2015 Reading Challenge [Closed] discussion

I started this book 2 summers ago with all the best intentions.

Victor Hugo's insights into the human psyche are so true. The way we treat those who have been incarcerated are very much the same today. The priests views would still be looked on with disbelief in his naivety, and some admiration of human kindness.

I admit that I have only gotten as far as the priests home and a little beyond. The book is very dense and while it is very wordy, most of what is written must be included in the story.

It is a book that I will be picking up on and off for the next few weeks so that I do make it through by the end of the challenge.j

I hope you make it through and enjoy it. My friend just finished it and said it's a great book, but it's a lot like running a marathon; pacing yourself helps. It took her quite a bit of time to get through it.

I had to read this book years ago for school and remember having such a hard time! It is interesting, but much too long in some places.

Good luck. I'm doing the same. I've been reading it for over three years now. Been doing 1% a week this year in the hopes of crossing it off right at the end. Up to 86%.

Adam I started to copy your idea. Every day I have tried to read a little bit of the book.

I also did some research on the time period of the book. It has helped with my understanding of the book.

I have been doing the same (reading a little bit at a time) some parts are easier to read than others. Hope to have it done by the end of the year :D

I'm planning on reading this next year, but I think I'll have to pace myself as well. I'm finding I'm having to do that with The Idiot as well - it's just not something I can devour.

The story is so good, but it is also so wordy. I also get lost because of the time period. The author, rightly, makes assumptions about the readers knowledge about the social customs, and I have to do more research to understand what is going on.

I am loving it.

I had a similar problem with Hunchback - it took me a few attempts to really get going (and its relatively short). It was a real slog - and I'm expecting this to be the same. Though the ending to Hunchback absolutely took my breath away. Just incredible!

Only have 8% to go. This is the last book on my list. Going to be cutting it close.

When I read this...I managed to stick through to the end just because I told myself to stick to the end. I didn't enjoy it. Maybe it was better in play form.

Biana the movie with Hugh Jackman is excellent. The extra detail and side notes are not in it.

I did it! The final book on my list completed. Now just to review the ones I haven't yet and I'm done.

Congratulations Adam. This one is tough.

I am still struggling with this book. I am half way done with 3 weeks left. Plenty of time if I can stay awake while reading it. Even highlight great quotes is not helping.
I need someone to pinch me every time I nod off.
