Ariel (arielbissett) THIS WILD RIDE IS OVER! *WHEW*
What did you think? Are you satisfied? Who was your favourite character? Do you feel they got a happy ending?

Let us know your final thoughts!

message 2: by Christian (new)

Christian (christianmingle) It wasn't a big show down ending which most of us are used to but it was a very climatic one. I love how they ended the game, Panic. My one problem was was that the relationships in the novel, specifically Heather and Bishop. It said they dated years ago but broke up for some apparent reason which was never fully explained and then they end up together at the end. I seriously thought that Bishop was gay for a whole chunk of the book. I did want to know what ended up happening to Dayna and also if Heather and Lily ended up back with their mother for good. I know that it said that they might temporarily go back to her but I would have love to see Heather or Anne get custody of Lily. But still loved the book! I can see this becoming a anthology series!

message 3: by Ashley (new)

Ashley (tealeavesandbookbindings) This was such a great book. I loved the ending of the Panic game. I wan't too fond of the ending of the book though. Those last couple of pages just felt a bit too cheesy and I felt that they didn't fit in with the tone of the rest of the book. But besides that I'm very satisfied. I'm so glad that Heather won! Also really glad that I was right about the tigers. For awhile I thought they actually weren't going to be part of the plot.

message 4: by Christian (new)

Christian (christianmingle) Yeah, I didn't like the ending but overall the boom was so good!

message 5: by Emma (new)

Emma | 1 comments I kinda wanted Dodge and Heather to end up together for some weird reason--maybe because that's how it usually is? The two main characters end up together? But anyways. As a whole, I really enjoyed it, just not the ending so much. Like, when Heather took Dodge's car that we knew was going to blow up? I feel like that should have had something bigger of it. She basically jumped out and was totally fine, I thought she would have been more injured. But as I said, I enjoyed it.

Keanna (JustKey) (keyreadthat) I enjoye this book, and I am so happy that Heather had an happy ending with Bishop. I loved how Panic ended with such a bang. I would love to know what happened with Heather's mother. I LOVED this book.

message 7: by Lisa (new)

Lisa (lisadannatt) I'm disappointed, I've waited for this book since Delirium finished and it just wasn't as good. It's a good book, but not a great book.
The ending... Was cheesy. When Heather pushed the accelerator, I expected an explosion. That would have given a deeper perspective to the book

message 8: by Carol (new)

Carol (thereadingwallflower) | 4 comments Overall it was a good book. My favorite character was probably Dodge just because his character development in the book was amazing. The ending wasn't what i was expecting. I thought that it was going to go down with fireworks and the whole nine yards. Although it didn't go like that it was fulfilling to the point that I am okay with it. For some reason though I did feel that in some parts the book fell a bit flat for my taste.

I agree, it starts so fast and exciting and then it's so tidy at the end. It's not how Oliver has done things before

message 10: by Kassey (new)

Kassey (kclynne) | 18 comments I loved it. I did not expect at all that Heather would end up with Dodge's car in the Joust. I also thought it would create and inmediate explotion but was kind of relieved when it didn't happen and I didn't expect the tiger to be there. I actually liked the cheesy ending, Heather was quite miserable for a long time and her life was missing cheeseness, it did upset me that she gave Nat part of her prize I didn't feel she deserved it. I'm happy she got her happy ending.

message 11: by Lois (new)

Lois | 11 comments I loved the way in which the stakes seemed to get higher as the game progressed. At the beginning, Panic didn't even scare me, but at the end my heart was palpitating and I was utterly terrified.

The cheesy ending did bother me, but only because it has left me completely unsatisfied and in want of more information. I want to find out what happened to Danya - did she get married? Did she ever walk again? And if Heather's mother went to prison or ever left them alone!

I felt introducing the character of Luke so close to the end in a different way was a nice surprise, but I can't help feeling it was a little random. It needed just a bit more explanation about his supposed guilt and how it had affected his life.

I loved the way this novel was written, where we jumped between important days and were just told about the less interesting ones. It kept the plot fast and exciting.

Overall, I loved this book but I don't think it was as good as her other novels.

message 12: by Emma (new)

Emma Bowland (thelovablereader) | 7 comments I'm not sure how I feel about the ending. It was kind of predictable table wasn't it? I like that heather and bishop were together, but it wasn't to me as exciting as the rest of the book. Oh! And I'm confused was Vivian supposed to be the other judge or not?
Over all it was an exciting and enjoyable read 4 1/2 stars.

message 13: by Lois (new)

Lois | 11 comments I think Vivian was the other judge, but it really wasn't made very clear...

message 14: by Emma (new)

Emma Bowland (thelovablereader) | 7 comments Okay, b/c I thought Heather implied it, but I didn't remember it ever being said out loud. I was reading the joust scene, and heather was like Bishop and Vivian aren't here, so for the first time I history both of the judges aren't going to be here, and I was like "but who's the other judge?"

message 15: by Crissie (last edited Mar 08, 2014 04:55PM) (new)

Crissie Wood (ctwood09) | 9 comments I think I liked the ending and I like who everyone ended up with. I really liked the tiger in the joust and that Heather wants to go to vet school. I like that Bishop didn't end up in jail and Heather wasn't blown up. I liked that there was both in good and bad in each character so that you'd hate/ be annoyed with them, but the absolutely love them later. What I didn't like was the things that weren't wrapped up. (How was no one arrested at the joust, what did they do about the tiger, what did Ray do when he realized Dodge was going to blow him up, etc) Also I kept waiting for Heather to tell Lily that it would be a cold day in hell before she'd ever let Lily compete in Panic, but then again maybe I'm just the spoil sport.

message 16: by Darcy Elizabeth (new)

Darcy Elizabeth Wooow! I really liked this book!
At first I wasn't completely sure, but oh my... What a ride! It seriously had me gripped all the way and the overall feel was awesome, I personally loved the ending too. I shipped Bishop and Heather the whole way, so I am extremely glad they ended up together!

message 17: by Lexie (new)

Lexie (elluna) | 6 comments I wish the characters would have been explored a bit more toward the very end. Which is odd, because on the whole I found this book to be needlessly introspective at times, at least for my taste. And much as I was looking forward to the conclusion and to the "finish line", I still do wish the characters would have been more clearly "defined" at the end. What happened to Natalie's OCD? Is Luke still tormented and free or did he turn himself in for what happened to Dayna? How did Dayna's physical therapy ultimately go, after those hints at improvement? What happens to Lily once Heather goes to college? Where will she live?

Having said that, Heather petting the scared tiger at the joust has to be my favorite scene of the whole book. I'm a sucker for animals. :)

Kristel (kristelreads) | 3 comments I really liked the ending! I was so afraid that something bad would happen to Heather but the ending was very satisfying. Reading this book made me so happy because unexpected things kept on happening and that was what kept me reading the whole time. I really liked how everyone ended up with, and yeah, I just generally love the book :)

Thankyou! I thought at the start that Dodge and Heather would end up together because normally main characters do, I'm glad they didn't!

message 26: by Kelly (new)

Kelly (bookswithkelly) | 5 comments What a great and different book! I loved that mostly everything in this book was unexpected. The only thing I knew for sure was Bishop being a judge. Other than that the relationships were extremely unexpected, because I never knew exactly who would end up together. I loved that Heather won but still split the money with Nat and Dodge. I thought this was such a well rounded book, and so different from the normal. Great job on Lauren Oliver's part! Such a fun Read-A-long to. I finished this book in two days! Now to do my book review on it! if you interested you can check it out this week at https://www.youtube.com/channel/UC8M6...

I still feel like I have SO many questions unanswered though!

message 28: by Shahd (new)

Shahd (shahdashraf) | 2 comments I loved Panic so much and found it very unique with just the perfect balance between character development/roundness and a thrilling plot! The ending made me shake with anticipation and I thought the "thing" with the tiger was epic( that whole scene was very well-narrated in general actually). The wrapping-up made me smile so much as I was very pleased and surprised(LOVED what the winner did with the money).

message 29: by Shahd (new)

Shahd (shahdashraf) | 2 comments Surprisingly though I think I'm the only one who doesn't have any questions after finishing Panic? I thought the book ended at the right point, where we know the characters have reached a peak in their development and the readers know that these characters are going to be fine and they can let them go now. Wonderful book!

Karissa (kentmcfuller) | 2 comments I made a video discussing how i felt so I couldn't be part of this read a long, since I've already finished it! but it's up on my youtube channel, and im not sure if goodreads lets me put links? anyway there's swears in it but ya!!! https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=DHQxm...

message 31: by Anusha (new)

Anusha Bansal | 1 comments I really liked the idea of Panic and the book overall. It's really unique and I actually kinda liked the fact that Dodge and Heather didn't end up together, but were still friends (sort of) because we impact a lot of people throughout our lives but they aren't always a love interest, and it was nice to see a book that showed that instead of a huge love story. I liked the background given for Heather and Dodge, but I do wish that there had been a little more characterization for some of the other characters. Also that the ending had given a little more detail to what happened to the characters, including Dayna, Lily, Heather's mom, Vivian, Ray, etc. Overall I really enjoyed this book and I'm looking forward to Lauren Oliver's other writing :)

message 32: by Vanessa (new)

