems like an interesting fellow...The dynamic between Blue Jenner, Skara, and Wraith was pretty hilarious. Glad we finally got some fighting action at the end of the section!

Nguyễn Hồng Hải | 16 comments The thing that irks me most is why does Safrit (Koll's mother) just drop dead for no reason after 2 books?

I can't remember why she does. If anyone knows the answer to this, please post! I lent the second book to my husband to read while he's out of town this week, so I have to wait til he gets back to look this one up!

I really like the juxtaposition between Thorn's aggressive side and her occasional soft side. I think she'll be a good mentor to Skara in many ways. I bet we will see quite a few scenes with interactions between them in future chapters.

Christina Pilkington | 126 comments I'm enjoying this so far, but still prefer the second book over this one. Hopefully my opinion will change soon! Maybe it's because, once again, we are introduced to several new POVs, and that's always slows down my reading in the beginning. I'm fine with the new characters, although Raith really irks me. I just need some time to get to know them!

What I'm really waiting for is to finally learn more back story about the "elves" that used to live in this world. That's what I'm interested in the most!

Suzanne | 1582 comments I'm interested in the back story too. I hope we learn more about it!

message 12: by Meera (new)

Meera I started this couple of days ago and while it's moving along, I'm disappointed by all the new characters added on. I was hoping that the last book would bring back Yarvi as the main POV.

Scott (thekeeblertree) | 1049 comments I was hoping for Yarvi as a POV as well but I do enjoy getting to see him from the view of others around him.

And I don't remember Koll's mother's death but they did mention it's been two years so a lot can happen. Wonder if that will be explained later.

Usually lots of new POVs bug me but I'm pretty ok with it right now. All three are entertaining in their own way: Skara is smart and has revenge on her mind, Koll is on his way to becoming Yarvi jr, and Raith is a complete psycho (almost the male version of Thorn).

Great ending to this section, there aren't many writers out there who write battle scenes better than Abercrombie. Forgot that Uthil was a sword master

I would have liked Yarvi or Thorn as a POV, but I enjoyed the new ones.

message 15: by Bill (new)

Bill | 1596 comments Way late to the party. I am really enjoying the new povs. I like how each book has new povs but the old povs still remain in the story. I don't think I have read another series that has done that.

There were some great lines and conversations in this section that made me laugh. Raith's odd fighting style also made me chuckle.

Yeah. I can't really think of love that does that either Bill.

Grrm could benefit from this idea.. Hell probably just kill of his POVs instead.
