If you're new to the group, take a moment to introduce yourself and push your project. Providing some information will help the other writers become familiar with you.

My name is Joe Terzieva. My book funded through the last Inkshares Sci-fi/Fantasy contest. Publishing my work through Inkshares provides me an incredible opportunity to share my stories with a larger audience, and I feel incredibly honored to do so.

Lost Generation is a story of life in a world where automation makes most jobs obsolete. The reader observes this world from the eyes of those caught in a time of change.

Hi!

My name is C. Brennecke and last week I decided to enter my novel into the Nerdist Collection contest. This is my first time attempting to publish and right now I'm a great big bundle of excitement and nerves.

My book is Seven Shards: The Colors of Wine, and it is a fantasy with political/literary leanings. Large, diverse cast. Very character-driven. A touch of romance, a touch of action, a touch of magic. It's a little more "sword and board" than epic, if you want to put a label on it.

I'd really love to receive some feedback, so please check it out!

Sean Hillman | 7 comments Hello I am Sean Hillman, I go by SM Hillman as a writer. I had put my novel Wicked Boys up for the Sword & Laser contest. It did not get funded, but I did indeed learn a great deal from that experience. I have been a writer and game designer (amateur both) for a long time.

So I am taking a break from Dark Fantasy and going with Military Science Fiction. In THE FACELESS Lt. Isaac Thomas has to come to grips with his need for vengeance against an alien species as he and his soldiers attempt to complete their mission. Any feedback is good feedback even if you hate it (and me lol).

So check out THE FACELESS over at Inkshares. https://www.inkshares.com/projects/th...

Thanks!

John Robin (john_robin) | 299 comments Hello, I'm John Robin, an epic fantasy author. My novel, Blood Dawn, has been up on Inkshares since April and will run until next April.

Blood Dawn is the tale of Rena, a young woman who is the long-lost daughter of a cursed god-king, Azzadul. Set in Gholheim, the capitol of Azzadul's fallen empire, it is about Rena's struggle to rise above those who plan to use her inborn magical abilities for their own gain, and instead to reclaim the throne that is rightfully hers.

I have a 2 minute trailer for Blood Dawn, as well as more information on my Inkshares page, including 3 sample chapters: https://www.inkshares.com/projects/blood-dawn

Thanks!
John Robin

Elan (bonbonelan) Hey folks,

I don't have a writerly moniker as yet, so I'm going by my human name.

Right now I've got a project in the Nerdist contest. I was in the top 10 for the first week, but recently dropped back (presumably to 11th place.)

For the time being, the book is called One. It's about one consciousness being shared by two bodies across a real-world divide: Sderot (a town in southeastern Israel,) and Gaza.

Give it a look, if you will! The (very rough) first chapter is posted to the page.

https://www.inkshares.com/projects/on...-

I have 2 other things up on Inkshares.
Cognitive Leap is a submission for the Big Truths technology anthology: https://www.inkshares.com/projects/co...

The Taking Kid is a retelling of Shel Silverstein's The Giving Tree, from the Tree's perspective:

Thank you, enjoy, and keep writing :)

Paul | 97 comments Here we go again!

I have entered into the Nerdist Collection Contest with hopes to get another book published! THE GOOD NEWS IS this contest is all about unique readers! We placed 2nd in the spring Sword and Laser Contest with most unique readers!

The book in question is titled Motor City Chronicles - Book One: Transgressions.

My friend Patrick Ryerson and I are co-authoring this book together. Our hope is to make it a series of short novellas that tell this legendary tale of good and evil. The story is set mostly in 2030 in the fictionalized Motor City...

In the year 2030, the world struggles to find balance after nuclear war. 17 year old orphan, Cam Blackwell, holds an ancient secret that could bring balance to the Earth. But first, he has bigger problems.

Read the first few chapters on Inkshares (https://www.inkshares.com/projects/mo...), and consider pre-ordering! Thanks for the continued support.

J.-F. Dubeau (jfdubeau) | 99 comments Hello,

My name is Jean-Francois Dubeau but please, by all that is good, call me JF. It's so much easier.

I'm a veteran of the previous Inkshares collection contest which I think entitles me to some kind of PTSD settlement. I was in the shit with Derek and Joe and Ainsworth and others. It was pretty freakin' horrible.

Anyways, for some reason, duty to Queen and country maybe, I jumped back in. I'm in between projects anyways and going through my ideas I started reading 'A God in the Shed' and remembered how much I loved writing that book the first three times and that a fourth re-write would probably make it the story I want to tell. So I entered the contest and apart from the constant need to vomit out of nerves and the lack of sleep, it's going pretty well.

