OK I finished. What an incredible and unusual novel! She says in the acknowledgements that someone once told her she would like to read a novel with Zen in it and suggested that Ozeki might write one. I am so glad she did. I hadn't realized that I wanted to read a novel with Zen in it until I read this one. About Deborah's question: I felt the crow at Ruth's house was a manifestation of someone's spirit but I can't decide if it was Haruki #1, Haruki #2 or Nao. Waiting to see the answers of others.

I agree with Judy on both counts.

I also agree, really could have been any of the spirits, but clearly a connection to Nao's family. I listened to this as an audio book and was pleasantly surprised.

I just read about a million interviews with Ozeki. No one asked her about the crow. But I found this question and quote:
