Hussain Ravat | 11 comments According to you which is the best dialogue in LOTR

For me I have short listed three
1 by frodo "I will take the ring though I do not know the way "
2 by gandalf "The realm of Sauron has ended for ever the ring bearer has fulfilled his quest"
3 by elessar "Out of the great sea to middle earth I have come and in this place will I abide and my heirs unto the ending of this world "

Ashlee Willis (ashleewillis) Ooh, I would have to double check before listing my favorites, but your #1, Hussain, is definitely one of them (Frodo)! Love that!

My favorite line:

Bilbo: “I feel thin, sort of stretched, like butter scraped over too much bread.”

message 4: by Rizwan (new)

Rizwan (rizwanur) Frodo: I wish the ring had never come to me. I wish none of this had happened.

Gandalf: So do all who live to see such times. But that is not for them to decide. All we have to decide is what to do with the time that is given to us.

and

Gandalf: I am a servant of the Secret Fire, wielder of the Flame of Anor. The dark fire will not avail you, Flame of Udun! Go back to the shadow. You shall not pass!

Philip Dodd (philipdodd) | 84 comments Of examples of what I consider to be the best dialogue in The Lord of the Rings, the list is long, but here are a few of them.
Treebeard, speaking to Merry and Pippin in Fangorn Forest: "Hrum now!," answered the voice;"well, I am an Ent, or that's what they call me. Yes, Ent is the word. The Ent, I am, you might say, in your manner of speaking. Fangorn is my name according to some, Treebeard others make it. Treebeard will do."
And here is Treebeard again, speaking to Merry and Pippin: "We are tree-herds, we old Ents. Few of us are left now. Sheep get like shepherd, and shepherds like sheep, it is said; but slowly, and neither have long in the world. It is quicker and closer with trees and Ents, and they walk down the ages together. For Ents are more like Elves: less interested in themselves than Men are, and better at getting inside other things. And yet again Ents are more like Men, more changeable than Elves are, and quicker at taking the colour of the outside, you might say. Or better than both: for they are steadier and keep their minds on things longer."
And, finally, here is Gandalf, speaking to Saruman:
'"I liked white better," I said.
'"White!" he sneered. "It serves as a beginning. White cloth may be dyed. The white page can be overwritten; and the white light can be broken."
'"In which case it is no longer white," said I. "And he that breaks a thing to find out what it is has left the path of wisdom."

message 7: by Adena (new)

Adena | 1 comments when gandalf gives the best speech ever: "many that live deserve death, many that die deserve life, can you give it to them?"

message 8: by Erin (new)

Erin J Kahn | 36 comments Yeah, there are too many. But one of my favorites is: "The world is indeed full of peril, and in it there are many dark places; but still there is much that is fair, and though in all lands love is now mingled with grief, it still grows, perhaps the greater." Also Gandalf's speech about what to do with the time that is given to you.

Sayali Karekar | 1 comments Not all those who wander are lost!
-Gandalf

message 10: by Arok (new)

Arok | 23 comments The whole of Bilbo's poem for the Dunadan (i.e. Strider/Aragorn) quoted by Gandalf in his letter to Frodo, is certainly one of mine:

"All that is gold does not glitter,
Not all those who wander are lost.
The old that is strong does not wither,
Deep roots are not reached by the frost.
From the ashes a fire shall be woken,
A light from the shadows shall spring.
Renewed shall be blade that was broken;
The crownless again shall be king"

This is definitely one of my favorite! lOVE IT! I have NEVER put butter on a piece of bread, toast, biscuit or anything else without thinking about this line! I think it is the quintessential Hobbity line in the entire series. It sums up their philosophy which is focused on food. Everything can be compared to dinner.

Steve Bivans (stevebivans) | 21 comments I could quote Tolkien all day, oh yeah, I have...lol. But here's one for consideration, and I think, the real climax of the book upon which the entire story shifts towards the good and away from evil:

"But no living man am I! You look upon a woman. Éowyn I am, Éomund's daughter. You stand between me and my lord and kin. Begone, if you be not deathless! For living or dark undead, I will smite you, if you touch him."

Eowyn's stand against the Witch King is a stand against Fear itself, and his death signals the beginning of the end for Sauron and his dark forces.

message 14: by Beth (new)

Beth | 23 comments from Faramir: “War must be, while we defend our lives against a destroyer who would devour all; but I do not love the bright sword for its sharpness, nor the arrow for its swiftness, nor the warrior for his glory. I love only that which they defend.”

from Treebeard: “I am not going to tell you my name, not yet at any rate.' A queer half-knowing, half-humorous look came with a green flicker into his eyes. 'For one thing it would take a long while: my name is growing all the time, and I've lived a very long, long time; so my name is like a story. Real names tell you the story of things they belong to in my language, in the Old Entish as you might say. It is a lovely language, but it takes a very long time saying anything in it, because we do not say anything in it, unless it is worth taking a long time to say, and to listen to.”

from Eowyn: "All your words are but to say: you are a woman, and your part is in the house. But when the men have died in battle and honor, then you have leave to be burned in the house, for the men will need it no more."