I think I've pre-ordered most of your books. If I haven't it's a matter of time and credits before I do. Feel free to remind me if I haven't.

You can check out more about my project here:

Paul Robinson (robo3687) | 93 comments Hi guys,

My name is Paul Robinson, and like JF, Joe and G Derek I was in the last comp too, and I have entered once more into the breach.

'Ghosts of War' is my first book, it's a sci-fi/military/thriller-y blockbuster type of monster. It's been 6 years in the making and it features a cast of characters that I've really come to love and enjoy writing. The first draft is about 85% complete with an eye to having it finished by the time the nerdist comp ends.

It's a dark story, but there is fun to be had in the telling.

If you head over to the project page there's a bunch of other details about the story, some drawings I had commissioned and a 100 page pdf preview containing the first 8 chapters of the book.

Here's where you'll find it: http://bit.ly/ghostsofwar

Hope you guys like it and that you might even grab a copy :)

You can also follow me on twitter at @robo3687 . I generally tweet about football, wrestling, games and my cat. She's pretty cute, you won't be disappointed.

Hiya! I'm Cara, officially "A.C. Weston" when it comes to publishing.

She is the End is the first book in the Vada Chronicles. You can go check out the Inkshares project page for the serious pitch... as for this group? Well.

It's a space opera set entirely on Earth (at least, book 1). It's a book about aliens and all the characters are human... or ARE THEY? Spoiler alert, no. They are not. It's a hero's journey where the entire point is that there's no ONE hero. It's teamwork! It's angst! No one's completely right and most of them are horribly wrong half the time! The main meet-cute is a near-strangulation!

One of the characters is Aware of the Reader. That's right. They know you're there. Just one of them, though...

Man, I love my book. I just really love my characters and all the crap they go through together. I hope someone, somewhere, someday, reads it and actually gets what I'm going for. But if they don't, THAT'S OKAY.

Danny Westendorff | 2 comments Hello, ladies and gentlemen,

My name is Danny Westendorff, and I love fantasy in all of its forms, be it in literature, television, or even in video games.

I like to think that my writing takes cues from all of my different interests, taking tropes from classic RPGs and my favorite novels.

My pet project novel that I submitted to Inkshares is called Signs in Steel (inkshares.com/projects/signs-in-steel...) and it's about a group of mistfits and their quest to stop the reawakening of a god-beast from a forgotten age. The focal character is an apprentice stonemason named Whymer Scona.

The journey in Signs in Steel pits Whymer against monsters, bandits, and a stranger with powers unseen in centuries (just to name a few).

Dave | 28 comments Hi Folks!

I'm Dave, and I live in Maine where I teach Accounting. Back in 06 I heard an interview on NPR about this guy and his crazy idea National Novel Writing Month.

"Huh," I thought. "I bet that would be fun." So I signed up for a reminder email and promptly forgot about it.

6 months later I get an email from "Your Imagination." I started thinking about a story I could write, and cracked my knuckles before sprinting on November 1. 12,000 words in I realized I had completely run out of plot, but charged forward anyway, just making it up as I went.

Anyway, after 8 NaNos, some of which were crap, some of which were actually pretty decent, I'm finally diving in with my 2010, It's All Fun and Games. I've been polishing it for a while, and had been searching for an agent, hoping to go the Publisher route. I've never had a creative writing class in my life, and I know I need an editor. Anyway, trying to grab an agent's attention is just this side of impossible, so when a friend pointed out the Nerdist contest I figured this was my best shot at getting it done.

So here I am! I've discovered that being a writer is the easy part. Being a salesman absolutely sucks.

So here's my project. https://www.inkshares.com/projects/it...

Enjoy!

J.-F. Dubeau (jfdubeau) | 99 comments I use NaNoWriMo as a sort of storytelling sketch pad. It's where I vomit out the early first draft of my ideas that I then rewrite at a more composed, leisurely pace. The end results resemble nothing from the original but it's where I lay down the foundations and structural ideas for the story and come up with the main characters and plot lines.

It really helps to have a month or two in the year that I can dedicate all my free time to writing. Stupid full time job gets in the way the rest of the year.

message 27: by E (new)

E (em166) It's where you spend the entire month of November trying to write a 50,000 word novel. It's pretty fun but really hard.

message 28: by C. (new)

C. (cbrennecke) | 170 comments Mod
It's basically an online organization where people sign up to write a crazy number of words (50k) during one month. It's held in November, but they do online "camps" during April and July as well. It's basically a more social form of writing and it helps motivate you by tracking your word count each day and charting it. You "win" if you hit the goal. The prizes are usually discounts on things, such as scrivener.

