Out of the morass of my imagination emerges the hero for our post-modern times with a twist. PI Jake Knight, a sheep dairyman and cheese-maker just back from Afghanistan. He starts with Goat-Ripper, finds his footing in Gurl-Posse and comes of age in Gut-Check Green. Then he takes a detour in Girl Gone Diego. Wine & cheese & murder. YUM!
Love the rant on agents. I've queried exactly one agent (nearly 25 years ago) and even though I got one of those encouraging rejections that made me feel like maybe I would hit the target with the next book, I also realized that I couldn't write with the goal of winning the approval of the gatekeepers; I couldn't write to other people's idea of "marketability." I agree, I love the freedom of being able to take my work straight to the readers.
The hero's journey is really a tale of transformation. Can you generate the insight to see a new direction. Muster the courage to turn away from the old and begin again. And get far enough down the new road before fear and doubt assail you. So it's back to rebirthing with books once again.
