Amber Martingale | 390 comments I'm in.

2 books

Theme: Murder mysteries that take place on or around Halloween

1. Rest in Pieces (Mrs. Murphy #2)
by Rita Mae Brown and Sneaky Pie Brown
Mrs. Murphy thinks the new man in town is the cat's meow.... Maybe she should think again. Small towns don't take kindly to strangers--unless the stranger happens to be a drop-dead gorgeous and seemingly unattached male. When Blair Bainbridge comes to Crozet, Virginia, the local matchmakers lose no time in declaring him perfect for their newly divorced postmistress, Mary Minor "Harry" Haristeen." Even Harry's tiger cat, Ms. Murphy, and her Welsh Corgi, Tee Tucker, believe he smells A-okay. Could his one little imperfection be that he's a killer? Blair becomes the most likely suspect when the pieces of a dismembered corpse begin turning up around Crozet. No one knows who the dead man is, but when a grisly clue makes a spectacular appearance in the middle of the fall festivities, more than an early winter snow begins chilling the blood of Crozet's very best people. That's when Ms. Murphy, her friend Tucker, and her human companion Harry begin to sort through the clues . . . only to find themselves a whisker away from becoming the killer's next victims.
(OK. It starts around Halloween)

2. Grave Peril (The Dresden Files #3)
by Jim Butcher (Goodreads Author)

To the best of my knowledge this is the first of at least THREE Dresden Files novels set on or around Halloween including COLD DAYS, which is novel #14 of the series. Halloween happens to be Harry's birthday.

Jessica I'm in! I'm going to put one of the same books back on that I couldn't finish in September... And the Mountains Echoed, then 1984 by George Orwell, and Follow you Home by Mark Edwards.

Okay! Finally updated! Sorry y'all school this year is ridiculous. I'm kinda rethinking these AP classes. I'm on fall break now though, so I should be back for a few weeks! (Fall break, plus the few weeks after since I'll hopefully be re-charged.)

I went ahead and added myself to the sign-up, although I haven't chosen my books yet. I'll choose them later or tomorrow.

Since I have been so lazy this week, This book pool will remain open for sign-up until Sunday, October 4th. Already registered participants can begin reading books tomorrow. Everyone else, join in when you can!

Jessica No problem Sydney. We all know how that goes!

message 10: by Amber (new)

Amber Martingale | 390 comments I found out that GRAVE PERIL, the third book of the Dresden Files, is actually the 2nd of FOUR Halloween stories in the series but I'm NOT switching it to FOOL MOON. FOOL MOON is the 2nd in the series.

In Publication order for the Halloween stories in the series:
FOOL MOON (Dresden Files #2)
GRAVE PERIL (Dresden Files #3)
DEAD BEAT (Dresden Files #7) and COLD DAYS (Dresden Files #14).

Hey, just so everyone knows, I'll be mostly out of cell service and wifi for the next few days while I'm out of town. Hopefully I'll get some good reading in! (I'm bringing like 6 books :P) I should be back Wednesday evening. See y'all in a few days!

Jessica Who put Fire on the list? I'm starting to read that too. I read Graceling and I really like the premise. Hopefully Fire will be just as good!

I added Fire, Gone, and The Martian for my picks. Yeah, I read the first books of several series back in the spring, Graceling being one of them, and now I'm trying to go back and finish out the series. :)

Points finally updated! Also, I'm currently a few pages into Fire, The Looking Glass Wars, and Cress because I couldn't decide what read next. And this is NOT a recommended approach, just for the record. :P

message 32: by Jessica (new)

Jessica Sydney, I'm guilty of that too.. I read a couple pages of Fire and I was really interested... but 1984 has been on my list much longer so I'm in the second section of the first chapter which is soo bad cause I'm still 1 book behind for my goal for the year. I'm just not that into it yet!

Haha oh okay... See I have issues with the whole "this Saturday" vs. "next Saturday". Everyone in my house habitually clarifies "not this Saturday but the next" just to be sure. :P

Jessica Progress Report

Fire: pg. 75 :)

I'm really going to kick myself if I let another month go by where I don't read 1984!~

message 43: by Sydney, Head Mod | Avid Reader | Dedicated Fangirl (new)

Sydney Humphrey (bjjgirl) | 2158 comments Mod
I know how you feel - I've been doing the same thing to Legend for months... On the upside, if you don't read it this month you can always add it to the pool again next month since no one read it! Or we can buddy read it together, because I have also been putting it off and already picked it up from the library. :)

message 44: by Jessica (new)

Jessica Sydney that might be just the motivation I need!!

message 45: by Sydney, Head Mod | Avid Reader | Dedicated Fangirl (new)

Sydney Humphrey (bjjgirl) | 2158 comments Mod
Would you like to do it then? Turns out my copy is actually due back this week, but I just re-requested it so I should have another copy by the end of the week.

Just updated points. Could everyone take a look when you get a chance and make sure I didn't miss anything? If I did just let me know. :)

I always feel so bad when another month goes by and I don't read half the books I meant too :| Unfortunately, The Martian and The Isle of the Lost haven't even come in from the library yet - not that I've had the time to read them. It looks like I should be able to finish Gone though, and maybe at least start Fire.

Sydney Humphrey (bjjgirl) | 2158 comments Mod
Savannah - have you had a chance to read anything this month?

message 47: by Jessica (new)

Jessica Sydney, Yes! I will buddy read with you next month. It might take a little longer than a normal person would because I'll have an infant. But I will try really really hard! And I don't know if you had a chance to read Fire, but so far I think it's awesome!

message 48: by Sydney, Head Mod | Avid Reader | Dedicated Fangirl (new)

Sydney Humphrey (bjjgirl) | 2158 comments Mod
Yay!! I'll let you set the pace then :) And I'll set up the thread for us later so we can start reading it next week, if that's okay with you? And no, not yet - still working on Gone right now. Glad to hear that you like it though!

message 49: by Jessica (new)

Jessica Ok great! Just tell me where to go for the thread :)

message 50: by Jessica (new)

Jessica I finished Fire yesterday! I know it's not October still, but I'm glad I did and I liked it a lot.