A Beast Requires is a comedy with a body count, satirizing fantasy settings and the police procedural while abusing the hell out of my protagonist. It's cool. Albicon doesn't mind, or at least know any better.

At its core, A Beast Requires is about a group of constables stumbling their way through a city on the brink of civil war. A killer is on the loose, plots are unfolding, and the key to unraveling it all lies in men's fashion.

So here it is, and please enjoy!

Wamuhu Mwaura (ashthepoet) | 6 comments Hello:

My name is Wamuhu Mwaura. I'm a Kenyan American poet who has been published in several online journals and one print. And, despite having self-published a collection of predominately speculative fiction poetry, I found myself hesitant to do so with the novel that I've been penning for over a decade. Because, let's face it... self-publishing is often a hard and disappointing road. Additionally, the collection I self-published was drawn from a number of poems that I'd made readily available in their older forms on Blogger (Words Much Like Poetry), and because of it, didn't feel hard pressed to publish the work in traditional manner. My novel on the other hand is a different animal entirely.

While an excerpt, drawn from an earlier version of my manuscript, was published in a magazine called "Lune Wing" as Otherworld Case No. 2249 (In Legends: Realm of the Elementals), all else of it has been kind of like a closely guarded secret. That is not to say that I have not had friends and family members read bits and pieces of it over the years, but they aren't the broader audience. They can't properly gauge its readability. Its marketability. And this is a body of work that I would want well marketed.

Like many other sci-fi / fantasy writers, I have my influences, stellar voices that have helped to mold and shape my writing. I never thought to borrow their troubles. By which I mean to say, that I've undertaken mythopoeia in the style of the greats -- Tolkien and the like. In the last four years, what began as nothing more than a romance set against the backdrop of a fictional world became something far more grand, far more sweeping. It became a coming of age story interspersed with dark, invented folklore that was drawn from uncommon sources and a subversive kind of social commentary.

Where the Nerdist contest is concerned, I would like to win, but even if I don't, what reader interest I can garner will push me further along in my goal of publication. So, this is an honest appeal from one writer to others to support (recommend) my work. Yes... there are women characters to be found in high fantasy works. Yes, a much greater number of Black / ethnic female authors are penning high fantasy works (whose main characters are Black or ethnic), but works regarded as mythopoeia... Well, I'm sure you can guess at the statistics.

Book campaign link: The Northern Divide

Synopsis:

"The Northern Divide" is set in a world known as the Elemental Realm and centers around a group of diverse characters (nine in total) that are descended of the elder gods of my invented divine set, of elemental and primordial beings (e.g. Elves, Sylphs, Harpies, stone made men who I term the 'Colossals') and those who were conferred magic by the Dragons who once dwelt in the realm.

My characters, despite their individual ancestries are, in my opinion, very human and suffer because of their humanity. The plot of this work also uses, as a foundation for conflict, that age old question of "did God invent Man, or did Man invent God?" Plainly, in my invented realms, the lesser gods of my divine set must have believers in order to continue to exist. So, they play at the sport of fealty in order to secure their immortality. Of course, that doesn't mean that the elder gods are happy to sit back and watch a game that is highly detrimental to the stability of the worlds their supernal get end up using as arenas, and Destiny is usually the one who ends up throwing a cog into the works.

Come, journey with the "Anodecum" across the three Divides, but bear in mind... Destiny, as some call Fate, rarely walks her chosen upon a straight path.

« Gods, but they will suffer for their portion, bleed for their claim. Though, none more than the Ǣilfr Ǣlaÿn,. »

---

Cheers.

"In a society where mass-hypnotism maintains infrastructure, a man worshiped as a god is attacked while away from home. Saint Dastou, his friends, and a witness investigate and are led towards ambushes, deceptions, oddities, and a powerful new enemy."

The book is a sci-fi action-adventure with what I hope is a good sense of humor and the occasional hint of self-awareness.

Aitor Ibarra | 23 comments Wamuhu,

There's so much in what you wrote above that deserves a response... I've already supported the Northern Divide. I hope you do get it published, although it must be difficult to decide when it is "done" when you have been working on it for so long and you have created an entire world with its own mythology.

What you said below though, reminds me of two things - an old game called Populous (perhaps the original "god-game" where your strength and powers are defined by how many believers you have)... and maybe could be an allegory for our behaviour on Inkshares (I run away quickly to avoid massed writers with pitchforks)

the lesser gods of my divine set must have believers in order to continue to exist. So, they play at the sport of fealty in order to secure their immortality.

It has been difficult deciding whether or not this story that has lived, for what seems like forever, in my head is finished. But, in recent months, I came to the realization that the worlds -- the myths -- I'd created were finally whole. I could no longer poke holes in my own story (haha).

