Post your thoughts as you read. Just make sure to say which chapter you're on so that there are no spoilers.

Mia (miapea) | 359 comments Just got it from the library. Read to page 4 and am already hooked by the characters! But I did put it on pause because I got drawn into My Brilliant Friend. Kind of excited to know that Ruby will be there for me when I finish. I realized that Ruby is going to be an absorbing read, so I'm sure I'll be able to finish it before it's due!

Manon Cast | 13 comments Just got message that I can download from library! Yay!

Mia (miapea) | 359 comments On page 43 - 14% in - and very engaged. I'm going to spend more time with Ruby this weekend and I'm guessing I'll fly through it!

Manon Cast | 13 comments just finished Chapter 11. This book sucked me in from the beginning. But it is so sad and intense. I really want the world to change for these characters.

Manon Cast | 13 comments Finished. Very intense and horrifying how evil is amongst us and those who know about it have a blind eye to it. Ephram the one redeeming character trying to do the right thing to help Ruby who was brainwashed by the worst of humanity.

Mia (miapea) | 359 comments I'm now 50% through it. It is intense and painful to read, but I'm really drawn in. At this rate, I'm guessing I'll be done by the end of the weekend...

Mia (miapea) | 359 comments Page 255; 74%. Otha!!! I want to leap in and save you. :-(

Mia (miapea) | 359 comments Okay - I'm finished. It was intense, and hard to get through at times, and I'm not the sort of person who usually ends up taking breaks from "tough" subject matter! I thought it was poetically written and very moving. I liked the eventual back stories on the characters. Sadly, abuse and dehumanization engenders more abuse and dehumanization. I like the grain of hope that some people can break that cycle.

Jessica (jessicafanny) | 3 comments Just started this book today. Love Cynthia Bond's writing. It's beautifully lyrical.

I'm on Ch 2- pg24.

Jessica (jessicafanny) | 3 comments I've only read to page 106. I don't think I'll finish this week, or year, as it really is intense and heart wrenching. There are so many events that have taken place up to this point that have broken my heart. I can't help but love the main characters as Cynthia Bond has written them beautifully.

I jumped to the end and read the interview with the author. She notes that many of the stories mentioned really happened to either her students or her ancestors. That makes this book so much more powerful and challenging to read.

I think we're all responding similarly. Beautiful writing, great character development, hard as hell to stomach! People actually did - do - this to other people. Heads up: your heart will break even more as you make your way through further. :-)

Thank you for the heads up Mia. It really is hard to stomach...wish I'd read more about it before starting the book, but I generally like going into books knowing little about the plot.
