Kristina Simon (kristinasimon) | 11204 comments 30.6 - Sandy/Kristi's task: Oh, the Places You'll Go
Read one book for A and one book for B.
Book A: Read a book by an author whose first, middle, or last name is the same as a place name. Ex: Justina Ireland, Julia London, Austin Grossman

Book B: Read a book set primarily in the place identified by the author's name of book A.

Your book's setting may not extend geographically beyond the location in the author's name.
An author named Brooklyn needs a book set in Brooklyn. An author named York could be paired with a book in Brooklyn, NY or a book set in New York state or York, England

Here are a few examples:
If the author's name is a country the book B setting must take place within that named country.
Book A: The City and the City by China Miéville
Book B: The Good Earth set in China

If the author's name is a state, region, province, etc the book B setting must take place within that named area
Book A:Plainsong by Kent Haruf
Book B: Riddley Walker set in Canterbury, Kent

You must provide a link connecting Canterbury to Kent if the location is not clearly mentioned in the book's GR record

If the author's name is a city or smaller municipal unit the book B setting must be in that specific location:
Book A: Soon I Will Be Invincible by Austin Grossman
Book B: Hello, Darkness, set in Austin, Texas.

Book A: Deep Storm by Lincoln Child
Book B: Fangirl, which takes place in Lincoln, Nebraska.

Book A: The Last True Cowboy by Kathleen Eagle
Book B: Under the Mesquite, set in Eagle Pass, Texas

Book A: Killing Moon by Rebecca York
Book B: A Werewolf in Manhattan, set in New York City

This list of places might help: Places

Required: If the setting of Book B is not mentioned in its GRs description or setting metadata, you must provide a link to a reference showing that the book is set in the named location. If it's not obvious, explain the connection between the author's name and the setting.

message 8: by Delmy (last edited Feb 21, 2014 04:59PM) (new)

Delmy (needfulreads) I am going to read these -->

A:Kraken by China Miéville
B: Balzac and the Little Chinese Seamstress by Sijie Dai (set in China)

Setalpgninnpsekil | 51 comments I see by your example that it is okay to use only one word of a multiple word place (new york). Can we also use part of a place name provided that the remaining part of the place name is a suffix used to indicated a place, like "ville"? For example, could I read a book by Peter James and then read a book set in St. Petersburg?

Sheila (sheilaj) | 2221 comments How about a book by Robin Cook and a book set in Chicago which is Cook County even if it only says Chicago in the blurb?

OR

A book by Stuart Woods and a book set in a forest?

Fandury | 957 comments Will this Work?

Book A: The Rhetoric of Death by Judith Rock

Book B: Cujo by Stephen King

The second book is set in the town Castle Rock, Maine

Rebecca my real life bookclub just read One Second After. I thought I would hate it but it turned out to be a VERY powerful book that sure makes you think. I would highly recommend it.

Rhonda | 56 comments Will these work:

The Other Daughter by Lisa Gardner

with

24 Hours by Greg Iles, which is set in Jackson, MS. The GR description does not clearly state that fact but I have found links that do. Book description on this page: http://www.amazon.com/24-Hours-Greg-I...
and overview on this page:
http://www.barnesandnoble.com/w/24-ho...

Also, if these books are approved, should I submit those 2 links for Jackson, MS when I submit the task for points?

Thanks!

I'm a goofball. I meant to post this.

Cold Blooded by Lisa Jackson

message 19: by Sheila (new)

Sheila (sheilaj) | 2221 comments I saw that too Dee but a combo of Lisa JACKSON and Greg Iles would be super. Two of my very favorite authors. What have you come up with for this Dee?

message 20: by Apoorv (new)

Apoorv Moghe (goodreadscomapoorv) | 52 comments Sandy / Kristi this task is indeed intriguing and definitely smart.

Need approval for these two books :

Book A : The Call of the Wild by Jack London

Book B : Bridget Jones's Diary by Helen Fielding (set in London)

message 21: by Dee (new)

Dee (austhokie) | 8947 comments not sure yet...lol! i'm toying with London - but that seems too easy...haha!

message 22: by Jessica (new)

Jessica (sureshot26) | 745 comments Drat, I was all set to use Call of the Wild but it's no good - less than 300 pages and tagged as children's. The Sea Wolf might work, though.

Learning to Die in Miami: Confessions of a Refugee Boy by Carlos Eire paired with a book set in Ireland?

Thanks!

message 26: by Coralie (new)

Coralie I'm thinking about reading a book by Victoria Hislop and a book set in Melbourne, probably Murder and Mendelssohn, with a link showing that Melbourne is in the state of Victoria.

message 27: by Seakbee (new)

Seakbee | 185 comments I would like to use A Town Like Alice for book B along with Alice Munro as my author pick. The setting mentioned on GR shows as Alice Springs, Australia but there is also mention of Malaya and England in the summary (but not mentioned in the setting). Would this combination be acceptable? Thanks!

message 28: by Coralie (new)

Coralie Actually, I don't think any of A Town Like Alice is actually set in Alice Springs. They wanted to build a town like Alice Springs.

message 29: by Kristina Simon (new)

Kristina Simon (kristinasimon) | 11204 comments Susan A wrote: "L.A. Witt can I use this author for Los Angeles?"

If you provide a link, like the Wikipedia article on Los Angeles that states that Los Angeles is "often known by its initials L.A.," then yes that will work.

message 30: by Kristina Simon (new)

Kristina Simon (kristinasimon) | 11204 comments Coralie wrote: "Could I use Elizabeth Moon and a book set on the moon?"

You can, but the book must be set on the moon for at least half the book.

No, sorry, the place name would have to be separate words. So, for example, you could read something by Peter James and a book set in James City County, Virginia, which includes Williamsburg.

Robin Cook works with Cook County, Illinois, which includes Chicago. When you post, you just need to include a reference like that Wikipedia article to link the two.

Your example of Stuart Woods would work, too, as long as at least half the book is set in the woods. This one would work: A Walk in the Woods: Rediscovering America on the Appalachian Trail ;-)

That makes a LOT more sense.... ;-)

Yes, Lisa Jackson would work with 24 Hours. You just need to explain the connection between the books and include one of the links you provided when you post so DLMRose doesn't have to go looking for the setting.

You've got the right idea but, unfortunately, The Call of the Wild has the genre "children's" on its main page and is only 172 pages long. Any book with the genres "children's" or "kids" on it main page must be 300+ pages to get points for a 30-point task.

As Jessica pointed out a few posts later, The Sea Wolf by Jack London would work with Bridget Jones's Diary.

You're right, Jessica. The Call of the Wild won't work, but The Sea Wolf will.

Corduroy Mansions will work with a Jack London book, just make sure it's not tagged "children's" if its under 300 pages.

Book 2 : Persuasion by Jane Austen (set in Somerset)