Had no clue Populous existed or that it carried that thread to it's story (never have been much of a gamer -- the Lara Croft reboot certainly drew me in though).

As for our "behavior"... I'll say "oh, my" / "thank you so much for your support" and run away also.

CoRy | 28 comments I feel like I am a little late to this author soiree. Better late than...

My name is Cory Wyszynski and I have been writing since I can remember. My guests where I work usually ask me if I am a writer, either by look or the way I talk, they somehow know me more than I know myself.

I have been overwhelmed by this world of Inkshares and it takes me back to the stressful month I had with NaNoWriMo. The best part? Both situations involve the same story. I was able to knock out my 50,000 and surpass it with 52,916. It was an amazing feeling. Especially, since I came within inches to throwing out my monitor from Dad's balcony. Still cannot believe I got outside with the cumbersome paperweight in my clutches. In hindsight, probably one of the better decisions I made was to put it back.

My story is actually two stories combined in one. The present and the future. The present is about a man named John Howard who comes stumbling into my tale with no recollection of the last three days of his life. He is scared, confused, and in danger--he has upset the wrong people. The only thing he remembers is his dream. The dream takes place in 3027 and an Olympian intergalactic race is taking place. This race will determine if humanity survives or perishes, due to the looming presence of an evil no one is prepared for. The dream is thrilling and life threatening, for as John gets farther into his dream, he starts to loose his mind. Before he gets too far lost on the highways of his psyche, he has to take a U-Turn at the Next Synapse.

I am also an on and off musician and a lover of the random and absurd. As well, I host (for lack of a better word) the far from critically acclaimed podcast: RaNdoM NonSeNsE; two guys are terrible at everything they do, so why not try at running a podcast. Nothing is ever done as I improv back and forth with these two guys with only hitting the record button once. If I break...I break, and people seem to like it when I do. This delight can be found on iTunes: If you would like to put the voice to the author, check out episode 10 (All three of us get a little weird in that one).

EDIT: I should mention that I did have the dream mentioned above, during a time where I was very sick and was unable to sleep for almost three days.

Chimeras and clones walk the earth in the late twenty-second century, an earth boasting an imperialist France—whose territories include the majority of Europe and parts of the Americas—and an imperialist New China, an earth of populous underground cityscapes, perfected cybernetic and nano technology, an earth where man has seemingly bent time and space to his will, traveling across oceans and galaxies with equal ease.

Enter Nanette Leeds, commander of Tenue Sept, a special taskforce assigned the duty of capture and retrieval or extermination of rouge clones and chimeras. She is thirty-six, holds several degrees in the advanced applications of cybernetics in warfare and the practical application of nano technology in the modification of bio-mechanical hardware, and is a decorated war hero to boot.

What are the possible reasons for the existence of such a taskforce, how dangerous could these clones and chimeras be and what are the possible repercussions of the taskforce’s actions upon society?

---

Hope you'll support the idea, so that it might turn into reality if/when I successfully fund The Northern Divide.

Cheers.

Hi Mangalam,

Are you planning on posting a new or existing book to Inkshares? You can do this with books you've already self-published, as long as you have the distribution rights.

I think it's worth at least putting up your work as a draft to build some interest.

Punksthetic | 5 comments Hey there, I'm Jamie AKA Punksthetic (my artist handle).

My novel is Theo Deus and the Immortal King. It's a Fantasy/Steampunk affair about a scientist who's trying to cure an ailing king. Meanwhile, forces both good and evil plot to intercept the good scientist's deeds due to a strange element that the gods claim is dangerous for the mortals to possess.

I had been prepping my novel's first chapter for weeks into the contest when I probably should have just uploaded it rough and altered it along the way (which I didn't know you could do). Anyway, I may have lost out on a lot of promotional opportunities, but I still like being able to share my story with all of you. :)

Hope you enjoy it. Have a look at it here

Carol | 3 comments My name is Carol Magnus.

My novel is Tread Lightly Through My Dreams. An empath, Gloria Abbott, works for an agency that is kinda like "park rangers" but for the supernatural. With the help of her quirky & flirty ex-cop partner, Shane Casey, she uses her powers to help protect the normal & the paranormal from each other. But being a direct descendant of Queen Cleopatra has come with a price. Whenever women in her family fall in love, they die not long after (which has made Gloria the not-so-much love 'em but definitely leave 'em" kinda girl). Will Gloria become another Abbott statistic? Find out, next time, same Bat channel, same B-...sorry, I got caught up there.

I saw the Nerdist contest but figured, win or not, it was time to at least try to get published.
