The writing is amazing, so maybe it was worth it.

Patty, did you see the Publisher's Weekly interview with Yanagihara? She said in her earlier drafts the protagonist was even more of a monster...she was able to humanize him over the years as she matured as a writer and developed a fuller understanding of him as a character. Yes, absolutely! And re the colonialism/science themes, the book I kept thinking of as I read People was The Immortal Life of Henrietta Lacks -- the scientists' chilling lack of empathy toward their subjects.
