***ANY EUROPEAN COUNTRY, AFTER 1485 A.D.***

Okay everyone, it's that time of the month - time to nominate! Anyone who would like to nominate one book may do so in this thread.

Since I'm getting this thread up so late, I'm shifting the reads to start on the 1st of the month as opposed to the 15th so people have more time to get whatever book is picked.

The theme this month is EUROPEAN ROYALTY - POST PLANTAGENETS (any European country, after 1485 A.D.). We've had a lot of Plantagenet books lately (3 out of the last 4), so it seems like a good time for some other options!

Since this group has read SO MANY books together, I'm only going to exclude the last two years of books that this group has read from being nominated (so books we read together more than two years ago are now okay). A list of every book this group has read together in the last two years is at the end of this post (alphabetically by author, then by title if we've read more than one book by that author), so please try not to nominate a book from this list.

Please try to check amazon or some other site to make sure the book is easily available - the last thing we want is to nominate some great book that no one can get! If you nominate more than one book, only the first book listed will make it into the voting poll (so save additional books for the next months!). Also, if the book doesn't fit the theme, I won't add it to this month's voting poll, but I will carry it over to the next theme that it does fit under if you would like.

Feel free to nominate one book of your choice in this thread until I close the thread (scheduled to close February 25th, 9pm Eastern).

At around that time, I'll make a voting poll and list all the nominated books in it, and people can vote in the poll until the poll closes (set to last through March 1st). Discussion will start on April 1st.

Happy Nominating!

BOOKS WE HAVE READ AS A GROUP IN THE LAST TWO YEARS (PLEASE DON'T NOMINATE):

Shadow on the Crown by Patricia Bracewell

Born to Rule: Five Reigning Consorts, Granddaughters of Queen Victoria by Julia P. Gelardi

The Lady Queen: The Notorious Reign of Joanna I, Queen of Naples, Jerusalem, and Sicily by Nancy Goldstone

The Forever Queen by Helen Hollick

The Plantagenets: The Warrior Kings and Queens Who Made England by Dan Jones

Bring Up the Bodies by Hilary Mantel

The Second Empress: A Novel of Napoleon’s Court by Michelle Moran

Lionheart by Sharon Kay Penman

When Christ and His Saints Slept by Sharon Kay Penman

The Last Days of the Romanovs: Tragedy at Ekaterinburg by Helen Rappaport

Royal Mistress by Anne Easter Smith

The Winter Palace: A Novel of Catherine the Great by Eva Stachniak

The Wars of the Roses by Alison Weir

Sabrina, this book sounds great, but it *may* be a tad difficult to get a hold of unfortunately. I checked Amazon US, Barnes and Noble, Half.com and eBay, and for the most part there are only a few copies available at around $90+. I did find it on Amazon UK for around 11 pounds, but it seems like shipping to the U.S. would add another 7 pounds, so the total would still be around $30. The New York Public Library didn't seem to have it either (not saying that other libraries wouldn't have it, but the NYPL does have a ton of books).

Do you happen to know of another place where people could get the book if it was selected (I'm certainly not claiming that I checked every possible site)? It's kind of surprising that it's so difficult to find since it's a relatively new book, but I'm not having much luck and I'm afraid others may not either.

Sabrina | 54 comments My fault I should have checked first. I see now you asked us to check the availability before nominating - Sorry!

And you are correct, my library doesn't even have this book and the statewide search pulled up nothing. . .how sad!

I think I read on her blog that she's got a contract with a publisher now and will be rereleased soon. I'll see if I can hunt down the particulars.

No problem! I think that book has been nominated in the past (and probably not that long ago) and there were plenty of copies at the time, so availability may change quickly.

Thanks Misfit!

Sabrina, it looks like it's coming out in June as Queen of Bedlam. Do you want to save this nomination until then and pick a different book for this round?

Thanks Misfit! I'm doing a happy dance again :-)

Sara, I will definitely keep this book in mind for a summer pick.
