I'm currently reading book 4 in the song of fire and ice series (game of thrones) its kinda boring. getting better slowly, but im only halfway through so far. this might be the end of me and this series though, it is just not interesting.

Mirjam Penning (mirjampenning) | 129 comments My current read is okay, so far. It doesn't bore me. It's a true crime book and several serial killers are discussed. Not only that, but also interviews with surviving victims, which makes it more interesting to me. Usually it's all about the killers and victims seem to get a secundary part. In this book, the surviving victims get a podium. I like that.

message 6: by Vannahmercedes (new)

Vannahmercedes | 15 comments I am currently reading several books (which is the norm for me,lol). Doctor sleep by Stephen king, this is pretty good so far although I'm only on the 2nd chapter; The Tea Rose by Jennifer Donnelly, which I absolutely adore because the main character reminds me so much of myself and has many of my ambitions which really helped me to relate to the book, I am nearly finished; Under a graveyard sky by John Ringo, not such a fan; The great book of Amber by Roger Zelazny is odd but in a good way; The Time Machine by H.G Wells, actually I have not started reading this one yet but am about to within the next day or two.

message 7: by Mirjam (new)

Mirjam Penning (mirjampenning) | 129 comments Dave, I got that one by doing searches for e-books, so you should be able to get it easily.

Vannah, I'm curious why you read several books at the same time.
I only read one at a time. I do the challenge here and it is stated I am reading two books, but that second one is an encyclopedia. ;)

message 8: by dave (new)

dave (thebat37) | 2448 comments Mod
i like to read more then one book at a time too. though currently im only reading the one, its so damn boring i am thinking of starting up another to keep me entertained, lol. vannah the time machine is a classic, i hope you enjoy it.

mirjam i will definitely be lookin for it. i do love e books, lol, its so much easier to find books

message 9: by Vannahmercedes (new)

Vannahmercedes | 15 comments Hi Mirjam, my reading of multiple books simultaneously is nothing but a habit (good or bad I'm not sure) that I picked up as a kid. I guess I am just impatient because I will buy several books at the store and read a chapter out of each the same night. Lol.

Hi Dave, I think I will enjoy it looks interesting, thanks. Have you read it before?

If you both like ebooks there is an app called free books that has thousands of classics for free.I'm not sure if its just for the iPad though.

i have indeed read it before, its my second favourite verne story. favourite is journey to the center of the earth. that was a great one. i do love ebooks tho i have just an old fashioned kindle, lol. i tend to download my books as torrents so price isnt an issue. plus ebooks are just so much easier to read while eating, lol.

message 11: by Mirjam (last edited Feb 28, 2014 01:22PM) (new)

Mirjam Penning (mirjampenning) | 129 comments I have to admit that I am a bit old fashioned. I don't make use of mobile internet. I can't work with such small screens, haha.

Vannah, nothing wrong with a habit. Everyone has their own preferences. :)
I, for example, have the ritual that I need to read before I fall asleep. That means that I have to print my e-books and take them to bed. I do read online, but more forum/community messages or articles. Books I don't read online.

Dave, sure, I found a lot through torrents as well and I loved every find. Of course, I also came up with nothing a certain number of times. That was a bummer. ;)

ah a classic, i am a fan of shakespeare, of the plays i have read id say the tempest is my favourite, but to be honest i definitely like watching the plays played out, either as intended or with a spin. its all good to me.

message 13: by Mirjam (new)

Mirjam Penning (mirjampenning) | 129 comments Welcome Sam.
I can't add something useful about Shakespeare though, but I wish you enjoyment while reading.

message 14: by Mirjam (new)

Mirjam Penning (mirjampenning) | 129 comments At the moment I read a Dutch book. 'De Boodschapper' (In English: The messenger) by Kader Abdollah. That's a pen name. His real name is far more difficult and quite long. He's Iranian decent, but came to live in the NL and started to write books in Dutch. I admire that, because Dutch isn't an easy language to learn for foreigners and then write books in that language..wow.
I have 'a thing' for Iran, government and sharia excluded, so I do have quite a collection with this theme.

i hope your book is going well mirjam.

i am currently watching cartoons, what a shock, lol. regretting my lack of progress today, total lazy day. monday i am dedicating to work work work.

message 18: by Mirjam (new)

Mirjam Penning (mirjampenning) | 129 comments Well, the subject is up to my alley, so to speak.
The book is in the shape of letters of women, who tell about their lives in having been unappreciated as women. To bring it real mildly.
I like the book. Of course I have a few comments, but that will be written down in my review.
That's sort of the deal. Win a book, receive it for free, read it and then write a review.

do you enter the contests often? i see them from time to time but im not one for winning, never seems to go my way, lol, so ive never bothered to enter. how do they send you the book? in ebook format?

message 20: by Mirjam (new)

Mirjam Penning (mirjampenning) | 129 comments Yes, I do participate, but only when I'm really interested in the subject of the book. What I usually would read and I see something in that range, I enter.
This is the first I won.
Usually I never win anything, and wouldn't bother to participate in anything, so this was a really pleasant surprise!

Zom-B (Zom-B, #1) by Darren Shan
I just don't like how the main character finally incounters zombies near the end of the book.
But hell, it's such a damn good story!

just started the alchemist, so far i am unimpressed. everyone raves, im not seeing why yet.

message 24: by Mirjam (new)

Mirjam Penning (mirjampenning) | 129 comments Oh, one from Paulo Coelho. Somehow I can't see it either why so many like his books. I guess I just like different books. ;)

message 25: by dave (new)

dave (thebat37) | 2448 comments Mod
agreed mirjam, but i shall get through it, its a very easy to read book, like it was written by a 4th grader in a rush.

message 26: by Mirjam (last edited Apr 02, 2014 03:43PM) (new)

Mirjam Penning (mirjampenning) | 129 comments I read a different one from him a few years back. By lack of something else to read, while I stayed at the owner of the book for two weeks. My own reading material I brougth along had come to an end, so I tried Paul Coelho. I forgot the title. It had something to do with a pilgrim tour. It was okay, but I wasn't impressed in the least.

To add, I'm not a native English speaking person but I found it an easy read as well, so I guess you must be right about the 4th grade part. It's also possible he sounds like it, because he's from Brazilian decent?
Good to know, though, I might sound the same with my book if I do not pay attention.

just started Breaking News: An Autozombiography, a good fun zombie story to get the taste of the alchemist out of my mouth, lol. im very much enjoying it so far, i loves me a good outbreak story

I still have to finish the book I'm reading Currently. It's called Matched. It's really good though.

im actually in the middle of a feast for crows as well, im not really digging it to be honest. im kinda stalled about 40% through, ive even read a couple books since putting it down, lol. i will pick it up again though, and at least finish it. but im thinking my affair with the song of fire and ice might be over.

lol i dont know gabby, i just dont know. things between us havent been right for a while now. and from decent sources ive heard book 5 is much of the same. ive got serious series commitment issues

message 31: by Mirjam (new)

Mirjam Penning (mirjampenning) | 129 comments My current read is about the real CSI people. I have put aside the businessplans for dummies for a bit. That is more of a long haul read, so that's okay to me.
The beginning of the book I read now wasn't too appealing to me. It is set up by short parts of interviews with people 'in the field'. That's fine, but if you only get bits and pieces from several people, one after the other, it more seems loose parts flowing around. Not really that well blended together. You also get the real short stories of cases they handled and I am more an in-depth kind of person.
I changed my view on it, though, I now pay mostly attention to what I can learn from the information, instead of focussing on the bits and pieces of the case itself. That worked.

Danielle Stengel (bookworm_77) | 5 comments i am currently reading My Sister's Keeper by Jodi Picoult

so far i am enjoying it, i am on page 32.

