this is a place to ask for, recommend and discuss the various horrors that come in all sorts of packages on our screens. from documentary to full blown hollywood adaptation, lets talk about it.

first off let me recommend a documentary that i have been unable to get off my mind. it is a truly disturbing and perplexing story that as of yet has no answer. there's something wrong with aunt diane. it chilled me the bone, a documentary about a woman who was completely normal. one day she drives the wrong way on the freeway for hours, all the while having her nieces and nephew in the car. eventually she crashed head on into on coming traffic, killing everyone in the other car too. the whole tale is so damn sad and confusing and angering. to be honest she really reminded me of women i know, her life before the fateful car ride. very very similar personalities, perhaps thats why i am still thinking about it months later. anyways, it was a great doc, hbo i believe, but not for the feint of heart thats for sure.

Mirjam Penning (mirjampenning) | 129 comments The latest documentary I watched was from 'Cracking Crime'. I usually only watch documentaries that are approximately 45 minutes. I assumed this one was too, but then I saw it was barely 30. I was already into the story, so I kept watching.

They didn't solve the case, by the way. A mother of two disappeared and about six months later they found her buried in turf. A guy that usually went to that area to get that stuff, was digging and found her skeleton that way.

What striked me was that they apparently didn't think the husband did it. While it was only his story that she left the house again around 9 at night, on her own accord. He told he only heard her go again, because he was upstairs shaving. Who says that's true. He could have done away with her as well. Statistics aren't in his favor.

I forgot her name, but I do remember she was working as some kind of guard in a prison and she disappeared in '91. It wasn't in America. Maybe UK? Not sure anymore.

i find those some of the toughest to watch, the kind of crimes that dont have an answer or a conclusion. i dwell on them for months and months, lol. trying to figure out what much more talented and intelligent people then i could not. ive not heard of that case, at least i dont know if i have. do you remember what the doc was called? sounds interesting.

ive got another recommendation for you. this time its a much more public and celebrity infested crime, but its a crime that i have been curious about for years. who killed nancy? thats the name of the doc, its about sid and nancy and their lurid tale. absolutely the best doc i have seen about the case so far. with interviews and newly released information my eyes were opened. for the first time in my life i thought perhaps sid was innocent. check out the flick and let me know what you think.

Mirjam Penning (mirjampenning) | 129 comments Yes, it bothers me too if there just isn't any answer (yet). Why couldn't they solve it. What did they miss? Is that person really that good with covering his tracks? And on and on, the questions pop up in my head.
The program is called: Cracking Crime Cold Cases - The Murder of Patricia Doherty. If you can't find it, I can give you a link.

Found 'your' documentary. Didn't see this one, but it's already downloading to my archive. It's quite long, so it might take a few days before I have watched this.

do you consider war docs as true crime?

message 6: by Mirjam (new)

Mirjam Penning (mirjampenning) | 129 comments Depends on what happens in them. If they discuss or show for example the crimes that are done to the Jews in concentration camps in WOII, I do consider it true crime. If it happened for real and if a crime was or multiple crimes were committed, it fits the category. At least in my book.

I have a 'thing' for based on true story movies. I have a number of them in my archive as well. Some people collect things irl, I collect this digitally, together with documentaries. As long as the subject is true crime or based on true crime, I want it.

im a big war doc fan, or revolution. just watched tsar to lenin, this doc of first hand footage of the russian revolution that took over 13 years to compile. it was so good. but if you like based on true story stuff here is a list of killer movies just for you

h h holmes americas first serial killer
gacy
bundy
evilenko
citizen x
karla (hard to watch and very disturbing)
10 rillington place

theres a bunch more of course but this is just off the top of my head

Mirjam Penning (mirjampenning) | 129 comments Nice of you to give a list. I followed up on it and most I could find on youtube and I added those to my archive.
The movies with Bundy I have watched. I think there were two. Sideways he's also in The Riverman, but then it's of course more about the part that he wanted 'to help' with Ridgeway.
Of the two movies I watched about Bundy, I found The Deliberate Stranger with Mark Harmon the best. In that one you don't see him actually busy with graphically killing anyone. It's more strongly suggested in a suspense kind of way. The other one is far more graphic, but in a way they also have added humor(?)to the movie. Like when he is out stealing stuff. Some scenes were weird in that movie. I both have those in my archive. The one with Mark was a bit hard to get, but eventually I was lucky.