Vanessa | 1 comments I won't lie, I really enjoyed reading this book. This is the first book I have read from this author and really didn't expect much. But I felt it lacked some. I was wanting more as far as the challenges. It seemed too simple. And I wanted more about the characters. I didn't feel close to them even when we were reading from their perspective.

message 33: by Nouva (new)

Nouva (ladynouf) | 5 comments I loved it i also loved the characters but the ending was abit disapointing i would have loved a more detailed ,more exciting ending than that .

message 34: by Jana (new)

Jana (penguininabluebox) I thought it was really really AWESOME! And boy, I did not see it coming that Bishop was a judge?! I also thought he was gay for some part. I really liked that I couldn't foresee anything that was happening, I really liked the parts besides the game that told us about the characters' daily lives. I'm not too fond of the last "October 8" bit though; I would've preferred for the book to end with Heather placing her hand on top of the tiger's head. I really loved the book overall, though!

message 35: by Julia (new)

Julia (thepennykettle) I actually quite liked this book. I wasn't thrilled with it in the beginning, but as it progressed, my heart was pounding, especially during the Russian roulette!
I liked how the tigers were used as a plot device. That just connected the book a bit more. I especially loved how Heather put her hand on the tiger's head towards the end.
I didn't really like the ending because it was kinda cheesy and the characters seemed to have changed a lot and I want to know more about what happened.
Overall, I still think it was a good book.
I am not completely satisfied, however, because I still have unanswered questions!
1. Is Vivian the second judge or if not who?
2. I kinda want to know more about Heather and Bishop because they tried getting together and it didn't work the first time?
3. Is Krista in jail or not?
4. WHAT HAPPENED TO DAYNA I WANT TO KNOW.

message 37: by Taylor (new)

Taylor (taylorbreslin) I liked this book a lot more than Lauren Oliver's other contemporary book, Before I Fall, and I'm pretty sure I liked it more than the Delirium trilogy as well. The different stages of Panic were really interesting (and terrifying). I liked the characters, but I did have some trouble connecting to them and worrying about them when they were in the obviously dangerous situations. I also liked how Oliver had two POV characters who didn't end up being a couple. Seems pretty uncommon for YA.

I also did a review of Panic on my youtube channel: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=UwAyQU...

message 38: by Andy (new)

Andy Capricorn Okay, the beginning of this book had me really worried (and by beginning I mean the first half of the book). I was having trouble caring about the characters or what they were doing. Panic sounded like an awesome premise but the portrayal of the characters was hard. I also thought at the beginning that Dodges narrative was a bit whack-a-doodle, then again, he did try to blow up Ray... So glad it picked up in the second half and that ending!!! LOVE LOVE LOVE it!

message 39: by cheyenne (new)

cheyenne | 4 comments It's past 4AM, and I've just finished.

The last quarter of the book had my heart racing more often than not, like when Heather had to play Russian roulette, when Lily told Heather the tigers were gone, and of course, during the joust.

I loved when Heather placed her hand on the tiger's head and knew she had won. Definitely one of the best moments of the book!

The ending wasn't my favorite, but I liked it. Heather enrolling in the veterinary services program made me smile. There were some unanswered questions in the end, as others have pointed out, but I'm okay with not having answers. I like the way things wrapped up, and overall I really enjoyed this book! Lauren Oliver continues to be one of my favorite authors. :)

message 40: by Christina (new)

Christina (adventuresinpolishland) | 17 comments I LOVED this book! I flew through it so quickly! I took a break to get a good night's sleep, and had nightmares I was a part of the game. I'm not kidding. The story stayed with me that much.

I was really happy with how this book ended. I am so glad Heather won, and glad she was safe. I had a nervous feeling that she would be killed off in that car explosion..... sidenote, how funny this group is called BOOKSPLOSION now... anyway, I was thankful she survived, and so happy she and Bishop ended up together.

I've never read any of Lauren Oliver's other books, but I definitely want to now. Her writing is amazing. She guides the reader to the ending by allowing him/her to figure out the story, but it still made me want to keep reading even when I though I had the whole thing figured out. Just an excellent reading experience!

message 41: by Annie (last edited Mar 15, 2014 05:28PM) (new)

Annie Really enjoyed this book though I had so many questions that were left unanswered. But I did like how the game ended. Considering everything that Heather was going through I wanted her to win and was glad to see that happen. Also, I was happy to see Bishop and Heather end up together after all the drama. The part where Heather places her hand on the tiger reminded me of another book I had read during my first year in university. It showed how Heather lets go of her fears and sort of frees herself in a sense.

message 42: by Rebecca (new)

Rebecca (rebeccaa_xoh) | 1 comments I'm not done yet, but there's a quote I just read that really spoke to me and I'm sure it did to many of you as well. On page 354, when Heather thinks that Anne is going to kick her out, she says "When you love someone, when you care for someone, you have to do it through the good and the bad. Not just when you're happy and it's easy."