Crossed the crazy infection comic? That was terrifying, lol

message 35: by [deleted user] (last edited Apr 13, 2014 07:53PM) (new)

No! lol though I like that one. lol It's the sequel to the matched book I was reading. It's a series by Ally Condie. they are really good.

message 36: by Mitchell (new)

Mitchell Horkoff I'm just finishing up The Shining by Stephen King. I think it is definitely one of his better novels. It is a simple concept but really powerful at the same time, which is a lot better than the elaborate story lines that he's been churning out recently. Anyone else a Stephen King fan?

message 37: by [deleted user] (new)

That's a good one! I love Stephen King. I always thought he was such an amazing writer. Every once in awhile I try and model my writing after his.

message 38: by dave (new)

dave (thebat37) | 2448 comments Mod
You know what, I'm not the biggest fan to be honest. I love his stories, they make amazing movies, but his books are so descriptive to the point of being annoying. I haven't read the shining though, perhaps I should. I know he recently released a sequel to it right? Doctor sleep or something along those lines? I do love the movie version tho, and the much closer to the plot of the book, or so I am told, mini series.

message 39: by [deleted user] (new)

The movie is amazing. I haven't seen it in awhile though. I'll have to watch it again.

message 40: by Mitchell (new)

Mitchell Horkoff I am a fan of the movie as well but have to say that book is far and away the better of the two. I agree that King can be overly descriptive (often to an annoying degree) but that description is almost necessary in the Shining to really bring the Overlook Hotel to life and illustrate the terrifying psychological aspects of the novel.

Surprisingly enough, King hates the movie! He usually honours film makers that have worked on his books but he has nothing nice to say about Stanely Kubrick!

message 41: by [deleted user] (new)

Usually the book is way better than the movie. They never do a book justice.

message 42: by dave (new)

dave (thebat37) | 2448 comments Mod
Normally this is true fangs, but when it comes to king and me its just the opposite, lol. Loved It the movie, book bored me to death. Same with pet semetary , its a weird occurrence but true , for me anyways.

message 43: by [deleted user] (new)

Well it happens. I have one book that's like that. Frankenstein. Loved the movie. Book put me to sleep! lol

message 44: by dave (new)

dave (thebat37) | 2448 comments Mod
ah we differ yet again, lol. frankenstein is my all time favourite book. makes me get all misty eyed whenever i get to the ending, feel so bad for the monster. the movie on the other hand, i dont know which one youre talking about as there have been so many, werent too good in my eyes. none of em. its a hard story to get right on screen.

message 45: by [deleted user] (new)

I mean the book is good. It's just the wording is not what I like.

message 46: by dave (new)

dave (thebat37) | 2448 comments Mod
that is understandable, its definitely written in a different time, has that dialect and what not. what version of the movie did you love?

message 47: by Mirjam (last edited Apr 14, 2014 02:14PM) (new)

Mirjam Penning (mirjampenning) | 129 comments I really liked the Stephen King movie Christine. You know, the 'alive' car. I think I also have read books of him, but that was in a far past, because I only vaguely remember. I guess it didn't impress me that deep, lol.
I saw the movie IT. To be honoust, it was okay to me, but that was about IT. ;)

At the moment I read a shorter (Dutch) book I won here (2nd, up until now) about publishing on Amazon. That's very useful to me. The only thing that is requested from me is that I do a review after I read it. That's very fine with me. I'm enthousiastic about it and I already almost am halfway through.

message 48: by hugsandcookies (new)

hugsandcookies | 44 comments I'm currently reading 3 books at one time but the latest is a series called BY A THREAD by R L Griffin. Now that I'm on Book 2 it's kind of lagging for me and the MC Stella is starting to annoy me a little. I kind of want to carry on but then I don't. The story is good but it's just the insecurity she has about her life. aargh I need to just go with it and finish what I started.
