Flights of Fantasy discussion

Still on The Ace of Skulls, by Chris Wooding. Very nearly finished it last night, so will probably polish it off tomorrow.

So far it's been very good (as the other Tales of the Ketty Jay have been).

Currently reading The Way of Kings, The Adventures of Sherlock Holmes and Kiss of Steel.

I feel like someone in this group recommended Kiss of Steel, and if so, this group is taking over my liiiiiife.

No complaints though. :)

As part of our March Madnessss challenge I plan to read most of the books on my "03.2014 Possibilities" shelf, including all current and former FoF Group Reads.

I'm also going to start my free month of Oyster (the Netflix for Novels app), in the hopes of finding 3 of the 4 reads for this month in there. (Shadowlands is paper only. My copy should be arriving next week.)

*Grump* it's been a bust, title wise. None of the March titles are available, and the only book I've found so far Swan Song, which I already own.

Thanks Nyssa. That sounds like a great idea! If I didn't already own way to many books that demand my attention I would consider it. I'll wait until I get through my books (if ever at my speed) and when they get a wider selection. I'm fine with the apple products though. I only have apple products. :)

I just finished The Way of Kings this morning (yippee!). I'm hoping to read all the March group reads and I'm planning some books to fulfill the March madnesssss. Right now I'm reading City of Dark Magic and A Turn of Light.

I really wish you would give some Sanderson a try. ;)

WoK was my first Sanderson so I'm excitedly looking forward to reading all the other titles to catch up! :D

Lol, yeah I kinda went on a Sanderson craze that I'm still currently on. I'm thinking of trying to fit Emperor's Soul in if I have time in March. If not, then I'll read it in April before I officially start Malazan Book of the Fallen.

Edit: I also find that reading more books by the same author helps with my book hangover. If I try switching to someone else, it usually takes a few days before I can really get into it. Since all these books were by Sanderson, I'll be able to jump from one to the next with less downtime.

Well... I'll have the pre-release WoR chapters re-read done tonight, and the first Mistborn book done tomorrow... so what the hell, I'll read it Monday night since I won't be doing much sleeping anyways lol (WoR jitters have already set in).

My first goal for the month is to finish The Way of Kings in time to start reading book 2 Words of Radiance. I'm also hoping to squeeze in my next Malazan (book 2), aSoIaF (book 3), and Dark Tower (book 2) books. Trying to keep on track with my 2014 goal and read as many as I can fit in this month.

I continue to resist the cult of Sanderson :). Rithmatist and Steelheart were good but I didn't like Mistborn so he's been a bit hit and miss for me so far.

I'm reading Kraken at the moment. Good story but it's always a bit of a fight with his writing style to be honest.

I DNF'd Steelheart. Not like I didn't like it...I just couldn't sustain interest.

Glad I'm not the only one who abandoned Steelheart; I was feeling like an outcast! ;)

I liked Steelheart but couldn't really get behind Rithmatist. To each their own! :)

Also not a cult member. Thought Rithmatist, Steelheart and Warbreaker we're all serviceable, but don't get the fuss. I've been repeatedly told I can't really judge til I read Mistborn, though, so once I cave on that I guess I'll know for sure.

I hope to finish "12 Years a Slave".

Sanderson is a mystery to me as well. I basically love his writing but I always hate his female characters which is why I fizzled on the Mistborn trilogy and didn't totally love Steelheart.

For all the haters, it's funny that Sanderson wins every time he's on a GR poll. lol

Felina, what is it about his female characters that you don't like? Do they just not come across as real?

Fortunately, Sanderson mixes up his genres a lot, so there is usually something for most people between Mistborn, Stormlight Archive, Rithmatist, and Steelheart.

However, once you start to read lots of his books, some characters start to overlap in your head. He also writes like this--not that it's a bad thing--all the time.

I loved Mistborn the first time I read it but (and I hate to say this) sometimes it feels as though Sanderson keeps writing the same story over again.

I'd love to see him do something different.

That's pretty much my personal reason . My husband bought the Mistborn trilogy for me after I had expressed interest months before (but then forgot). It sat on my shelf, untouched, for a few weeks, and then when I did decide to read it, I drifted away.
I was pretty happy, though, when we decided to read it as a buddy read, because I do want to give it another go.

I thought maybe he just had votespren floating around on GR.

Yeah, that's my reaction. Everyone loves Sanderson. Shoot, I've managed to get 3 of his DTBs in my collection but I just haven't read him. So groups are the best.

I love the Tales of the Ketty Jay! I haven't gotten around to Ace of Skulls yet. I plan to though.

Sinistermer, I finished it off the other day. Can't say for certain, but I suspect you won't be disappointed.

I'll probably give Keepers of Arden a go, and then A Game of Battleships.

For the most part, Sanderson has gotten most of his cult base from WoT and/or Stormlight Archive. I like Mistborn so far personally, but I agree that it's not the best thing since sliced bread.
