The Spinster Book Club discussion

Every month we will be reading and discussing two books. These may be books written by female authors, books with great female characters, or books that touch on important feminist issues.

As October will be our first month, however, I thought it might be nice to discuss an extra, third book: Holly Bourne's Am I Normal Yet?. I have no doubt most of you will have only read this recently, but we can still discuss it, and it only seems right to pick it for our first month, seeing as it is the book that started all this.

But what should the other two books be? Leave your suggestions below, and we will run a poll before the end of the month, based on them.



(In future months, suggestion threads will open at the start of the preceding month, i.e. November's will open on October 1st.)

Dorothy Must Die by Danielle Paige? The main character is a kick butt witch, does that count as a strong enough female character? And then maybe in a following month we could read the sequels? Also The Bone Season by Samantha Shannon is brilliant with a strong female character.

The last 2 really depend on age range we have here, as they are both full of sexual sheninagins and very strong language.
Also, there could be a series we all read, month by month and work our way through the series?

Maybe a modern classic?

I'd like to suggest We Are All Completely Beside Ourselves by Karen Joy Fowler, mainly because it's my favourite book and I'd love to discuss it with people!

Asking For It by Louise O'Neill is at the top of my to-read list right now so I second that suggestion too :)

I'm not sure if it counts as a book with a "great female character" but I'd like to suggest Fangirl by Rainbow Rowell :)
