Flights of Fantasy discussion

I'm really looking forward to seeing what people think of this book. I've said before that I thought it was really fun and silly and enjoyed it a lot more than I thought I would. I listened to it on audio, Luke Daniels is the narrator and I really enjoy him. He did the Iron Druid series as well.

I'm about 37% in. It's an interesting story, and pretty fun so far, though Martin is kind of annoyingly thick. Hoping he learns some things along the way.

So, I finished this last night. It was ok... I give it 2.5 stars, which is middle-of-the-road.

It was an interesting idea, and it was cute at first, but the training seemed to take forever and I started to be bored before we finally got to something resembling a plot, which was roughly 70% in... and then the plot was kinda hokey, I thought.

Not a bad book, fun enough in it's own way. Gwen was an okay character, though I'm not sure I like the whole (view spoiler)[conceit of having all the women go to Atlantis as a convenient way to explain not having a lot of relevant female characters. I mean, if they can change reality to such a large extent, couldn't they maybe try to make it not entirely sexist?

Also, the fact that her main inclusion was so that every guy could hit on her, and the inexplicable "yeah, you can kiss me" thing with Martin at the end seemed out of character and came out of nowhere. I'm glad she ended up accidentally magicking him away instead. (hide spoiler)]

Anyway -

Not a bad story, but I was a bit meh by the end. (I found myself thinking "this is why they do training montages in films... I shall never underestimate the power of a good montage again.")

Colleen - regarding your spoiler... (view spoiler)[I agree about the lack of female characters in this book. However, if you did decide to continue the series, the second book deals quite a bit more with Atlantis, and therefore has a lot more female characters. It's also a little better paced than this one. No training to cover, so it's mostly just story. LOT's of wonkey time travel stuff though, so if that bothered you at all, run! LOL. (hide spoiler)]

Anyway, I'm glad you at least didn't hate it! Haha :)

I liked the book, I'm just not sure I have much to say about it. The concept was fun, but, as Colleen said, the pacing was pretty slow. Also, there was nothing in the way of a real plot twist. At least, I wasn't surprised by any of the developments.

Still, it was something I enjoyed reading enough that I plan to read the next book at some point.