I also saw one about Gacy, but yesterday I found out there are several movies about that guy. I downloaded two.

Evilenko, Citizen X, Karla, check. Downloaded them as well. But I do remember I already saw a movie about Karla and Paul Bernard. There must be multiple of that couple as well.

The other two no such luck on youtube. Not complete movies. I will do a search on google soon and see how far I get there.

sounds pretty interesting. im goin through a series called nazi collaborators, it is incredibly interesting. its a documentary show so its not a movie though. goin with crime i just watched this show called forensic files: serial killers that you would probably be interested in mirjam. its available to download on kat

message 11: by Mirjam (new)

Mirjam Penning (mirjampenning) | 129 comments It was an okay documentary and there was a solution. It wasn't about a case that wasn't solved. So, I don't have to wonder anymore where the person is or who did it.
That all got explained.
The one thing I don't like about this series-documentary is the start of it. It may be a personal thing, but I am not interested in how the life in that town is. I couldn't care less. ;)
Luckily that's only a few minutes.

Mirjam Penning (mirjampenning) | 129 comments Watched a few documentaries of the series-documentary Vanished, with Beth Holloway. Her daughter vanished in 2005 on Aruba and we all know who the culprit is, but can't proof it. Luckily he, Joran van der Sloot, is already locked up in Peru for the next two decades for the murder of Stephany Flores.
After, he won't be off the hook.
Then America wants him for extortion.
Joran van der Sloot, the creep, is of Dutch decent, but I of Dutch decent as well am not too happy about that.
Anyway, I'm in the middle of the episode Imbo Petrone - Gosch Berelez.

that all does indeed sound interesting. though i must admit the show vanished sounds a little odd. beth holloway hosts this show? does that seem weird to anyone else? a woman who lost her daughter taking advantage of the situation to host a tv show and become a celebrity? or am i reading into the whole situation wrong.

i do have a great addition though, auto focus from 2002. its a movie about bob crane who was murdered while he slept. the case has never been solved. it was a great movie, though theres lots of nudity so make sure no kids are about, or elderly family members. i find it very awkward whenever im watching tv with a grand parent and nudity makes an appearance, so yea, i wouldnt watch this one with grandma, lol. it was a great flick tho

Mirjam Penning (mirjampenning) | 129 comments Yes, she's hosting it. I don't know if this show is still running currently. It might be from a number of years back. And no, I find it perfectly logical that a woman like Mrs. Holloway would host it. She knows how it feels to not know where a family member loved one is, that this someone just vanished one day and never was heard of again. It eats at you greatly.
And I really can't agree with you she is taking advantage of something. In my opinion that is somewhat rude and harsh to say about a mother who lost her daughter. It consumed her life, even so much so that she can't do anything else than making it a cause to stand by others who go through the same thing.
I feel for her. One of the worst things that can happen to a mother happened to her and she can't even tell for sure her daughter is dead, let alone that she knows where she is. Natalee most likely will never be found again. Not one bone of her. That's horrible and this woman should not be condemned for anything she has done in the past, currently and in the future that has to do with what happened to her. She didn't ask for this, it happened to her.
So yes, I think you read into it wrong. Or that you just have not thought about why someone could go this path and step into the world of television and vanished people. I'm 100% sure she rather would be unknown and have her daughter savely at home then this situation. Media is just a tool, to keep vanished people in the picture of the public, because someone might know something and could come forward after getting reminded or plead to.

Bob Crane sounds familiar. Will look into it. Thanks.

certainly didnt mean to touch a nerve there mirjam. though i might touch it again cuz i still dont quite understand i guess. i mean it still just feels off to me. so i have some clarifying questions about the show that perhaps will clear it up for me. is it an american show? if so was it like americas most wanted? informing and asking for information. also what made her qualified to host the show, other then the tragedy she went through. is she a psychologist? lawyer perhaps? investigator? its just it seems off putting to me if she got the show because of what happened to her daughter. i mean even john walsh was a criminal investigator before his son was taken from him i think. or is it more a show like a news show? a nancy grace-esque kind of accusatory festival. im not a fan of hers to be honest, but she was a lawyer i believe before getting her horrid show. it just seems like there should be more to the host of a show like that then having gone through the terrible thing that she had to ordeal. anchors and hosts are normally in the profession for quite a while before they make it to having there own show. so i guess thats what i am really stuck on, did she have prior tv experience? i hope im not upsetting you by this, i certainly have no malicious intentions. i just am curious and i speak my mind. two things that have certainly gotten me in trouble in the past, lol.

