This is the thread for Chapter 4 of Seveneves. I hope you're all enjoying it so far, let us know all your thoughts :) (but no spoilers for later parts of the book please!)

Who do you like?
Is the story how you imagined?

Tiffany (lexiophile) | 12 comments I'm about halfway through this section. I get that this is a sci-fi book so there's bound to be a lot of scientific explanation for everything and I love that but with everything that is happening I just feel like the emotional element gets lost. I mean it's the end of the world and I feel like these characters just don't care. anybody else feel this way?

I think you're right. Everybody is really calm at the prospect. It's hard to imagine an event that big. The moon blew up but since it's going to be a "slow death" it's hard to feel urgent. Two years is quick on some scales but for our day to day lives, things wouldn't change rapidly.

I definitely agree. I was thinking the exact same thing that all of the characters are really 'fine' with the fact that the Moon has exploded and Earth is likely headed for sudden death sometime in the next few years... I doubt I would be calm! I doubt anyone would be!

I can understand those in Space feeling fairly calm as they're already up there and 'safe' but even they have all these struggles of what to do... It just all seems a little unbelievable about just how chilled everyone is...

The science stuff is fine with me so far, there are some moments I have to slow my reading to make sure I'm really taking it all in, but on the whole it's a pretty interesting situation with a lot of technical stuff going on which feels believable (apart from the emotionless people doing everything).
