I totally understand! There was a time genres didn't matter to me as well. I pretty much read anything I could get my hands on. But I gradually realised the books that gave me most pleasure belonged to specific genres. So I drifted more and more towards them, and eventually, they became my favourite genres :-) I occasionally do read other genres, but I mostly just switch back and forth between my favourite ones.
By the way, these days, I'm especially very much into reasonably clean and light-hearted Contemporary Romances :-)

Well said Preha :-) Books that touch our hearts give us pleasure regardless of the genre.
I just meant, after years of reading different type of books, I've come to realise certain elements in a story please me more than others. So now, I tend to stick with genres that contain more of those elements.
For example: I enjoy stories that focus less on world building and more on characters, their evolution, and their relationship with other people—family, friends, love-interest etc. I also like mystery solving, triumph of good over evil, and happy endings.
So, I would be happier reading Contemporary Romance or Cozy Mystery rather than say Dark Fantasy. Hope that makes sense :-)

Little Change is MUST :)

Crime,
Thrillers,
Contemporary...
Anything that'll give you goosebumps. :-)

So at the moment i like YA and read it like an obligation.

All the other genres that I've read are from 5 years back. When I was in the 7th grade. Back then, I was an avid book reader.

Try as I might to get into it Y.A just isnt for me.

Good point :-)
I do take risks now and then. Sometimes, they even pay off. Like Harry Potter. "Fantasy" isn't my preferred genre yet I loved the books. The story contained the same elements I enjoy in "Contemporary Romance" and "Cozy Mystery" though. Like character growth, relationship and friendship development, mystery solving, triumph of good over evil, happily ever after etc. So I'm not sure if it really counts as a change.
Also, I've been lately reading a lot of "Romantic Suspense". It's a little beyond my comfort zone as it contains graphic violence and explicit scenes. However, I just skip those parts and focus on the mystery and romance, so again, it's not much different from "Cozy Mystery", which also combines mystery and romance. I read "Cozy Mystery" when I wish to relax and unwind. "Romantic Suspense" books are less comforting and more thrilling, which suit my current need :-)
That's the extent of my risk taking though. Lol. Mostly I'm happy sticking to genres I know I will enjoy. Besides, I have limited reading time. I'm not tempted to spend it on trying out new genres when I don't even get to read all the books I want to in my favourite genres. I guess I would only change genres if I stop enjoying the genres I read now.

It's nice to meet someone who shares my love for murder mysteries :-)
So, what kind of murder mysteries do you enjoy the most? Golden-Age Mystery, Cozy Mystery, Romantic Suspense, or Crime Thriller?

Basically i just like crime thrillers and romantic suspense but I haven't read so may books of romantic suspense quite a few i have read and i think it's kind of my genre because i don't particularly like a sweet fluffy romantic genre's.

I've never read Golden-Age Mystery but am definitely intrigued after reading these comments.

Try reading Airman by Eoin Colfer , by far the best historical fiction novel I've read

Hi @laraib
I've listed down some of my favourite Golden-Age Mystery authors here:
https://www.goodreads.com/topic/show/...
You can check them out if you like. If you ever decide to try out this genre. Just thought I'd share :-)

I do like dark academia although I haven't read much of it. Donna tart's the secret history is one of my favourite books :D

I also like to practice one or two ceremonies at night from some ancient grimoires, especially an old hard copy of a Sumerian cuneiform clay tablet

Have you read Chacha Chakkan stories by Imtiaz Ali Taj? If not then I suggest you check them out. They're hilarious :-)

I have heard of these stories :D but never read them. I'll give them a try :)
I did enjoy Taj's plays Anarkali was a very well written play with hints of Shakespeare's influence and his qartaba Ka qazi is very memorable as well.

Okay great. Hope you enjoy them :-)

Hi all,
I hope you're doing well :-)
Just thought I'd update my favourite genres list. (There are only a few changes.)
—Golden-Age Mystery/Classic Murder Mystery
—Cozy Mystery
—Contemporary Romantic Suspense/Thriller
—Contemporary Romance
—Romantic Comedy
Basically, I enjoy genres which focus on the characters, their evolution, and their relationship with other people—family, friends, love-interest. If this combines with a good whodunit then so much the better. Hence my love for Cozy Mystery :-)
When I need something less engaging—in a Mystery my mind tries to solve the crime along with the sleuth—and more relaxing then I go for Contemporary Romance.
There are different types of Romance books out there. I prefer the ones that focus less on sex and more on the romance. I'm okay with the author showing physical chemistry between the hero and the heroine, but I prefer it to be shown without pages and pages of explicit scenes. I wish to feel the emotional and mental connection between the hero and the heroine. I want to see them evolving as individuals and bonding as a couple. I like to see them learning from their mistakes and finding a better way of handling life and relationship over the course of the story. I require feel-good Romance books that end in HEA :-)
Even with Classics (when I read them), I prefer character-driven stories to those which focus on complex plotting or intellectual themes.
When I need something exciting, I go for Contemporary Romantic Suspense, which is a combination of Romance, Mystery, and Suspense. It's similar to Crime Thriller, but it gives more attention to character and relationship development. It's a little beyond my comfort zone as the books can contain graphic violence and explicit scenes. But I usually skip those parts, so they don't bother me much.
If anyone can offer recommendations for the kind of books I mentioned above, I'd really appreciate it :-)
Thank you :-)