Mirjam Penning (mirjampenning) | 129 comments I know you mean well, Dave. I consider you a nice person. My piece of text was even mostly in general. I watched quite some episodes of this show already on youtube and some comments there about her just started to annoy me.

For example about the voice she has. Read that multiple times. Then I think: Really? You're commenting about her voice? That is the thing that annoys you? While we have a mother here that lost her daughter, knows who's involved but can't get justice, he basically got away with it and is only in jail because of what he did to another woman. But all people can say about her is that either her voice is annoying, or she must have had plastic surgery too much or whatever.
So little compassion and for me I am more annoyed that Joran character got away with what is probably a murder.

I have a counter question. If you were a father and your child was missing wouldn't you try every single avenue there is to keep the missing of that precious child in the public? I would. I would be on tv all over the place as well. Anything for my child. Anything to try to get answers. She knows basically nothing. And she wants justice. I would want that too and I would not give that a rest.
Yes, she has an agenda but that is mostly that no one forgets her daughter is still missing and that the case is still officially unsolved.

I don't know her professional background. For me it's fine if she didn't have any background in this field before she became a host on this show. Maybe she just changed her profession, like so many others.
I have done as well basically.
I was a secretary, but I feel more at home as an author and a webcontent manager. Life can put you in another direction, either if that is tragedy or something more innocent as finding out a certain profession is the wrong one.

So, the touched nerve was more in general that I felt like defending her. It wasn't personal and you're not in trouble with me, lol.

well fair enough. im still not completely sold but i have said my piece about it. hopefully we are still friends :) ive never heard her voice so i have nothing to comment on that mess, tho i do certainly agree that she shouldnt be put down, but unfortunately that is the price of fame. youd think people would have common sense enough to not bother her with shit like that. hopefully she doesnt read it all too. joran will be rotting in jail. i dont know if hes in there forever, not familiar with the case, but i am sure hes locked up for quite a long time. hopefully he wont make it out.

in answer to your question, id do everything i could but i wouldnt host a tv show going over similar tragedies. i would only be in the public eye for one reason, to get info about my kid. but hopefully i wont ever have to deal with that particular situation.

message 18: by Mirjam (new)

Mirjam Penning (mirjampenning) | 129 comments Of course we still can go through one door. It was just a discussion. Nothing personal. I know this isn't a discussion group like other fora, but a little bit of that here couldn't hurt. And you're entitled to your opinions and views on subjects.

Because her daughter disappeared, she got a forced new mission in life. Find the missing and bring justice by getting the culprits behind bars. To me that's a noble cause. I can only applaud that. She will be in mental pain for the rest on her life, but instead of dwelling on it and going under she tries to do some good with her tragedy, now she can't do anything other than that for her daughter. I'm not sure if I would be capable of going beyond my own tragedy and caring about other people's tragedy. To me she clearly does care and she can relate to other people's feeling. She truely understands. No, I just can't see anything wrong in what she's doing. And I don't see her as a famous person. Just someone that got known, because something devastating happened to her.
And I'm sure the father of Adam Walsh would have done the same thing as he did now, even if he hadn't had any professional background in it.

It may sound I still try to convice you. Maybe I am, maybe it's just pointing out a different view on things. Who knows.

Joran has been sentenced to 28 years of prison in Peru, a few years back. He only confessed, because he thought his sentence would then be múch lighter. He had miscalculated, lol. But still, he wíll get out and he won't even be that old then. He still perfectly could bring harm on women. That's why I'm glad America has made sure he's theirs after his sentence. I think he will go straight from Peru to America and await trial and sentencing there in jail. I really hope it will turn out that way and they put him away for another 20 years or so. Then he wíll be old and has been indoors for 75% of his life, which I think is appropriate. By the way, the extortion is about him promising to tell Beth Holloway where Natalee is for like 25,000 dollars. When he had a part of it, he disappeared and fled to Peru to go gamble in casinos and luring another woman, Stephany Flores, to a hotelroom, killing her and then fleeing to Chili.
Beth already predicted back then he one day would harm another woman and he just did exactly. Five years to the day with the disappearance of her daughter.

