Well...sounds good. I just finished a really slow, thorough read of Steinbeck's masterpiece. I'm also finishing up the journal that accompanied the book, Working Days: The Journals of The Grapes of Wrath.

This isn't the first time I've read GOW, but it's the first time I've truly understood it, as well as what Steinbeck was trying to achieve. In many respects, it's journalism disguised as fiction. All of the events are based on events and peopled with individuals Steinbeck knew and witnessed. Written in the summer and early fall of 1938, he masterfully conveys a sense of futility and oppression that has rarely been captured in literature. I can't recommend it highly enough, or reading the two books in concert.

Sorry, all, for deserting you. I did ask a long time ago if anyone would like to take over moderating this group. Any takers now?

Basically, coming up with topics and trying to keep discussions going, Rusty. Encouraging group reads. Also, making sure that discussions are civil and not off-topic, although I haven't found that an issue with this group. I've really enjoyed my involvement with these lovely people, but have too many things to deal with to do justice to the role of moderator.

Mary Kristine | 4 comments This my favorite literary period. I would co-moderate. Any one interested in discussing how we could make this group active?