I just really loved that quote and Anne is easily my favourite character in the book aside from Bishop. Now back to reading!

message 43: by Vanessa (new)

Vanessa | 24 comments I was expecting more from the ending. It wasn't quite as exciting as I thought it would be. Overall it's a good book and I enjoyed it but it wasn't great. I knew Heather would end up with the money somehow but I don't like that Nat got part of it. I'm surprised Heather wasn't more hurt in the explosion, I thought for sure someone was going to die. The ending was a little surprising because I just didn't expect it to have such a happy ending or as most people have said "cheesy" ending.

message 44: by ABookReader (new)

ABookReader I think the happy ending, though, is meant for the people that complained about Requiem's lack of ending. I think she could do without the epilogue, I think she wanted to give a proper end to this book, which led to the book' s end.

message 45: by Anna (last edited Mar 19, 2014 03:05PM) (new)

Anna (llovelynights) I was way too ready for Heather to die in that last scene. I was like, so sure that was how it was going to happen. (I think I actually would've enjoyed that ending a lot oops.) But, uh, nope. Happy endings all around. Almost felt a tiny bit anti-climatic, in my opinion.

I never really grew attached to any of the characters, unfortunately, and believe it or not that hasn't happened to me until now—I've only been a big reader like this for, like, a year and a half, maybe two years—so it was kind of strange for me. I was kind of waiting for the feels to kick in the whole time, like "WAIT. I like this character, I'd prefer they didn't die a horrible bloody death," but that kind of sort of never happened.

Aside from the character-development aspect of this book, I really did legitimately enjoy everything else. I thought the pacing was great, those damn crazy-ass Panic tests got my blood pumping, and I really, really adored the metaphor behind the whole story.

Like a lot of other people,I didn't think the super cheesy/happy/call-it-whatever-floats-your-boat ending was the greatest, and there are definitely a few unanswered questions. (Example: Dayna¿¿) I mean, I think one more chapter from Dodge would've been good.

But, hey. I've definitely seen some bad YA book endings, and although this one wasn't the best, it CERTAINLY wasn't the worst.

Anyway, all in all, a very entertaining, fun read. Four stars. Maybe three point five.

(Edit: A day or so later, after letting the book sink in, I've changed my rating to three stars.)

This was my first read-a-long and it was super fun. Can't wait for the liveshow!
:D

message 46: by Lisa :-) (new)

Lisa :-) I think that the ending felt rushed. I expected the scene at the Joust to be longer and more detailed, somehow. It just seemed to be such a lot of build up for something that happened so fast.

I expected something more to be made of Nat's OCD to be honest, I don't know if that aspect of her character was used enough. I also would liked to have known a bit more about how Dodge felt after the final challenge. But I wasn't disappointed by the ending, it felt satisfying enough to me.

I really enjoyed the book though, and it was nice to read something that was a stand alone, as opposed to all these trilogies that are flooding the market right now!

message 47: by Alice (new)

Alice Reeds (alice_reeds) | 3 comments Somehow I was so pumped for this book, I mean the cover and the general idea is great and all... BUT after finishing it last night I ended up only giving it 2 stars out of 5.
I didn't like the last chapter, this whole happy-lovy-dovy mood just I don't know, it wasn't the kind of ending I was hoping for. And also the joust and in general the ending all seemed rushed and somehow didn't seem "right". It's hard to explain.
Generally I found Panic simply boring? I expected something completely different, more dangerous and more electric, yet it seemed more like cold soup. Heather annoyed me most of the time and Dodge, well, I liked him but it also wasn't 'it', you know what I mean?
Most of the times the characters avoided real arguments, really dealing with the problem with each other and thus rather just went away and ignored the world for some time. I never really grew attached to them and so I didn't really care in the end who would win and if Heather would die or not. I was just really ready for the book to come to an end.
Panic was the first book I ever read by Lauren Oliver, even though I have delirium lying on my table right next to me, and somehow it makes me sceptical if I want to read hear other books out of fear that they will be equally cold soup.

Anyways, I enjoyed the read-a-long a lot, reading everybodys opinions and theories. I'm certainly going to watch the live show, curious as to what they will have to say about the book. :)

Kim Alexander (booksandmusicatk) I'm in the minority here, but this book just wasn't my cup of tea. I didn't really like or care about any of the characters and found it surprisingly boring. I did get through it pretty fast, so that's something. Not a terrible book by any means. Just not for me.