Currently watching a movie about the west memphis three called the devils knot. Its ok, tho having followed the case since the beginning i can definitely say the documentary trilogy is indeed much better. This movie does point out how badly the trial was handled pretty well tho. Seen through the eyes of time its almost ridiculous how many things were wrong with that trial.

The Deliberate Stranger and The Stranger Beside Me: both based on the killing spree of Ted Bundy.

To Catch A Killer: story of John Wayne Gacy's killing spree. Great film and awesome performance from Brian Denehy as Gacy.

Small Sacrifices: Farrah Fawcett stars as Dianne Downs, who killed her own kids. A true narcissist and psychotic.

The Betty Broderick Story: Merdadith Baxter stars as the psychotic Betty. Another riveting performance.

been going through a true crime movie phase recently, thought id suggest some flicks. first off, amish grace, but only watch if you are ready to cry. i was crying through pretty much the whole thing, powerful stuff. the hillside strangler (2004) on the other hand had no emotion evoking abilities other than horror at what these guys did. also i finally got around to watching party monster. i remember seeing an american justice on the case that one was based on when i was a teenager so i always figured i knew what i needed to know. but it was actually a great movie, even if you know the horrible story. the acting was excellent and it was funny when its not a funny story, hard to do that in a true crime flick. hmm, what else was there, oh yes, parkland. the flick about the hospital where kennedy died and the people the assassination effected. it was good, not great. better than bobby though, which is a shame cuz rfk would make one hell of a movie. ok i think thats about it. i know there are a couple more but it cant recall them all right now. anyways, these flicks are worth watching if you can find them

i watched a couple true crime flicks today that were both pretty good, so i thought id share.

the deliberate stranger, a made for tv movie from the 80s about ted bundy. it was long, but good. made before he was executed so it was before his last minute confession. everything they thought he was he ended up being and so much worse, but at the time of the making of the film that wasnt known for sure. there were still people holding out hope he was innocent, which is something i dont remember seeing in any of the movies or docs ive seen about him. perhaps cuz they were all made after the execution so even those that thought he was innocent couldnt deny it. anyways, it was an interesting trip to the past.

the killing of john lennon, this was kind of a more artsy film than the more recent chapter 27, but it gave i think a lot more insight into the messed up mind of mark chapman. i have read and seen a lot about this horrible crime cuz i was such a big john lennon fan. ive never got why chapman did what he did. i still dont, but watching this movie made me see how crazy he was. but his excuse of lennon was a phony just doesnt cut it, i want to know more. there has to be more to it than chapman wanting to be famous. bah, it frustrates me, lol, anyways, this was a good movie. id say if youre a fan of true crime this flick was a better look into the mind of a madman then chapter 27.

so yea, those are a couple true crime flicks you should keep your eyes open for fellow true crime fans.

Kimberly (missshy) I watched this documentary on Netflix that i thought was going to be horrible it seemed poorly filmed based on camera angles. Yet i watched it and it was really good. It was called cropsey or some know the case to be called cropsey pipe piper of staten island,About convicted child killer Andre Rand who killed 7 children in the 80s and planted there bodies on the abandoned island where all the old insane asylums are that have been known to have already dark history to them.

Some of the childrens bodies were never found and they believed he killed more then 7 but never could prove beyond the 7. It was only while he was in prison that he wrote letters to the people of the documentary that some of why he did was revealed but he would only give details of why he did to the kids but never to which child and would never give up where the rest were buried. It was so good but i felt for the kids and the family's especially those that never hot to bury there children. They even believed he had an accomplice who helped him and only his accomplice knows where the rest of the victims are. Yet they never found out for sure if he had help they only suspected because the believed that most of it was not possible for one person to pull off. It be interesting if they ever do an update and find more evidence i would like to know.
